Good stuff. I really like that Plantronics headset (the second pic in the above link). Since I need a new headset, I think that may be the one.

I have the Plantronics Halo 2 headset and can attest to its quality. It's a bit difficult to get on at first (especially for those who wear glasses) but once on it's extremely comfortable and is a noticable sound improvement over the stock Live headset.

Thanks Camp. I am going to see if I can find one this weekend.

I also picked up the Halo 2 headset. The build quality is rather good, but I found that regardless of which of the 4 earpieces (there are 2 mushroom cap looking things and 2 earbuds so you can try getting a good fit) I could not get the headset to stay put without jamming the earpiece deep into my ear canal. It's too bad, the sound quality is quite good, but mine is going back to best buy today.

I looked at the pic and the Halo 2 headset looks identical to the Plantronic hands-free set I got from Verizon (except that the earbud is an earbud and not a canal-phone type). It costs $30 and is available at Verizon stores, Circuit City and Radio Shack.

I'll try it on Live next chance I get and let you know how it works. If the earpiece volume isn't an issue it'll be a cheaper alternative.

Jay, I will be real curious to know how the non-LIVE specific headsets work. I have played online with some guys that have 3rd party headsets, and there is always something amiss for me, not them. I don't think other headsets have the noise-cancellation circuitry built-in like the LIVE headsets do.

So even though it may sound fine to you, your headset might be transmitting the game sounds or echoing the voices back to the other players.

Be sure you get feedback (no pun intended) from your playing partners on whether they notice anything odd when YOU try out the headset.

Carlos.

I know what you mean, but it was my experience that cell phone sets are better than 3rd-party sets with not picking up extraneous sound (the 3rd party MadCatz set is particularly crappy with sending garbage sounds to other players).

My problem with the cell sets has always been that they aren't loud enough.

Either way, I'll be sure to check for feedback.

That's why I'm interested in the X10 and the X20 from Plantronics. They are Live-specific. And they let you lean back on a couch or chair. And they don't cost $50.

Is the X20 much different than the Halo one? I really can't tell how the X20 sits on your ear. I would rather save a few bucks, but not if it's going to uncomfortable or fall off. I use a Plantronics "over the ear" style at work (exactly like the Halo one) and I would prefer something similar at home.

I got my Halo headset at a meeting given by Plantronics sales reps. They covered the difference between the Halo headset and the other models and the major differences was with the noise cancelling (filtering room noise) and the quality of both the microphone & the headphone speaker. They made it clear that the x10 & x20 were positioned as "replacement" options while the Halo headset is a true upgrade over the stock Live headset.

BTW, the Halo headset is exactly the same as Plantronics' call center model which sells for $80. The only difference being the coloring (obviously).

That's me. I trade securities (stocks, bonds, options, mutual funds), so I am on the phone all day. Since I wear basically that same model I know it will be comfortable for me. Thanks again Camp, I almost changed my mind to save a few bucks. I think I will play it safe and spend a little more for something I know I will like.

Ok, I really don't want to give up on the Halo headset yet. Todd, since you wear one everyday, how far are you pushing the earpiece in? I had to have it in so that it basically closed off my ear entirely or the whole thing would easily slide off if I turned quickly. Is this similar to your experience with this headset or are my ears just being a PITA about using this thing.

BTW, for those of you with wireless controllers this is supposedly comning out next week. hip wireless headset

Mine just sits in my ear, I really don't push the earpiece in at all. We do have some people that just can't wear them, so they use the "over the head" style. I know what you mean about not sitting on you ear right b/c I have a Logitech Bluetooth headset for my cell phone that falls off if I move to much. I don't really care for it all that much.

It might be an upgrade for sound quality, but I have had absolutely no beef with the (Plantronics-made) standard Xbox live headset as far as room noise or echo, so I'm confident that the X10 and X20 will also be excellent in that respect. But most third party ones are terrible for noise and echo.

Yeah, I'm one of those people. I can't wear even the best on-ear/in-ear Plantronics or Hello Direct headsets. Not comfortable, just doesn't fit my ear.

Here is a good link with some nice close shots of all three Plantronics headsets.

Thanks, Todd!

Does anyone have experience wearing a headset with the same design as the x20? It seems to me that it's like a soft "clip" with your ear in the center. I've never seen anything like it before.

I have worn a plantronics with the exact same design as the Halo 2 version for about a year and find it extremely comfortable, even with my glasses.

The headset that comes with the LIVE kit has been tortuous to wear, so any one of these will be an improvement for me.

Yeah, the external design is identical to my Plantronics hands-free. It works just fine for me and is very comfortable, in the car and so on, but I wonder how it feels for extended gaming.

Actually, it's my second Plantronics of that design. Lucy ate the first one. No, I don't know how many now. I lost count.

The x10 looks like a winner to me. It appears to be a standard XBL mic and earpad with an over the head design, exactly what the stock headsets should have been from the start.

Anyone know when these go on sale, and where you can get one???

J.

I picked up the x20 at Gamestop this morning. Thing is absolutely tiny, weighs nothing, and comfortable. "Comfortable" is actually the wrong word, as you really can't even tell it's on, save for the cord coming down. I'm really impressed so far, though I havn't given the mic a good test, yet. I'm afraid that, because it's one of those mics that only goes down to the cheek, you'll need to talk fairly loud to be heard. We'll see.

On a side note - I downloaded the "attract" movie last night, and was blown away by what it shows of single player. I'm more anxious than ever to play this game.
