Romier S
We always talk about the best and worst games available for these consoles of ours but Ithought I would change it up a little and talk about something else a little more direct and visual. To be more to the point lets talk about the best and worst game covers to have appeared on the Playstation 2. In the light of the money we spend for these games we play the cover is truly inconsequential. The game inside that newly bought case is what is important but having a great cover can really catch a passerby's eye or even increase interest in a title you may have no had any interest in to being with. I consider myself to be a very visual person and enjoy a good piece of game art when it presents itself. So without further ado, here are a few of favorite covers that have appeared on the PS2 (in no particular order): Zone of the Enders 2: The Second Runner I love the mystery the cover to ZOE 2 conveys. For those that played the first game you can note familiarity but for those just taking a look at the series for the first time the anime style and great artwork was enough to catch my eye. Disgeae Hour off Darkness I bought this game on the cover alone. I love the mish mash of images. They serve to bring a resounding level of movement to a complete still image. I love the art style and the use off color. Castlevania: Lament of Innocence Possibly my favorite PS2 cover art. What can I say, except that I am utterly bias in this case. I *LOVE* Michiru Yamanes' work and this is one of my favorites. I hope to see her continue her legacy in future Castlevanias to come. Now for a few of the worst (and I think they can go without explaining why.) Haven: Call of the King Pryzm: The Dark Unicorn Fallout Brotherhood of Steel I'm looking forward to seeing some of your choices. I'll more than likely be doing one of these for each platform so look out for them in the other areas of the forum as well.
Ryan FB
In the "worst" category I nominate: Mobile Light Force 2 the coverart has absolutely nothing to do with the game in question just looks bad overall they just lazily reused the Mobile Light Force PS1 cover! Sad to think how many people avoided a fun little bargain (I think it started at $9.99) vertical shooter because of this utterly crap cover. :? Gungrave: US Cover vs. Japanese Cover...you decide. Big Daddy Bling Bling
My favorite cover has been the U.S. Gungrave cover for quite a while. I love the contrast in the colors, and in fact, the cover is what induced me to buy the game after it hit cheap prices. I also like Xenosaga's cover a lot, it's a shame that the cover is better than the game. Worst art, from what I own, is either R-type Final or Ninja Assault, but I'm sure there's some crappy art out there that I don't have the privelage of owning as well. AnthonyVolpe
Best Cover Art: Katamari Damacy - Just plain SICK!!!!!! Silent Hill 3 - That photo of Heather speaks volumes Fatal Frame II - the cover of this game alone scares the hell out of me Worst Cover Art: Freestyle Metal X - Just from looking at that cover I wanted to avoid that game BMX XXX - I could reroduce that cover in less than 3 minutes even without the font Super Bust a-Move - as brilliant as the game itself is, the stupid-looking photograph of the baby on the cover was enough of a turnoff that I didn't find out how good the game was until years later when I tried it on a PC
adamsappel
The US cover for Ico is horrible.
stillfastasleep
Best cover heart for me, Kingdom Hearts. When you think about what the game is like, a very colorful, cartoony rpg featuring a cast of Disney characters, the idea of a cover featuring blue monochromatic figures placed in front of a white moon like heart is quite striking both in its simplicity and elegance. secretvampire
Romier definitely hit on a few of my favorites, ESPECIALLY Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner, amazing artwork. I thought that Contra: Shattered Soldier was kinda cool....I like the gritty, yet artsy style: Contra: Shattered Soldier This one is probably just me, but I've always hated Legaia 2: Duel Saga's artwork...the color scheme is lousy, the character's poses look cheesy, and that cheap looking lens flare effect thing in the background tops it off: Legaia 2: Duel Saga It is also interesting to note how quality can vary so much even within a single series...compare MotoGP 2 which is AWESOME: MogoGP 2 ...to MotoGP 3 which is horrible, IMHO. I am Gigantor Breasts and I have come to crush all MotoGP riders: MotoGP
Romier S
Contra is definitely a winner. One of my favorites as I like the style of art. The Legaia cover is vomit inducing. Jsut a terrible clash of color!
