heavy liquid
Anyone who likes quirky Japanese games with funky soundtracks should definitely check out Katamari Damacy. Namco is releasing it in North America on 9/21/04. And it's only 20 bucks, to boot! I preordered a copy, because I'm not sure how many (if any) my local stores are going to get in. You're the Prince of the Cosmos, and it's your job to clean up after your father (the King of the Cosmos) after he smashed all the stars in the sky. How do you do this? You have to run around Earth, rolling objects into balls of junk (erasers, pens, trees.. etc) that's transformed into a star when you're finished. You can only roll small objects at first, but work your way up to much larger objects as you progress in the game. Gamespot preview: http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/puzzle/katamar...ew_6105567.html There's also a lot of cool stuff at the Japanese website: http://katamaridamacy.jp/ Trailer: http://download.namco-ch.net/katamari_movie.mpg I don't really like the trailer all that much, but it does give you a good idea of the nice art style and soundtrack. iainl
I hate you. I really want this game, but will it get a European release? Will it hell. Time to get a modchip, methinks. Except the courts have just banned them in the UK.
heavy liquid
Oof. Sorry about that, Iain... Yeah, that stinks. And I don't think Namco has a very good track record with European releases, does it? Hopefully if it sells decently in NA, someone will release it there. And I hear they're working on a sequel, as well.
dogbert
Really keen to see this. Guys I know with the import absolutely love it.
heavy liquid
I just noticed that Game Informer has their article on Katamari Damacy up. It's a good read, but it's really worth it to check out the media section. There's five downloads that represent the game much better than the trailer, and showcase how truly bizzare the game is. Also, here's the Japanese TV ad (WM file): http://www.playstation.jp/ch/cm/asx/cm_katamaridamashii.asx
Calvin
I like bizarre games. If if comes here - I'll check it out.

adamsappel
Ooh! This is one of those quirky "sure-to-never-be-released-here" games I've been longing for. Thanks.
blackcalx
One of the few times I wish I had a PS2...bummer.
General Zot
I might check this one out. At $20, it's worth a few hours just for the heck of it...
Romier S
The one game my EB didn't get unfortunately. Supposedly it will be in tommorrow and I'll be there picking it up.
Big Daddy Bling Bling
I think it's been delayed to the 21st. With Yager, Gradius, Katamari, and Castle Shikigami all coming out, it's a good time for cheap games.
Romier S
Yep is has been delayed until next week. IGN has thier review up: They gave it a 9.0 I agree also that it's a great time for cheap games. Gradius V was only 30 bucks, Guilty Gear X2 #Reload for only 19.99, Gungrave: Overdose was only 14.99 and now only 20 bucks for Katamari! :tu:
Big Daddy Bling Bling
Yeah, I was going to get Gungrave today when I picked up Gradius but Gamestop wanted $19.99 for it for some reason. I'm looking forward to "kicking their ass" when the other retailers around here get it.
AnthonyVolpe
$20 + Japanese + weird = Mine. We'll see if it can out-weird Vib Ribbon.
General Zot
That's ok, gives me a week to finish Fable (once) and play a little Battlefronts. Next week then...
AnthonyVolpe
Got my copy earlier today. Only 2 in the store. Let you know what I think of it later...
Romier S
Mine came in today but was stuck at work. I will have it tommorrow.
heavy liquid
I'm having a hard time trying to track a copy down. I called 6 EB's and 8 GameStops in my area. No luck. The EB's had sold what few copies they got in, and it doesn't seem as if any of the GameStops have gotten it in yet. Hopefully they'll get it in this afternoon so I can play it over the weekend.
AnthonyVolpe
Buy this game. Now. It is the weirdest, most insane, most bizarre, most hilarious game I've played in months. It even beats Vib Ribbon. The controls are great, the graphics are bizarre, the sense of style is phenomenal, and the dialogue is gutbusting funny. Even if I end up beating this game in a few hours, I'm keeping it for posterity. It's just that unique. This isn't a game, it's a trophy. Big ups to Namco for having the balls to bring this to the US.
heavy liquid
Originally posted by AnthonyVolpeBig ups to Namco for having the balls to bring this to the US. No doubt. And they get major points for not changing the cover or soundtrack. And the manual is in full color! I can only hope that Namco continues this trend. Where's my Mr. Driller: Drill Land? Now if I could only find the game.. I suppose for once, I should've preordered.
Romier S
Looks as though the world of "niche" shall continue and the King of all the Cosmos will return! Katamari Damacy 2 on the way! I've come to the conclusion that I will never get good a this. :lmfao: Seriously though this is terribly addictive and just about ass out there wierd as a game can get. It's on par with Vib Ribbon in that regard. really loving it so far and well I'm happy to see a sequel on the way!
iainl
Hmm, how over the top would it be for me to buy a second PS2 just to play this, I wonder?
Romier S
By the way Gamespot has a news article up about the game: Katamari disappears from store shelves "We are working closely with retailers to make sure that Katamari Damacy is readily available," Schorr continued. "However, we encourage gamers to talk to the store managers and inform them of their desire for the game. Namco has plenty of product available for all retailers that request it." Namco, then, puts the blame on retail buyers failing to recognize the sales potential of the title. One retailer's opinion is actually quite similar. A source within the executive ranks of a large retailer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that "Katamari Damacy is a quality, unique game at a very compelling price. Some retailers may not have anticipated demand." It's good to see the game is clicking at some level with audiences out there. Perhaps there is still room for the quirkly titles in this hit-driven industry. Now if Sega would hurry up and do that reissue of Rez soon, that game may also get the attention it deserves.
