Graeme
According to Gamespot, Gran Tourismo 4 is set for release in Japan on Dec 3, and NA and Europe on the 14th. The big dissapointment however is that GT4 is no longer online!! Instead another GT game will be released in '05 with online functionality. http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/24/news_6108402.html

secretvampire
Yep...three cheers for the mega-corporation that can't seem to accomplish what their budget competitors are doing every day. Nice.
Romier S
Why does it feel as though the next Gran Turismo game in 2005 that WILL have online functionality will be for the PSP and not the PS2? It could just be me being paranoid but its the feeling I'm getting after reading that.

Maybe they finally hit the realization that they are going to have to have a truly killer app to move those (allegedly) $300 pieces of hardware and decided to hold back on the GT4 online stuff for this purpose. Camp
Online or not, GT4 is going to be impressive. I had the opportunity to play GT4 recently (and compare it to a playable version of Forza). Despite the fact I know it's using all sorts of tricks to achieve it's visuals, GT4 is easily the best looking game I have seen on any console. It's going to be a monster of a title for Sony this year. Forza, on the other hand, was just kind of blah. It seemed to drive OK but it just doesn't look good at all. After experiencing the graphical wonder that is GT4, Forza is just so average. I also didn't like the way Forza penalizes you for driving outside the track pavement. One foot into the gravel and your vehicle takes a sudden and unnatural hit in speed. For a game so rooted in "reality" it's an odd design choice to put artificial barriers in the game. I know Forza has been moved to Q1 2005 but I hope they push it back further and re-work the graphic engine.
Darius
This is dissapointing to say the least. I'll still buy it. I just hope it doesn't turn into the same kind of thing that sega gt had. Where it was an ok game but the online play was horrid when it finally came out. Hopefully they'll use the extra time to up the number of cars you can have in a race.

A PSP exclusive of this nature will sell hardware.
Romier S
That was my thinking exactly Ed but it is a loss for PS2 owners not to have GT4 online. I don't think this will negatively impact sales of the game to a large extent (though I'm sure some will disagree with me on that) and I'm curious to see how this next online game pans out. Sam P
No worries from me. I already have a wheel to buy and I no longer need to get my PS2 online. Nurburgring and Gran Turismo physics is enough to sell me the game. I kept thinking it was going to be November. When did December happen? Darius
It was supposed to be november but it got pushed back. I'm just glad it didn't get pushed back to next year.
Graeme
I like GT quite a bit, but to be honest this is pretty much a deal breaker for me. I'll probably still get it, but my enthusiasm for the game is all but gone, and the chances of me picking it up right away are nil.
iainl
I don't have the broadband adaptor, so I won't even notice the difference. I'd considered getting one for this, just so I can play in the fastest lap tables, but then I'm too rubbish to ever reach anywhere in any case. All I ask is that GT4 is substantially less soulless in its AI than 3.
Ricky G
All I ask is that GT4 is substantially less soulless in its AI than 3. Yeah, that and I hope I dont have to race the same races OVER AND OVER AND OVER to advance. That just killed the last game for me, I tired of the game way too fast, somewhere around 30% due to the early tedium.
Buck
Despite the fact I know it's using all sorts of tricks to achieve it's visuals, GT4 is easily the best looking game I have seen on any console Wow. They must have done a lot of work since the Toyota demo was released as IMO that looked absolutely awful. All I ask is that GT4 is substantially less soulless in its AI than 3 This was the biggest reason for me to play GT4 online and why I would have bought it on day one. While the physics have always been great in the GT games, the AI has always disappointed me. They never react realistically, always taking the same line, never aggressive to fight for the position, and hardly ever a challenge late in the game. I'm sure I'll pick up GT4, but it won't be at launch.
