Chris F
http://forums.avault.com/cgi-bin/ultimateb...ic;f=3;t=005485 Granted I've never played any of Derek Smarts games, but he seems quite universally disliked by a large portion of the gaming community... Is this news good or bad?
adamsappel
Ugh. I don't know if Battlecruiser was/is a good game, but he is a real asshole.
dogbert
Derek Smart. Derek Smart. Derek Smart. That usually makes him turn up.... He's a very love him or loathe him personality, which is stamped all over his games - he knows what he likes, he makes what he likes, and if you like the same thing, then the BattleCruiser series & its ilk are for you. I honestly don't think he could do a Freespace 3 that fits the series - it's definitely different to his. I'm sure it's on the auction block, just like Fallout - an interesting tidbit that got lost in the news of FO being sold was that Interplay have used the money to pay their AD&D royalty debt to Atari so they can start reprinting the likes of Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance... foogledricks
Can I just say that I LOVED the Freespace games. I loved them so much, that I bought Rogue Squadron, and was incredibly dissappointed at how shallow and arcadey it was. I wish a freespace game was made for Xbox. The closest thing to it was Crimson Skies, which of course was a different flavor and much less deep. As a sidenote, I was very much into the Descent series. Of course, that was when I was all about FPS games on the PC. It was my favorite FPS until Half-Life.
iainl
I never really put the hours in on Freespace 2 I meant to, but I have to say that the reason I bought it was because it was less po-faced than Battlecruiser. I want to bomb around in my little spaceship shooting things, and not worry about all the technical details. Smart achieved a very impressive feat with his games, but I don't play them any more than I do 'proper' flight sims rather than Crimson Skies. Mark E
A "friend" of mine decided to make a loan of Freespace 2 that I gave him a permanent thing, bastard, so I never got to really finish the game. I liked it a lot though, and the neat thing about those titles is that they really leant themselves to a co-op campaign through the main game, since you were essaying a squadron of fighter pilots. Very nice, I was enjoying the combat a bit more than Wing Commander, so it's really a shame that the series never took off. Where have all the good series gone? Cyberwoo
I loved the Freespace games. I really hope they make a good Freespace 3 game. Also does anyone know if there is a Decent 4 in the works? I have always loved those games and Decent 3 was great.
Camp
I'm a huge Freespace fan too (though I never heard the name Derek Smart). Everyone always talks about the excellence of the good Tie Fighter games but Freespace did them all one better, IMO. It really gave you a feeling of scale as the capitol ships were friggin huge. The Descent series was fun too. Not the most original in terms of gameplay but the dizzying capabilities of the vehicle made it fun. I'd love to see Descent come to Xbox. adamsappel
Derek Smart had previously nothing to do with Freespace, besides recently purchasing the license. He's the designer of BattleCruiser 3000 A.D., a PC game with a long and difficult history. He's also a bit of a dick. Like Brian said, just typing his name on the Internet usually brings him out of the woodwork, often in a profane and blustery way. This makes for a fun read. foogledricks
I just found Freespace 2 at the good old games site. It was $5.99. There is apparently an open source project to improve the game and you can install that for free. Very excited to play with 360 controller. foogledricks
I finally got around to playing Freespace 2. Since the maximum resolution was 1024x768, it was really hard to read text and so forth. I installed the opensource update to Freespace that enhances the graphics among other things, and lets you pick whatever resolution you like. So now I'm at 1280x1024, the native resolution of my monitor. Anyway, I still LOVE locking on with missiles and dogfighting in this game. So fun. The gameplay and even graphics hold up well. I mean, most of the game takes place in black space with ships you're firing at being a few football fields away from you, so the experience isn't tarnished by its age very much at all. And the enhancements help out in that department anyway. For $5.99, it was worth picking this up again at gog.com.
