A short story.

A few months ago my brother decided to pick up a x-box so he went to eb near his job. Bought the system bundle. He wasnt going to buy any game as i was getting him mech assault for his birthday. Well the guy just gave him 4 games for free. They arent the best games but hell they are free.

Skip ahead to today

My brothers friend who i talked into getting x-box, i told him to wait till after E3. well today he goes to eb. Picks up the bundle for $179 and buys Wolfenstein and mech. Then he told the guy he also wanted Enter the matrix. The guy gave it to him for free. No mistake. He just gave it to him.

How come i never get deals like this. All the crap ive bought at eb over the years and nothing

I have no luck at all :-)

Odd. When I first read this I thought, what a cool idea to earn customer loyalty. Give them a game free when they spend a certain amount. Then I did the math...

The maximum they make on the Xbox is $10 (probably closer to $8 ). Games generally have a 30% margin. Each of the three games in this example sell for $49 meaning EB pays $35 for each and pocket $15 per game as profit.

Using those rough numbers EB made $40 on the sale. ($15 on each of the two purchased games + $10 on the Xbox) Then they give away one game that cost them $35. Subtract that game from the sale and you end up with a $5 profit -whoopie!

OK...if the store has some sort of quota for this I can see it working. If they do it once or twice per week it could be a good thing -though I still wonder if he just happened to hit a rogue employee.

I suspect the margins are slightly higher (on at least the games) however. As another example, buying any console (in my case the XBox again) here in the UK, I got

50% off my first full price title when bought at the same time

25% off any other title bought at the same time (so thats Buffy for ?15)

?5 off any extra controllers (I didn't bother, as my wife doesn't like the look of any of the games).

Nope, Camp's basically on the money for the US market. I'd say the average wholesale price for a console game is around $35, slightly less for the big retailers of course.

Retailers make diddly squat on the machines.

I had a bit of luck the other day at Gamestop. I started talking to the manager and he ended up giving me a beta for SW: Galaxies. Of course, now I'm going to have to upgrade my video card to play it, so it's going to cost me quite a lot in the end... Wait a minute... That's not good luck at all...

:)
