Robot Monkey
Why is it that by the end of the game it's always revealed that your main character is actually the God of Murder, reincarnation of the World's Greatest Hero, orphaned child of the the most powerful magic users on the plane, or Captain Kirk with amnesia? -j
Steve
Is that what happens at the end of all the RPGs I don't finish? Huh.
Mark E
I have never seen any of those happen in any game . Except the first one .
Darius
It doesn't seem like they ever have any story lines that involve someone just being pushed too far and taking action. What ever happened to the gentle farmer who picked up a sword stories.

Mark E
maybe because civil wars aren't exciting in videogame format? I'm taking it you are neither in Sid Meier's target audience nor playing Star Wars: Galaxies, eh Andy?

dogbert
At some point, one of the characters will be washed up on a beach, usually with amnesia.
Mark E
Ha, that's true, Brian. Er, now that you mention it... hasn't that happened in every single Final Fantasy game since IV? I remember it happened in IV, VI, VII (I think), and X at least. Talk about going to the well a few times .
General Zot
I think because after you are the god of murder, if you discovered next time that your character is just some schlub in the wrong place/wrong time, it would be a real letdown. It's always easier to just try and make the plot bigger than to actually make it better Some companies know how to do both (Bioware), most do not. Josh
It's a typical Eastern fantasy plot line, evidence of most RPGs' origins in Japan. Western fantasy plot lines are similarly overused, Star Wars included. Luke is the prototypical bewildered orphan, Obi-Wan is the wise seer, Darth turns out to be his dad... It never ends. Ktulu
It's a typical Eastern fantasy plot line, evidence of most RPGs' origins in Japan. I wish they still made old school RPG's where you get to make your charecters and your party rather than the same old final fantasy style. The console rpg genre is so stale because there really is no variety or originality. Sure they all have their own gimicks and things that are different but at the heart of it they are all the same game. But then again maybe its just me that feels this way :? General Zot
K- I long for a good old 4 party member dungeon crawl, like the old Ultima games or something ala Wasteland. It was great to choose your characters, modify all their stats, and see if the party could sink or swim. Nothing about the main char being a God or a chosen one or anything, just a group of adventurers getting dirty and kicking tail. The new FF styles from Japan are fine too, they are just getting way too overused IMHO.

Darius
Except you can't control and create the whole party on a MMORPG.
Sam P
In response to the original comment: I might be stretching things here, but by the same token we can also say the entire RPG genre is stale. You guide a character, you beat things up, you upgrade your stats. Become big and strong. Rinse and repeat. And throw in a spell or two here and there. But then I can stretch things even further and say that Action games are stale, because all you do is shoot things up. And that fighting games are no different. The thing is, if you think the plots are becoming stale, you gotta admit that everything else about gaming is, too. Sure, some RPGs may be rehashing the same old story. And sure, some may be rehashing the same gameplay elements. But if an RPG can combine a semi-decent plot with endearing characters, refined gameplay mechanics and offer a modicum of depth - as many past RPGs have already done, I'm not one to complain. Those used to be fun, are still fun, and will continue to be fun - at least for me.
