MrJames
With October nearly upon us I start looking at the release calendar for each console. Checking through the PS2 section I was aware of Ace Combat 5 coming out late in the month but it surprised me to see the game being offered with a throttle/flight stick. While its not quite Steel Battalion it still looks damn cool. Even at $130 I'm seriously considering getting this. Anyone else? Jeff W
Looks cool and while I'd love to pick it up, one expensive and rarely used controller is enough for me.
Ricky G
Bloody f#@!ing cool! I'm getting it, and will sell whatever i need to get it!
Ricky G
BTB, Just pre-ordered with EBGames.com. Saved $13.00 by having a GameSpot membership, but this peripheral is just TOO cool to pass up. Oct 25th --- EDIT: Thanks for the heads up, MrJ! Romier S
Sweet! Didn't even know about this flight stick. Definitely picking it up. Thanks for the info James.
Big Daddy Bling Bling
I'm thinking about it, but AC5 is going to release around the time of the Buy 2 Get 1 Free Toys R Us sale, effectively making alternative cost of the game $33. It's hard to justify more than $100 extra after tax for a flightstick, patches, and a DVD. I'd be down with it if the stick had force feedback, but I don't think it does. MrJames
Based off of this article it looks like it will support dual shock vibration but not actual force feedback. It's a $130 bundle so you won't be getting the HOTAS Cougar.
Orpheus
This is SOOOO tempting. I've shied away from the more realistic console flight games because of lack of stick/throttle combo. Definately want it, just need to make sure I'm set for the November and December onslaught of games. Big Daddy, is that confirmed for the TrU sale? kelley
BTW - the stick is just a rebadged Saitek X45, which I use on the PC and its a very nice $70 HOTAS.
Derrik Draven
Never played any of this series. Is it arcadey or realistic? Do you get to land and takeoff on your own?
MrJames
Its kind of a blend between the two leaning more towards arcadey. Its been a while since I've played AC4 so I may be confusing some things with Air Force Delta. There were no take offs to start the mission but I do remember being able to land on airstrips/carriers to reload and refuel during a mission. Landing after the campaign was optional IIRC. The AC5 bundled controller may work with AC4 since there was a limited edition bundle with a flight stick released in Japan for AC4. A nice bonus if it turns out to be true. Big Daddy Bling Bling
There is a demo of this that was released with a magazine(don't remember which one). The demo is decent, but prepare for a big fat helping of more of the same. That's fine by me since AC4 is one of my top 5 PS2 games. I don't think I'll get bundle though, it just seems too expensive for what you get.
Ricky G
but prepare for a big fat helping of more of the same It still feels that way even with the new wingman commands?

I didn't really mess around with the commands much, but from what I played it didn't seem like they'll make a huge difference. The responsibility is still pretty much with the player to get the job done.
MrJames
Stood in a line for almost 30 minutes waiting to pick this up at EB (only one guy working today, WTF). They just HAD to release this the same day as GTA:SA. The box is bigger then I expected. It will be interesting to see how big the controllers really are. Big Daddy Bling Bling
I played through the first few missions and my expectations were confirmed. It looks marginally better than AC4, has great music, and top class story presentation. It's pretty much the same game as AC4, so it earns a strong recommendation from me. Orpheus
OK, so how is game play with the stick and throttle. Is it worth the extra $80? I had this in my hands last night but couldn't quite pull the trigger on it.
Ricky G
OK, so how is game play with the stick and throttle. Excellent! The joystick/throttle is of very high quality build, moreso than my logitech force feedback PC device. It's heavy and solid. The throttle has great friction, which is adjustable. It's tightened up pretty good for shipping, but the turn of a screw will loosen it a bit. I will never play AC5 or AC4 with the dual-shock again. The difference is night and day. There are also some PC drivers on the net that will allow you to use it with PC Games. The fact that it's a limited edition guarantees solid resale on it, which doesn't make it too much of a risk, even at $80.00. Highly recommended! Ok, that sells it for me for sure, my Sidewinder is almost dead and I'd be looking for a new PC combo anyways. Any chance you have a lionk for those drivers (yes, I'm being lazy)? Never mind, found them here.
MrJames
Wipes dust off thread.... Both Walmart and CD Universe are listing Ace Combat 5.5 with a November 2005 release. I wonder if it's just a re-release of 5 with new missions and maybe an online component. If true it's pretty surprising since nothing was shown or mentioned at E3.
