Katamari Damacy

Anyone who likes quirky Japanese games with funky soundtracks should definitely check out Katamari Damacy. Namco is releasing it in North America on 9/21/04. And it's only 20 bucks, to boot! I preordered a copy, because I'm not sure how many (if any) my local stores are going to get in.

You're the Prince of the Cosmos, and it's your job to clean up after your father (the King of the Cosmos) after he smashed all the stars in the sky. How do you do this? You have to run around Earth, rolling objects into balls of junk (erasers, pens, trees.. etc) that's transformed into a star when you're finished. You can only roll small objects at first, but work your way up to much larger objects as you progress in the game.

There's also a lot of cool stuff at the Japanese website:

Trailer:

I don't really like the trailer all that much, but it does give you a good idea of the nice art style and soundtrack.

I just noticed that Game Informer has their article on Katamari Damacy up.

It's a good read, but it's really worth it to check out the media section. There's five downloads that represent the game much better than the trailer, and showcase how truly bizzare the game is. ;)

Also, here's the Japanese TV ad (WM file):

Buy this game.

Now.

It is the weirdest, most insane, most bizarre, most hilarious game I've played in months. It even beats Vib Ribbon.

The controls are great, the graphics are bizarre, the sense of style is phenomenal, and the dialogue is gutbusting funny.

Even if I end up beating this game in a few hours, I'm keeping it for posterity. It's just that unique. This isn't a game, it's a trophy.

Big ups to Namco for having the balls to bring this to the US.

No doubt. And they get major points for not changing the cover or soundtrack. And the manual is in full color! I can only hope that Namco continues this trend. Where's my Mr. Driller: Drill Land?

Now if I could only find the game.. I suppose for once, I should've preordered.

Looks as though the world of "niche" shall continue and the King of all the Cosmos will return!

Katamari Damacy 2 on the way!

I've come to the conclusion that I will never get good a this. :lmfao: Seriously though this is terribly addictive and just about ass out there wierd as a game can get. It's on par with Vib Ribbon in that regard. really loving it so far and well I'm happy to see a sequel on the way!

By the way Gamespot has a news article up about the game:

Katamari disappears from store shelves

"We are working closely with retailers to make sure that Katamari Damacy is readily available," Schorr continued. "However, we encourage gamers to talk to the store managers and inform them of their desire for the game. Namco has plenty of product available for all retailers that request it."

Namco, then, puts the blame on retail buyers failing to recognize the sales potential of the title. One retailer's opinion is actually quite similar. A source within the executive ranks of a large retailer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that "Katamari Damacy is a quality, unique game at a very compelling price. Some retailers may not have anticipated demand."

It's good to see the game is clicking at some level with audiences out there. Perhaps there is still room for the quirkly titles in this hit-driven industry. Now if Sega would hurry up and do that reissue of Rez soon, that game may also get the attention it deserves.
