Just ordered a new Powerbook

Ordered the basic 15-inch 1.33ghz powerbook from Amazon (no sales tax and they offer a $150 rebate until November). Should get it next week. Didn't get the superdrive (really can't imagine me burning too many DVDs, but who knows - I could get a FW burner down the road) or backlit keyboard (too Batman for me). But it does come with Airport Extreme and Bluetooth and a whole host of new software (the whole iLife suite, including Garageband which I'm looking forward to).

I'll keep you all posted as it comes.

Sweet dude. I've heard about that account/file transfer utility on new machines...so it works well I take it?

I've decided that I'm going to get a powerbook after MacWorld. I'm hoping they add gigabit ethernet to the 12" and optical audio out. Then I can do some distributed audio processing using Logic 7 and my G5. It not only can distribute the audio DSP load, but it synchronizes project files between the desktop and the laptop, which is killer.

Congrats on the 15". I love my 12" powerbook that I got a month ago. I just didn't want to cart around the extra size of the 15" yet. Enjoy your baby. I also opted for the non superdrive. I think I'm going to end up buying an external duel layer burner since they're getting so cheap now.

Didn't get the superdrive either. I really can't see myself needing it anytime soon; I'm far from a video producer, either amateur or pro. Don't even have a camcorder.

Yes, the file / account transfer worked flawlessly for me. In a way, it's a bit disappointing, actually, since I didn't really get to config the thing; it's exactly like the other one that I'm replacing.

Josh, what kind of options does the transfer app have? How fine-grained is it? Can you opt not to copy documents over? Or such things as fonts? Or is it more simple, like just mirror my system?

Darius, a dual layer drive is great, but in case you are going to, be warned that it won't work with iDVD (the built-in video DVD creation app). You can use one to create data DVDs, and to copy other DVDs however.

The transfer app lets you choose by folder: apps, documents, and then settings, pref, and the rest, I believe. It's been a few hours. I just said screw it and did 'em all and it worked out perfectly - haven't had to re-install a single app.

I have yet to mess around with GarageBand, but hope to do so tomorrow.

Hmm. thats not what I was hoping for. I wanted to use it with idvd. That seems odd that you couldn't use them with just any dvd burner.

Dissapointed now.

I was hoping that lacies would be different somehow.

Stencil,

I was just in the Apple store yesterday and wow, color me iEnvious too! They sure know how to make a computer at that company. Unfortunately, I am too engrained in the Windows world to switch over now...

Anyway, the whole reason I went to the Apple store was to see if they had a better selection of small notebook backpacks. I have been looking since my new 12" widescreen Dell arrived on Friday and everything at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc is designed for those huge 15-17" behemoths that everyone seems to favor these days. They had the perfect case there, and it was surprisingly only $60. Check this out --> http://www.goincase.com/prod_laptop/prod_lt_slingpk.php

It fits 12"/15" powerbooks and 12"/14" iBooks... oh, and also 12" Dells! :)

The padding is very good, the laptop really feels isolated from the outside and the whole bag with laptop and all weighs next to nothing. I also never wear two straps on a backpack, just throw it over one shoulder... well this is a "sling" pack and only has one strap, it's actually intended to cross over your body, but I just throw it over my shoulder like a 1-strap backpack and it works great.

Geez, by this post, you'd think I worked for the company... obviously, I really like this bag! :)

Anyway, congrats on the new computer!
