JTello
Wow, that is potentially one huge discovery. There are a myriad of potential impacts that could develop from this story, it's almost mind boggling.
Thrillho
i know, but its probably a shame for that kid, since the heart is a muscle its probably going to cause some real strain.

This is precisely the thought I had this morning when I saw it in the paper. The Vast (with a capital "V") number of mutations are detrimental to the affected organism. But it does hold promise for people with other disorders like muscular distrophy.
merlot
Makes you think how amazing some of these discoveries are. Little light switches that affect our growth. Would love to see the day we have complete control of genes so disease and disorders are a thing of the past.

Little light switches that affect our growth. Discoveries like this are being made frequently too. I highly recomment the book Genome By Matt Ridley, which has an eye-opening account of several such discoveries. It's a really, really, really good book, and an easy read. Also, you can participate in these discoveries by donating your spare CPU cyces to Folding@Home, a project like Seti@Home that analyzes proteins - which are what genes create, after all. We can't hope to know how genes do their work without knowing how they build proteins and how the proteins acquire their shape (which is how proteins do their work). Andy Sheets
Another article (more detailed) dealing with the same issue: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa...umber=1&catID=

rustyjaw
Hey Cyber, We all like to joke around here now and then, but I think you went a little too far offtopic and a little too far into literally threadcrapping with that comment. A little restraint goes a long way.
AnthonyVolpe
I also read recently of a young woman in Russia who is able to see through people's bodies and into their organs.

Hmm, but she wouldn't see much -- where is the light to illuminate inside thier bodies? And still no mutation to just see through clothing... You'll have to excuse me for being dense here, but you're just kidding right, there is no girl in russia that can see peoples organs. That's actually what they claimed, but this was a couple (several?) months ago. Given the way the story disappeared, maybe it's fair to say that it's the hoax it sounds like. -j
