2004 NBA Championship discussion

I swear the Lakers always have that one moment..that one shot that saves their asses and swings the series momentem in their favor. Robert Horry started the trend. Derick Fisher added to it. Now Kobe does it (well ok he has done it on numerous occassions). If anyone saw the game tonight you know what I mean. Just when I was thinking the Pistons had a chance in this series. Now its over.

Ok I'm done ranting. These have been the words of a disgruntled/heartbroken Spurs fan who is sick of seeing LA hit buzzer beaters. :)

-That killed me last night,... and I can only imagine that it probably tore out the hearts of the Pistons. I wouldn't be surprised to see them get swept the rest of the way.

G.D. Lakers!

On a side note, I wouldn't have guessed this a few years ago, the Laker I dispise the least would be Shaq. There are so many unlikable ego maniacs on that team, they make Shaq almost palatable in comparison. I'll enjoy the dismantling of this team in the coming years :green: ,.... as will the rest of the league I'm sure.

I think I actually agree with you on this, and I too am surprised to say it. I still don't like his style of play at some times, he is physical far beyond the rules. But Bryant infuriates me, Karl Malone always has, and the rest of the underlings seem to be learning plenty from those two.

I HATE THE LAKERS. :D

"Karl Malone wants some Beanie Barbies!" (Did anyone ever see that old episode of Crankyankers?)

I was rooting for the Pistons in this series. I thought they had an excellent chance to win this game. I would of fouled Shaq on the inbounds play.

And the Pistons really fell apart in OT. I would of drove the lane and forced a foul on either Shaq or Kobe. I would of gone after them till they fouled out.

Luc Walton looks like he's too much of a b#&% to have that tatoo. Sad thing is, I only hate him cause of his dad.

From a unbiased point of view, Kobe sure is clutch though isn't he? Man that was a great shot.

I still think Jordan is better.

..and the Pistons may have blown the series.

Some random Laker thoughts...

- I grew up watching the Lakers for the past 20 years or so. This is by far my least favorite team (including the teams that didn't make the playoffs with Sedale Threatt leading the team in scoring with a 14 point average). They have really taken this "flip the switch, win the game" attitude to the point of absurdity. It's pretty obvious that Detroit is going all-out. It'd be nice if the Lakers returned the favor and bothered to show up for all the games. Sure they would have probably swept Detroit in 4 games like they did the Nets two years ago. But at least they wouldn't be doing a disservice to the game and the fans.

- In L.A., we have a saying. The only team that can beat the Los Angeles Lakers is the Los Angeles Lakers. Too bad the Lakers have to play them every game.

- It would be nice if Karl Malone and Gary Payton did something in the Finals to earn their championship rings. I don't think I've seen a player, let alone two, that have lost so much of their game from one year to the next. Karl Malone used to live off of his jumper. Now he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn... from the inside. At least he has an excuse-- he has a bum knee. What's the so-called Glove's excuse? I've completely lost any respect I had for him after watching him sulk, after Laker victories no less, when Phil Jackson makes him sit in the 4th quarter (usually after Payton's man has lit him up like a Christmas tree in the 3rd quarter).

- The Lakers better find a way to keep Kobe and Fisher next year. A team of Shaq, Kobe, George, Fisher, Rush, Walton, Medvedenko, and Cook is a good youthful team. No Kobe/Fisher and a declining Shaq will be the league's time for some seriously overdue payback. The Lakers need to get younger, not older.

- Kobe is definitely the most clutch player currently in the league, bar none.

- The big advantage Jordan has over Kobe is his large mitts. Notice how many times Kobe turns the ball over because he loses control of it or it gets stripped. That just didn't happen to Jordan. It only makes Kobe's clutchness more impressive to me.

- I hope I never see the day when the Lakers are on the business end of a clutch shot by Kobe.

- If Detroit is going to have any shot at winning the championship, they MUST win game 3. Laker opponents have a tendency to act like they already lost the series when the Lakers get ahead.

- Prediction: Lakers win game 3 ugly, lose game 4 with another lackluster effort, win game 5 on a last second shot by Kobe, then easily win the championship again in game 6 in L.A. Kobe wins the NBA Finals MVP. Malone, Horace Grant, and Rick Fox retire. Payton opts to play somewhere else (just as badly) next year. Fisher stays with the Lakers. Kobe is acquitted then opts out of his contract and signs with the Clippers so he can prove he is the best player in the league. I weep openly.

I still think Jordan is better.

True but who is better than Jordan? Nobody. :) Kobe has his "Jordanesque" moments but he still is nowhere near as consistant as Jordan was. I dont think Kobe will ever match the competitive nature that Jordan had. Jordan would take over the game but Kobe just takes over lil spirts here and there. It will be interesting to see how much better if any Kobe gets as he matures and gets older. Hell he is still only 24 I think. I want to see what Kobe can do on another team where he is the only superstar on it. Remember Jordan didn't start winning championships til he was in his late 20's early 30's. Of course Jordan never had a guy named Shaq on his team when he was 19 years old either. ;)

I don't normally watch basketball, but it looked so good on ABC's High-Def that I couldn't stop watching. There was a wide shot of the court focusing on the action, but I glanced at the courtside and recognized Jack Nicholson instantly! He was just a small dot on the screen, but that's how good high def is! :D

Anyway, I kept watching and it was really entertaining. I think I'll start watching more.

I still have yet to see a single HD image on my 47" Panny! You've just given me another reminder why I need to get HD soon! :?

Dude, you should wait no longer. You'll need to spend an afternoon doing the 1080i Geometry/ Converg (Mine was laughable), but it's well worth it. It's fantastic. Blacks are deep as space, details sharp and crisp (and much more of it than DVD), and in many instances the image looks real (i.e. when there is a close up of a person's face -- you see every individual strand of hair!). Don't wait. :)

I would of fouled Shaq on the inbounds play.

Hindsight being 20/20 that probably would have been the best option. Send Shaq to the line, if he hits both free throws, inbound the ball, get fouled, hit your free throws...by that time there's STILL probably a few tenths of a second left. Enough for a shot - maybe. Depends where the Lakers would inbound the ball.

That being said, it was just a spectacular shot Kobe made. It wasn't a wide open look. He's hit a lot of big baskets, and is probably the best clutch player in the league.

There's no way the Pistons can beat LA 3 times in a row, I'm hoping they can take 2 of the next 3 games. Even then I don't know that they can win in LA again.

I sure hope they find a way.

OK... I was trying to stay out of this one. But being the basketball fan that I am I have to sound off a little. Granted the Lakers have to be respected. But I believe this is the worst Laker team to reach the finals so far. Their bench doesn't measure up. Do you really think the Pistons are the least bit afraid of Medvedenko or Rush (aka lucky shot maker #2). Fisher is probably the best off the bench but he's turning gimpy. Is it me or are the Lakers starting to show signs of fatigue and are injuries catching up with them? Maybe. And adding the "superstars" to the roster is a move Portland tried a few years a go with Pippen and Steve Smith. We all know how that turned out. I doubt the results would be much different. Luke Walton had a good game, but would you put money on him playing that well again? I wouldn't...not against these Pistons. Lastly, Kobe is not as great as the media and everyone else makes him out to be. Yes he is a clutch player, unafraid to take the last shot. But look at his numbers. In game 2 I think he was 14 for 27 and 33 points. Anyone who takes 30 shots in the NBA better have 25+ points. Lets not forget he was 1 for 5 from 3point land and had 5 Turnovers. I'll give him credit, he did make the one that counted. These Lakers are playing by the seat of their pants and winning by the skin of their teeth. I think their dominance is coming to an end. This Detroit team is the best the Lakers have faced to date. Win or lose these will be the best Finals we've seen in a long time. My Pick: Pistons in 6. :wtf: Yes...on the road.

Yea that sounds about right TK421 (gawd how hard is it not to make that SW joke with your name).

Anybody else here hate Luc Walton only because of who his dad is? I can't stand his dad. For some reason, I already hate him, and I laugh at his tatoo.

...and yea the HD picture on ABC was pretty sweet. I tend to catch myself not watching the game, but just looking at the picture quality.

Well, we don't say that about the Clippers. :green:

Seriously though, there are only a handful of teams each year capable of playing championship-calibur basketball. Effort alone will not win over superior talent, skill, size, etc.

Even before Game 2, Los Angeles fans have almost universally supported Luke Walton. I like his dad. He says some crazy shit. Sometimes, it even makes sense. ;)

As far as the whole Jordan/Kobe debate, even though I am a hardcore Lakers fan, if I had to choose between the two, I'd go with Jordan. Jordan was a tireless, relentless offensive and defensive dynamo, a force of nature. So far Kobe has not been able to sustain that other than in spurts. The fact that they are mentioned in the same breath speaks volumes about Kobe. I may have to change my stance after seeing Kobe perform in the prime of his career though. :)

- I AM A BELIEVER!

I believe that Detriot can win this series! To come out and dominate the Lakers is impressive, but to dominate in that fashion after the heartbeaker they suffered just two night before, Hot Damn! I respect thier swagger now, no matter how this series goes from here, they have my respect. Awesome defense is just as entertaining as great offense, IMO. And yeah this Lakers team is not as bullet proof as past Lakers teams, but they are still rightly respected as the cream of the crop, so if Detroit wins this series it will be huge! I'm looking forward to the rest of this Finals series,... which I did not expect at this same time last week. (of course all I've seen from last night's game are endless highlights,... as my friggen power went out and took my Tivo recording of the game with it. :x )
