As November 9 will no doubt be the biggest day in gaming history

Why is it people keep insisting this? Despite what fanboys on the internet believe, Halo is far from the biggest game out there, with the PS2 having two big releases this Christmas that are likely to sell far more than Halo 2, just without as much fanfare.

Halo 2 is the biggest Xbox game coming out - but there are release days that will remain bigger bigger. Such as:

  • Most of the Legend of Zelda games
  • Nintendo 64 & Super Mario 64
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • even the release of the Sega's Dreamcast

Halo 2 may have the hype - but the PS2ers (& fanboys) will be all over GTA:San Andreas. That will be the biggest title this season. GT4 will also sell big,but might lose a few people to Forza for the Xbox.

I'll say this though - Halo 2 will be by far the most popular title played here at LCVG this Christmas :)

Back on topic - I think we will break the current record before years' end.

I respectfully disagree. (I also don't care to be lumped in with the fanboys.)

This game's launch will be covered by mainstream media like a major movie release.

The closest correlation I can draw is with the release of Super Mario 3 on the NES. That was a pivotal moment in gaming in terms of it being a "phenomenon". Halo 2 will supercede SMB3 by virture of the maturity of the gaming industry. It's a bigger market that carries respect of the mainstream media and a larger share of the general public.

There was an email sent to GameStop stores that said as a company they have close to 480,000 pre-orders for Halo2. Quite insane...

Yea, Halo 2 is the biggest pre-order success ever. Comparisons to GTA: San Andreas aren't even funny. Retailers are actually surprisingly cautious about San Andreas. The shadow of Halo 2 is one reason, Rockstar's tight lipped policy is another, but the big reason is the fact that it isn't bringing in the pre-order numbers as expected. It'll be a major success, don't get me wrong, but do not be surprised if initial retailer orders are less than one would expect from such a major release.

Not only does Halo 2 come out on the 9th, but so does Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal. For me, thinking about *both* of these highly anticipated games comeing out on the same day just makes me absolutely sick! And when I say sick I mean, "Cough, cough, I think I'm coming down with something. Better stay home today." ;)

I expect a marketing blitz to rival Mortal Monday, for sure.

Has anyone heard of retailers having definite plans to open at midnight to begin selling Halo 2? If so, my vacation plans might need to be altered. 8)

Carlos.

When I preordered my SE edition of Halo 2 on EB's website, they said that if I chose "In-Store pickup" that I might be able to be involved in a "midnight opening" to get the game. I haven't actually checked with my local store, but I think it would be safe to assume that most of the major game chains (and quite possibly places like Best Buy) will have a midnight sale.

November 9th has already been requested as a vacation day for me. I can forsee almost 24 hours of straight gaming if I can indeed get this thing at midnight.

Given the almost unnatural staying power of Halo on the sales charts and the huge pre-orders for Halo 2, I wouldn't be surprised if it is the best selling game of all time by the time xbox 2 launches. This assumes it delivers the expected goods for single and multiplayer games (Bungie hasn't let me down yet, on any platform.)

You have to figure every single xbox bought for Xmas this year will likely be bought just to play Halo 2, or if it is a Grandma/Grandpa buying a game for sonny, it's a no brainer for the staff to reccommend Halo 2 to go with an Xbox.

Time will tell, but I think Halo franchise might be the superstar that single handedly doubles the xbox install base from here.

Just from the number of XBoxes in the world versus PS2s, I'd question that. Apart from anything, doesn't either Myst or The Sims for PC still hold that title? On consoles, I'm reasonably sure its GTA3; something that shifted a fair few extra copies last Christmas on XBox as well.

Yep, The Sims is still the best-selling PC game of all time, last I heard.

Given that particular game's huge cross-gender (as in across gender, dammit) appeal, I don't think it will be eclipsed in the near future either. I mean, it took, what, nearly 6 or 7 years post the release of Myst to best that?

Like Myst, however, most Sims players I know of show an absolutely remarkable lack of interest in playing any other computer game whatsoever. Getting them to hand over money to enable their sims to do new things is HUGELY easier than persuading them to buy a different game, so I don't really begrudge EA doing so.

I'd hope not. It should be up to the parents to let their child have an M rated game. This of course takes the stance "sonny" is under 17.

I'm really out of the loop, I have not even played Halo 1 yet

 And I thought my not owning Halo 1 was a sin. Please don't ban Brian from LCVG, I'm sure he's innocent, I'm sure he meant to play Halo sometime and just hasn't gotten around to it yet.

;)
