So, can I start the Trek flaming now?

Whether it be about which version of the B&B-mangled timeline they'll be using, the fact you won't just be able to get out of any random full-on disaster by shouting "realign the deflector array to reverse the polarity on the wiblyon field!", or if your starship will be equipped with an infinite number of shuttlecraft...

Some new details have been released on the upcoming Star Trek MMO. First and foremost, the game is set shortly after the events of the most recent film Star Trek: Nemesis. The game will ship with mostly player vs. environment content with PVP content coming after launch. There are some very cool things mentioned including cooperative first person shooter elements for away missions. You can more here .

Players will be able to choose to play as a character from one of seven races from three major subtypes: analytical, versatile, or aggressive, including the usual suspects, like humans and vulcans. Whereas in other massively multiplayer games, you'd choose a specific profession or character class for your character, in Star Trek Online, you'll choose a departmental specialty. These include flight control, science, medical, engineering, and tactical/security. As part of Federation directives, all cadets are trained for combat, so all characters will be able to take care of themselves.

As Dahlgren explains, the idea behind starships is also to make players feel like an actual crew, rather than a bunch of random players thrown together--the designer suggests that players may essentially approach being part of a crew like being a part of an online game clan. Bridge missions, however, will be far less casual--they'll involve battles to take over enemy ships by first disabling their shields in combat, allowing a team of players to beam aboard the enemy starship with the ultimate goal of disabling that ship's warp core, crippling it. Away missions will take place on terra firms and will actually include first-person shooter content--these missions will take place in instanced areas and play much like a cooperative multiplayer shooter. Finally, the holodeck will let players basically simulate all other content, including mock player-versus-player duels and mock crew-versus-crew bridge missions.

I like the sound of things so far. I talked with a few of the people here a while ago about what I envisioned a Star Trek MMO being like and this is remarkably similiar to that. My only wish is that they eventually allow you to join other military bodies other than the Federation. I can imagine such additions being part of an expansion to further the PVP content but I would love to join the Klingon or Romulan Empire or possibly even become a Dominion Jem'Hadarr soldier. This would allow you to serve on each individual races distinctive starships including the new Romulan Warbird, the Klingon Warbird etc. How cool would it be to play a Ferengi merchant with your very own Ferengi Marauder? :rock That would be pretty damn cool if you ask me.

Well the game has gone through a bunch since the last time. Development moved to another "west coast studio". Well now we can pretty much guess who it is. Cryptic makers of COH/COV, and the upcoming Champions Online has put a countdown clock which ends the last day of Comic con on their site. The background artwork for it, is one of the early Trek Concept arts that we saw a while back. Good to see Cryptic is now developing it.

They've been dropping major hints about them doing it for a while, since around GDC.
