Guest Bryan
Madden 2005 Collector's Edition <snip> the Collector's Edition will include: playable classic versions of Madden from the 16-bit era and two from the PlayStation era, a Madden trivia challenge with over 1000 questions, "Madden Moments" spanning the past 15 seasons, and historical playoff teams from the past 15 years--each with their authentic uniforms </snip> This is PS2 only - other consoles get Madden 2005 straight up. Sounds nice!
Guest Bryan
Price looks to be $59.99 for the CE. Let's see, you could get Madden or three copies of ESPN NFL 2005.

CaptainRon
I think madden is the dominant football game, I've grown up with the series and will definitely be picking this up. Hopefully madden's commentary in the game this year reflects how senile he's getting.
Guest Bryan
I think I'll be picking this bad boy up as well. Maybe playing Madden with CaptainRon can spice up my PS2 online gaming.
Guest Bryan
I just saw the Madden CE Prima Guide on EBGames - $24.99, or at least $5 more than the competition's actual game. :wtf: are they thinking?
Guest Bryan
Damn, that IS expensive, isn't it?
Calvin
If I were a Madden fan, that CE would be an awesome deal.Too bad it is a PS2 exclusive, though. I also think the price on the game guide is a bit high...
Guest Bryan
I played two games (Madden CE) a little while ago and man, was it great! The game is pick up & play fun. I like the feel of the running game better than ESPN 2k5, but passing seems to be a little too easy in comparison. ESPN will win the beauty contest every time. One cool feature is that Coach Madden offers play selections on offense and defense. They seemed to be pretty decent suggestions given the down & distance, too. The Madden servers were working flawlessly and offer a Rushing Attack mini-game in addition to regular matchups and tournaments. The online component is identical to the NCAA 2005 game on Xbox Live. You can sign up for end of game stats to be e-mailed to your POP or SMS e-mail address along with messages and tourney invites. They have a roster update (8/4/04) available for download. The EA Messenger lets you hook up with friends in the exact same way as the Live Friends List does. I am very impressed so far. This is my first Madden game, but it lives up to the hype. JTello
-Thanks for the mini review Bryan. I'm especially grateful for the comparision to ESPN in that I'm interested in how the games compare. I was disappointed that IGN and Gamestop only skimmed the comparision, but I suspect they may have plans to do that more in depth sometime soon. the games seem like good candidates for a comparison article. -At $50 I could see renting Madden to get the flavor, but since I'm content with ESPN, Madden would have to knock my socks off to get me to purchase. I'm still looking for a nice little price break/deal on NCAA.

Camp
I just saw the Madden CE Prima Guide on EBGames - $24.99, or at least $5 more than the competition's actual game. icon_eek.gif wtf.gif are they thinking? I looked through the Collectors Edition guide & the regular guide at work. Save for the cover art and about 4 pages at the very end of the CE version they are the exact same thing. The 'regular' guide sells for $

One cool feature is that Coach Madden offers play selections on offense and defense. I had similar impressions. Running felt better in Madden, passing was much better in ESPN. In ESPN I had to pay more attention to the 3-5-7 step quarterback drop in order to have correct timing. Madden felt too forgiving. I bought ESPN & I'm trying Madden with a rental, but I think I'll skip it. (BTW: ESPN also offers a recommended play on each down)
Qui Gon kim
(BTW: ESPN also offers a recommended play on each down) Madden has this feature as well. (It's called Ask Madden)
Camp
Which years are the three included "classic" versions of Madden? I know there's a Genesis era Madden and two that appear to be from the Playstation era but I don't see where they say what years these versions are from. Ask Madden appears on offense and defense. I think that John Madden actually has input on the plays that are suggested because they are uniformly correct for your current situation. ESPN suggested plays are not appropriate from time to time (example: calling a running play on a 3rd & long situation).
Robot Monkey
ESPN offers the Coach's Pick on both offense and defense. Like you point out, however, sometimes they're questionable.
Guest Bryan
Thanks for the clarification, Jay. I couldn't remember if defensive "help" was offered.
Graeme
Which years are the three included "classic" versions of Madden? I know there's a Genesis era Madden and two that appear to be from the Playstation era but I don't see where they say what years these versions are from. They aren't specified, as they call them classic, retro and old school or something stupid. I'm gonna guess and say 95, 97 and 99.
Graeme
I got em all wrong! Downloaded some video and figured out that they are 93, 98, and 2001.
Camp
Thanks! I found it odd that they didn't come right out and advertise the years. Are the players in those games accurate? -or are they using today's players?
Guest Bryan
They use current rosters because it would be a licensing nightmare to represent long-retired players in the game.
Darius
I think you're thinking of NCAA football that doesn't give you plays on defense. Never understood why. I really like the feel of the passing game but you have to play on at least all-pro with a good set of sliders. If anyones interested I can point you towards some.
