The Soul Still Burns...

Just got back from my local store with a brand new, straight out of the shipping carton copy of Soul Calibur 2!!

Quick notes after about half an hour of playing:

1. This game is really a testament to how good the Dreamcasts graphics could be. I don't think SC2 looks that much better than SC1.

2. I LIKE Spawn. He's a heavy hitter, and only good at closer range, but damn he's cool. I like his second outfit the best.

Yup, just picked up my copy as well. The only problem with this version is that I can't play it with my DC arcade stick. However, I heard that liksang sells some sort of "magicbox" that works with the arcade stick. Has anyone here had any success with this digamajig?

Quick question... is there a tutorial mode in this game? The most time I've spent with a fighting game would be Monkey Fight in Super Monkey Ball...

EdR, you won't need a tutorial. One of the nicest things about Soul Calibur is how well the game just seems to flow from your controlls. But yes there is a practice/tutorial part in all Namco fighters.

I'll echo what Kelley said. Picking up Soul Calibur II should be a snap, the game is designed to be fun and accessible. If you were ever thinking about getting into fighters, this would be the series to start with, very user-friendly but not dumbed down. It's how I got into them :).

Unfortunately, all the 'magicbox' type-things I've seen only work with DC pads, not sticks - they don't map the C and Z buttons, which are distinct from the pad's L and R.

If anyone were ever to find one I'd be absolutely ecstatic, however.

Got mine too!!!

I was really hoping for Spawn to be as good a fighter as he is cool, and I'm not disappointed one bit. I've played about two hours so far, and he's all I've used!

He also looks the business.

Gotta watch LOTR Two Towers now! Will return to SC tomorrow. :D

I was just reading the review of SCII at GameSpot, I thought this was funny:

However, many of the character voices, such as for Mitsurugi and Raphael, are much better in the Japanese language track, especially since some of the English translations are nonsensical. For example, Nightmare, a ferocious half-man possessed by the evil spirit contained in the sword known as Soul Edge, might viciously defeat his foe, only to declare: "Go away!"

For some twisted reason, this makes me want the game even more! :P

I think I might pick this up tomorrow...it just looks like too much fun.

It's in today's Fry's ad for $49.99 (reg $99.99).

Oh swearword bloody swearword. Its only 4 TIMES that to get one in the UK.

Our only hope of decent sticks in the UK is to either import them, or hotwire old Dreamcast ones; no shops stock decent sticks at all. Its just not fair, I tell you.

is it truly 720P as it says on the box? Holy crap that's cool!

Yes, it's 720p, but it's a 4:3 window in a 16:9 frame. I've been playing the import for over a month and prefer playing in 480p widescreen to the windowed 720p mode. 720p does look good though :D

Huh, well, I played it in 720p but set my projector to "crop" mode, which blows up the image and trims off the left and right...it looks great, but I'm not sure it's any better than 480p (which I haven't tried yet).

Fun game, I can see that my reaction times are going to have to get better... :P

So I put the Xbox in 480p mode and there's no contest, for whatever reason, putting the game in 720p and scaling it up (using "crop" mode on the projector) looks better. I was surprised, since it seems like they would be the same. It's a very impressive looking game, at times almost photo-realistic.

I'm also enjoying the game a lot, it's really quite fun. The combat system is deep, but it works well enough to just spontaneously combine buttons and see what you get :)

I played vs mode with a friend today and it was a blast, in fact he was so impressed he's probably going to get an Xbox.

I'm most impressed with Talim, she is great to fight with, very quick and devastating. My friend, being fond of Asian girls was also quite taken with her :)

I also LOVE Necrid (is that the right name) - his 'fabrication' of weapons is just brilliant, love it.

This has turned out to be an amazing week for games, 4 new games that I am thoroughly enjoying, and they are all so different, it's great!

Namco acutally got lazy with SoulCalibur II and used a middlware program to make it. They had to go all the way to the source for the Dreamcast.

Think of it. SoulCalibur II consists of TWO CHARACTERS with a background. I sincerely doubt that can push the XBox's hardware. Look at Dead or Alive III or Ninja Gaiden for more proof.

Believe me, SoulCalibur II is one of my favorite games of all time, but I still think Namco took a liberty here and there.

Can I respectfully say that you're crazy? Using middleware is not a "Lazy" option - it's an time & cost effective way of getting a game delivered on time and on budget. With good design/programming, it has little impact on the quality of the game.

Hell, even for teams that don't make a song & dance about using "middleware", they're still using in-house shared engines, you just don't hear about it - it's effectively the same deal as going to Criterion & buying a Renderware licence.
