Whooter
Hey gang, let's try keep the Doom III Impressions thread for review-type posts and use this thread for discussing the actual game events. Spoiler tags should not be necessary. I'm just now getting to the Alpha Labs section, and have had quite a few "Jesus Fucking Christ!!!" moments. Notably, when the Imp jumps out through the stairway at you, and when you look in the mirror in the bathroom after the "event". Both times I nearly jumped out of my chair and scared the hell out of my poor dog. :tu: Been to http://www.martianbuddy.com yet?
kelley
hell i've had several jumping moments. I'm just getting ready to enter Alpha Labs
The Daisy
Joel, I definately jumped when the mirror sequence happened. Also, I thought Martianbuddy.com was just brilliant. I'm reading through the PDA's and thought, how could they forget the code? Too funny. Glen
kelley
Well I've been to hell and back now, and let me say it was good! Just beat the game, very very very fun from start to end. I'm going to play it again ASAP and pick the other telecommunication option and see what happens.
Solitice
Well here are some more Screen shots to look at The big guys with the two rocket arms...AWESOME!! I'm going to have to play through that again so I can take some shots of those guys. Love the chain saw, its quite a bit more powerful in D3, but not very effective against the pink demons which is a bit wierd seeing that they did so well against them in DOOM and DOOMII. The big floating heads freak the shit out of me everytime.
Dimness
I hate Cherubs.....they keep me up at night.
GrumpyElf
Well, to Hell and back... I'm back in Delta labs, with a new shiny Soul Cube! I'll dig back in tonight, can't wait. And yes, those bastard cherubs sure got faster down in Hell. I thought it was dark above the ground, man, it was pitch black (no Vin reference) down there, and no flashlight... I loved it. Great game...
Cyberwoo
Well just when I was ready to start bashing Doom3 due to its repetitive first few hours the game is starting to get better. I am through Alpha Lab sector 4 and am now at the plasma manufacturing facility. Encountered some of those big flying head thingies. Oh and the plasma rifle kicks ass. Not too big on the chaingun though. Takes too long to wind up. Anyway I'm looking forward to playing some more soon.
Dimness
Here's a good discussion question: what's your favorite or least favorite Doome monster? I hate Cherubs cause they scare me. I love fighting Imps because it's just that plain fun.
Whooter
Spiders, man! Those GODDAMNED spiders! Okay, so I'm still not very far in the game (taking my time), but so far I hate them....hate them hate them hate them... :bang:
Romier S
what's your favorite or least favorite Doome monster? I absolutely love the new Pinky Demon. The animation, design and sheer intimidation of that friggin thing is amazing. I only wish there were more of them in the game (currently in the third Delta Lab). My least favorite creature would have to be the Revenant. A little to "techy" for me and the rocket attacks are just so utterly cheap. Could do without them in the game as they really feel out of place IMHO.
kelley
The hellknight is sweet, as is the new pinky, but my favorite has got to be the new Cocademons. Best demon entro though is definetely the Lost Souls intro, that was pretty sweet.

I think it has plenty of company in that regard. :lmfao: I can see Doom Guy walking around and sees a few flying heads. "That's it. No more drugs for me." :green: Seriously, just use the plasma rifle, and you should bat those rockets out of the way easily.

Sorry, what is this? Are you implying that you can counter rockets with the plasma rifle? Is this true? I'm nowhere near getting a plasma rifle or rocket launcher yet, but that would be a pretty interesting gameplay switch for me.
Dimness
Your plasma bolts can shoot plasma balls and rockets down. Strangely enough, they're not powerful enough to knock down the Hell Knight's blasts.
Romier S
Seriously, just use the plasma rifle, and you should bat those rockets out of the way easily. Its not as though I don't know how to kill them. Trust me I've killed plenty. Doesn't make them any less cheap. As far as the out of place comment I think its fairly obvious I meant in terms of enemy design and not thier place in the story. They are quite cheesy looking and not at all frightening or fear-inducing. As soon as I hear them coming I half chuckle cause they look so damn silly. They are the only creature in the game that inspire that feeling from me. Hopefully that clarified my standpoint.
Angry the Clown
Yeah so Alpha 4, that bit on the bridge with the zombia soldiers at the North end with a dozen or so of those bloody spider things chasing you from behind.......ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm with you all the way, Joel. I loathe the little buggers! [which only makes me want to kill them more! ] Been to http://www.martianbuddy.com yet? http://www.ua-corp.com also comes up in a PDA E-mail too. I love the website ideas. GrumpyElf
Worst - Spiders, for sure. "tink, tink, tink"... Oh shit, here they come... I was on one level, don't remember where, and there was a small crack in the wall, out they came... man, that was not cool. 2nd, the Cherubs in Hell, they are faster and more lethal. Favorite - I like a couple a lot. I love the Hell Knights, and the Cacodemons... Pinky, oh yea, for sure, I love hearing them lumber before they show up. Oh, the Guardian, in Hell, is outstanding... lets just say I love this game. Martian Buddy, very cool. the code will get you the BFG, which came in handy at the teleporter to Hell... you'll see what I mean if you haven't gotten there yet. Very cool game indeed... Mutombo
Here are some screenies that I have taken. I'm not very far into the game (just arrived today from Amazon!!) I'm running it at 1600x1200 on High settings with everything turned on. Haven't fiddled with antialiasing yet, but will a little later and see how it affects performance. http://members.dslextreme.com/users/justint/Doom3/ I will be updating my screenshots onto this page, so you can check back frequently for updates! Dimness
What exactly does antialiasing mean? I have a medium setup right now, but I'm looking foward to updating my card.
Mutombo
What exactly does antialiasing mean? Its a function that smoothes out jagged lines, at the cost of some performance/fps.
GrumpyElf
Just wanted to add, the Soul Cube, amazing weapon. It saved my life many times on my way back from Hell. You'll know it's time to use it when you can... as, it "informs" you it's ready. Great new weapon. Almost done, and dreading it being over... about as much as I dread actually playing it... how's that for a Catch-22! Great game. T. PS - One of my favorite screenshots I was able to get so far... very cool, until he started charging toward me. http://www.wideopenwest.com/~cmu93/doom/D3_hell.jpg PSS - Just finished it. Excellent final few levels, amazing boss at the end... although simple to beat... all in all, excellent gaming expierence.
Angry the Clown
Well I am progressing nicely. I had a bit of a down period were I felt things were getting very tedious. The gimmicks in making you jump got a little repetative to the extent where I'd know where a zombie or imp would be hiding, and those skeletons with the rocket launchers really get on my nerves. Still, things have picked up again now. I've had my first encounter with the cherubs who are incredibly creepy. It's like they flew out of Silent Hill. I loved the way they slowly came into the level too. At first you hear their unsettling cries, and instantly you know it's a sound you've not heard before, so something new is lurking and soon enough, there they are! Your post sums up my thoughts exactlly. After not playing the game for almost a week I played for 3 hours straight last night and made lots of progress. When I first got the chainsaw I had a big smile on my face. Brought back lots of memories. Anyway things seem to be picking up quite a bit. Monsters are coming at me in greater #'s and in general they seem a bit tougher. The cherubs are pretty dang cool. Also the sound in this game continues to blow me away. Everything is spot on. I've come to really appriciate the subtle ambient music clips here and there as they really create quite a mood. After playing last night my appriciation for this game jumped quite a bit. The graphics, the sound, the level design, the weapons, the enemies, etc. Game really draws me in. Sure the gameplay is more of the same old thing but this is definately the best pure action FPS game I've ever played. Looking forward to getting some more playtime in soon.
