bgarcia
Last year, I had problems getting any type of smooth online gaming with ESPN Football. I'd been having problems with my isp (which is a wireless, T1 based service) delivering consistent bandwidth. This showed up through bandwidth meters which showed severely inconsistent results, with upload mostly suffering ie. upload readings frequently <100kbps. And ESPN Football would frequently go to the black 'waiting on opponent' screen, which really sucked. BTW, I played a couple of Madden games on PS2 around this time with no problems, and smooth gameplay, so I was really puzzled about what the problem could be. I just couldn't believe people could enjoy the type of gameplay I was seeing in ESPN live. About last May, I switched to a new provider, with the same T1-type setup. Although his bandwidth seemed more limited, bandwidth meters would consistently show dl of ~500kbps and ul of ~300kbps. I challenged my old foe to a quick game of ESPN Football and we managed to play mostly trouble-free. So I blamed my old problems on my old ISP, though I wondered if the smoother gamepaly was due to playing off-season. This all leads to ESPN Football 2k5. I'm back to having terrible gameplay. My bandwidth meter results show consistent >1mbps both ways (seems my ISP has made some improvements). So I have no clue what the problem is. I can't believe the masses play under these conditions! I play other online games like RS3 and Burnout3, and they run beautifully smooth. So what gives with football? Any ideas, feedback? Last night we played pretty much a whole game in slow motion (I did get the 'network conditions might affect gameplay' message as a warning, but I seem to get that often) till it finally disconnected with 2 seconds left in the game! It makes the game unplayable at times and is very frustrating. Not for me it's not. In the 10+ games I've played online, I've never had a connection issue, even when the game first shipped. Actually, once I had a waiting for opponent screen, but that lasted for all of about 5 seconds, then everything was fine. I've never played an ESPN NFL 2K5 game that came even CLOSE to "unplayable". Frsutrating yeah, but that's my own fault for sucking at the game so much.
adamsappel
Take everything Ruffneck says about internet connection with a lump of salt, the guy has a pipe built for pr0n! For us mere mortals, yes, ESPN NFL 2K5 (anyone have issues with NHL or NBA?) seems particularly prone to spots of lag.
Bruce B
Since Carlucci sent me the older version of firmware for my router I have played about 25 straight games with zero lag and zero disconnects.

Let's try to stay on topic There's good feedback here though, thanks. I'll see if I can get info on my buddy's router and mine, and explore that angle. I'll also try the PS2 version and see how that goes. Before I got my wireless high-speed service, playing PS2 Madden on dial-up was smoother than my ESPN experiences, except for that one off-season game. Bruce, Are you implying that before your router firmware 'downgrade', you had connectivity issues with this game?
Bruce B
Bruce,Are you implying that before your router firmware 'downgrade', you had connectivity issues with this game? Absolutely. ALOT of disconnects. Not one since. Made all the difference in the world.
bgarcia
Bruce, Please provide the needed details here if you don't mind. It may benefit more than just me. Or if you'd prefer, drop me a pm with router details, and any ideas as to why the old firmware was more effective. Thanks.
Bruce B
This Thread was quite helpful to me because I used the Linksys router in question in the thread. If you are using the same router I believe I still have the file on my desktop at home to downgrade the firmware if you need it.

bgarcia
Can someone please check this link and give me feedback on where the problem may be? It's a basic line quality test through dslreports, but I have no idea where the problem is. I think birch.net is the T1 provider for my ISP, but I don't know if the problem is 'through' him or before him. Any thoughts/help appreciated. http://www.dslreports.com/quality/nil/1544870
