AGH!!! My X-Box is fried!

Well,my Xbox as of yesterday was working fine. Today,it is not. I got a flashing green & red button & a message that says my Xbox needs service.

If I go & get a new Xbox - even though I can do an account recovery for Xbox Live - I would lose the preminum content & would have to pay for it again.l'd also lose the stuff on my hard drive.

It will cost $100 to send it in for repair. There is a chance I could save the stuff. I'm also thinking of cleaning the Xbox by opening it up & doing the air thing. I might do that anyway, since the warrenty is no longer valid. I'll do this later today.

I'd like to know how to do so, & if anyone has any ideas, please share them.

Thanks.

YOu might try calling customer support and seeing if you get a more sympathetic ear on the other end. I pulled out the "launch dreamcast still plays games what kind of product did i buy from you card" and i got all saorts of work done free.

as far as the premium content, to the best of my knowledge, i wasn't charged for downloading what i already had, but i could have just missed it.

If that doesn't work, well, CHris suggestion is a good one as well, yes you'll lose your preimum content and some saves, but you most likely would if you sent it to MS to be worked on as well...

Cheap ass *&%^$#*&*

The guy I talked to said he would have to have a supervisor call me back with-in 24-48 hours to see if there was anything they could do about the cost.

I told Cal to just go buy a shiny new green one this evening. We have been talking about doing surgery on the old one anyway for awhile now, so this will probably be what we go with.

Besides, we send it in, pay shipping on it and insurance, figure $25.00.

Pay ( right now ) $100.00 for the repair. That's $125.00 so far.

Then we have the pain and suffering of withdrawl for Cal...... while it takes them 2-4 weeks to determine what is wrong and fix it. Then send it back ...

I think our best option is just to buy the new one.

:tu:

he is so very lucky to have a gaming girlfriend no ? :green:

Heh ... I told the guy to make note on my account ticket that my Live subscription was up for renewal, and after the quality of customer svc I felt I was getting, I would not be renewing my Live account. He said he would note it and send it to a supervisor. I hung up with him, called the Billing Department and cancelled my Live account right away.

The woman I spoke to was like " Wow ! You really are upset over this ! "

She offered 50% off the repair, if I would keep my Live account. I agreed to keep it for 1 month at this time to see if they uphold their end of the bargain, then if I was satisfied, I would renew for longer.

I wonder what they would have offered me if I called to cancel mine AND Cal's ??

Chat, here's some troubleshooting you can do at home if you like. Shamelessly lifted from somewhere else on the web. Good luck:

------------------

Description:

When you attempt to boot, a 'you need service' message comes up, and has a LED style number on thetop left hand corner. Here is what they mean.

Disclaimer:

This information is a believed to be correct, should be as close as it gets;

Also:

Bootloader stuff you should never see, since if it fails kernel doesn't boot. (thus you see no message)

Code Who sets it - Description

0 - any - No error (duh)

1 - bootldr - Unknown exactly, something to do with checking the motherboard

2 - bootldr - Eeprom check failed

3 - bootldr - ??/not used

4 - bootldr - Ram check failed

5 - kernel - HDD not locked (retail bioses require the hd to be locked)

6 - kernel - Cannot unlock HDD

7 - kernel - HDD timeout

8 - kernel - No HDD found

9 - kernel - HDD parameters (PIO/DMA/or size {debug}, certain size minimum is required for debug)

10 - kernel - DVD timeout

11 - kernel - No DVD Founnd

12 - kernel - DVD parameters (PIO/DMA)

13 - kernel - Dashboard launch fail (due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running) and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.

14 - dashboard - Error loading dashboard (dashboard generic error)

15 - - ??/not used

16 - dashboard - Other files to do with dashboard / dashboard settings (specific dashboard error)

17 - - ??/not used

18 - - ??/not used

19 - - ??/not used

20 - kernel - The dashboard was attempted to load and failed; It was a cold boot, and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed, but it (for some reason) needed to be noted that the dvd passed the challenge/response authentication

21 - anywhere - This error says that the machine was booted to display a error, basically someone told the machine to reboot (or launch a xbe) with this flag, and the error code just means its been rebooted by the flag

And decyphering the actual purty flashing lights:

-------------

GREEN/RED Flashing:

Probably a bad chip or bad image.

SOLID GREEN/No EJECT/No AUDIO/No VIDEO:

Probably a bad solder point. Check all your points again.

It could also be a heat problem , make sure your fan is connected and don't put your xbox near heat sources. You can also try to open the top of the xbox and check if it goes better.

SOLID GREEN/No AUDIO/No VIDEO:

This is probably a problems with your audio settings. Try to boot your xbox with a standard a/v pack instead of a HD pack.

ORANGE/GREEN Flashing:

No AUDIO/VIDEO (A/V) pack.

This may also be down to a solder splash on the board or a damaged track.

ORANGE Flashing:

This may also be down to a solder splash on the board or a damaged track. May also be due overheating.

GREEN for half a sec then RED Flashing:

Bad/Corrupted or Empty Eeprom.

SOLID RED:

System overheated , hardware failure , ...

FLASHING RED:

Dead, broken or empty eeprom.

----------------------

I would suspect you just have that first one, the green/red flashing right? That's usually what you get for non-mod type problems.

I have no useful advice, to maintain my record ;), but just a note of sympathy for you that I feel your pain, Cal.

I had to bite the bullet and replace my GameCube, there was nothing left for it except to pay its cost in repairs. At least you had a difficult decision with yours. My most difficult decision is going to be whether I want to trade my broken Cube in for an X-Box or a GBA-SP :green:

And excellent job kicking that customer service rep's ass, Leslie. He deserved it.

I second that. ^

All those times I've wanted to shoot Mark in the groin or kick him in the head, I've had to unleash my fury on someone else because he wasn't on XBOX Live and a flight to whatever deserted part of Canada is out of the question.

But soon, he will have XBOX Live... ;):P

What, the nation's capital?

Wait it has a capital? How can it have a capital if its not a country ;)

Get on XBOX live, joey, so I can pummel you in the groin.

See, Mark, when you get an XBOX, we can pummel this guy together! ;)

Well, Leslie called & did her thing. She loves to speak her mind, for sure...

But I won't complain - because we are going to get it repaired for free :green:

Though if I do lose all of the saved stuff we have on there - well then that Xbox will be used strictly as a portable one - as well as some other uses :)
