LupinLives
I am thinking of either RE: Code Veronica, Silent Hill 2 or Silent Hill 3. I do not have a GC so Eternal Darkness is not an option. Any opinions on this?
blackcalx
Cue Romier with a Silent Hill answer in 3...2...1...
EnemaEms
This one is easy.....Silent Hill 2. Great story, great creepy atmosphere, great sound. Don't bother with part 3, it doesn't even compare to part 2 IMHO. If you can score a copy of Silent Hill 1, I highly recommend that one as well. Code Veronica is also a very good game, but the RE series doesn't even compare to the 1st two Silent Hill games. -Dean-
marsrunner
Silent Hill 2 is the best survival horror game ever, and in my top 5 games of all time. Silent Hill 3 isn't as good as 1 or 2, but saying don't bother with it is kind of odd to me. It isn't as good as one of the best games ever, so don't bother? It still gets an 8/10 easy from me. Silent Hill 2 gets 9.9/10...I'd take off .1 for the controls...they aren't horrible but aren't great either. But the story and the atmosphere are amazing. Code Veronica is definitely a fun game, but just not in the same league in my opinion.
EnemaEms
"Don't bother" was a bit strong. It is a good game, but it just isn't pulling me in like SH2 did/does. The monster designs in part 3 just kind of felt, well...blah. -Dean-
Romier S
um.. Silent Hill 2. The absolute pinnacle of the survival horror genre if you ask me. Was there ever a question as to what I was going to say? As far as something that has not been mentioned I highly recommend the original Fatal Frame. Creepy as hell, great atmosphere and well if it makes Buck scream like a girl there has to be something good about it. Another recently released game that I'm having a good time with is GhostHunter. Its not at all scary but it does excel in being spooky and atmospheric. The graphics are gorgeous (and progressive scan to boot), the story is really fun and suprisingly lighthearted (as in equal parts horror and comedy) and the voice acting is the best that I have EVER heard in a videogame. EnemaEms
Yes, the Fatal Frame series is very good and different. Part 2 is a lot easier than 1, but one is a bit scarier IMHO. Part 2 has some great moments though. :tu: -Dean-
Romier S
Part 2 is a lot easier than 1, but one is a bit scarier IMHO. I found the first to be far scarier Dean but to each his own. I do agree with you though that both are worthy of look. Fatal Frame 2 is due out on the Xbox this October so if you're going for that one Lupin you may want to pick up the Xbox version considering the improvements made to the first game when it was released on the box. LupinLives
Thanks! About a year and a half ago we had a Gamecube (wound up trading it in which I regret) and played a few hours of Eternal Darkness...there was something so spooky about that game..it gave me the shivers.. I will see about SH 2 and I might rent Ghosthunter after that glowing opinion above...
General Zot
If you prefer a samurai bend to it, then the Onimusha series is basically survival horror with a sword. A little more of a action type game than most survival horror, but if you dig samurias cutting up demons survival-horror style, this is it. Best bets are probably the Silent Hill games. Pretty much I found them all equally scary and hard to understand, but certainly the graphics and such improved in 2 and 3. If movies like Ring or HP Lovecraft stories do it for you, SH is your ticket. Fatal Frame games are good and probably scarier than SH, if for no other reason than you don't get any real weapons. You feel more vulnerable and if you have a penchant for ghosts over hellish abominations, FF might be the way to go. Otherwise Siren is a newcomer that seems to have a love/hate relationship with fans. Haven't played so can't comment, but check it out if you see it at the rental store. Actually that's your best bet for any of these. Rent them (all should be available at BBuster) and see which floats your boat the most. Jordan_E
I pick Fatal Frame as being a tad spookier than SH because of what Snakefish wrote about having no weapons, all you got is a freaking camera, and having to wait for them to rush you to get those extra points. But I haven't played SH2 in a LONG time (SH3 just didn't do it for me at all), so I may have to revisit it soon, after all autumn is coming. adamsappel
I haven't played my copy yet (too scaredy), but Clock Tower 3 is another title to consider.
Zathras
Brittney's Dance Beat? Just kidding - I prefered FF1 to 2 and haven't played any of the SH games but renting would probably be a good idea in any case.

Romier S
How long does it take to go through SH 2. The only way I can get it is through a purchase First time through I would say about 10-12 hours. If you rush through you could get it done in about 9 hours but I wouldnt recommend rushing. LupinLives
Okay gang, based on the advice given here I finally purchased (actually finally found) a pre-owned Xbox copy of SH2. I am psyched! SH2 will be the game that gets me to Sept 14th!!!

Are you saying that there are a lot of copies floating around in your neck of the woods, because if you are saying that, I seriously think I need to find my way to a game store sometime next week during my visit. Wouldn't you agree? Oh, and Silent Hill 2 and 3 are both great. I highly recommend them. I also recommend Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, which is easily one of the best games in the series, surpassed only by the Resident Evil remake on the GameCube. Dimness
After reading this thread, I may pick up Silent Hill 2. I purchased the first one when it was ten bucks, and I loved it although I got freaked out by it, and I was getting pissed my guy couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with his pistol.
