Do anything for Halloween?

Just curious to see if people did anything notable for Halloween.

I'm generally laid back in, well, all things, so I don't normally make a huge effort to get out though I know I won't be able to this year period.

But I always like to play a little Res Evil at some point on Halloween night, to fry up some zombies, so I was wondering what else people did to mark the occasion besides egg things and try to steal candy from children? ;)

Take the kids (3 yrs and 1.5 respectively) out trick or treating in our neighborhood. Try not to be overcome by the unbearable Disneyness of them dressed in full body Pooh/Piglet costumes and their friend (also 3 yrs) dressed as Tigger. If I see an Eyore or Owl on the route I might fall down.

Other than that, probably watching whatever killer horror movies the stations run late that night (hoping for Halloween or Hellraiser this year.)

Oh yeah, and shooting a hobo. Always have to shoot a hobo to appease Satan on All Hallow's Eve.

For the past 5 or 6 years running we did up the whole front of the house and the side yard with props, fog machines, strob lights, etc. We'd dress up and pop out and scare the kids, I have a leatherface outfit complete with a chainsaw I picked up cheap at a pawnshop, I just took the chain off of it. Unfortunately we had too many problems last year with 16-17 year olds with no costumes causing trouble so for the first time in years we're doing nothing, not even giving out candy. I'm guessing I'll order a pizza and watch horror movies all night long.

Lucky bastard :)

Are they doing any quests, Joey?

The devs held their weekly Q/A session this week and had a sneak peak of what they intend to do for Halloween. Here's a link to some of the screenshots.

CoH Halloween test

These were all level 2-5 mobs and there's supposed to be some new monsters that will be haunting the streets come Sunday. I'll be there protecting the streets as usual :tu:

Going to a Halloween party on Friday night, taking the kids out on Saturday night and then probably fighting with my wife over who will be experiencing the CoH Halloween event. ;) I suppose if she wins (which I am sure she will), I'll just have a horror movie marathon or maybe check out IFC's Italian Horror Movie Marathon, hosted by Tom Savini. :tu:

Well Halloween as always been near and dear to me. This year Halloween marks my 30th year of existence. We are therefore throwing a bit of a shindig. My wife?s parents have been gracious enough to let us take over their house Saturday night and we have invited both friends and family to a Masquerade. I?m looking forward to it more and more as the days progress.

The best part will be the costumes. My wife and stepson are going to be Oompa Loompas and I get to be the master Chocolatier himself. It?s going to be a hoot.

Usually someone throws a halloween party, although they never are as fun as Josh's sounds.

I shift my movie watching towards the horror genre throughout October, culminating with a viewing of The Shining. The Shining has a strong effect on me, so it can take me a couple of days to watch the whole thing. :P

Silly me, I just realized what I had originally planned to be doing this Halloween until work precluded me; boardgaming!

Having moved recently I have a new boardgame group together with some friends of mine and we try to play once a week. Our latest flavor has been an excellent horror-based game called Betrayal At House on the Hill (no 'the'). Basically, everybody takes control of one of twelve characters and starts to explore a traditional horror mansion.

The mansion's built piece by piece with rooms drawn from a pile and added on, so it's different every time. As players explore, they get items and experience strange phenomena that alters their stats (it's very, very lightly RPG-ish; no DM and no carryover between games, but you do have stats) and they draw Omen cards.

Every time a player draws an Omen card, they have to make a Haunt roll to see if they start the Haunt. If they roll one fewer than the number of Haunt cards in play, the Haunt starts, which is where the game gets really interesting. At this point, players consult a table at the front of the manual that lists all the omens and the rooms they are drawn in. This corresponds to a specific scenario, of which there are fifty in total.

The chart also lets you know which player has become the traitor (hence the game title). The heroes get one booklet and the traitor gets the other and they each read the specific scenario outlined. Now each group has a specific set of victory conditions they are trying to accomplish and often they are unknown to the other group. For example, in the first game we played, the traitor was leading a pack of vicious cannibals and the heroes were trying to get the intended victims out the front door to safety while putting an end to the evil clan.

It's great fun and one of the best boardgames I've played in ages. Here are a couple of pics of the game in action... Sorry they aren't huge or anything ;).

I'm glad somebody got to play it last weekend ;).

Last weekend was the first weekend since the game came out that we haven't played it. And we're still only through ten scenarios or so :P.

Oh, and I should mention it. The rules for this game do sometimes require interpretation, but there's an FAQ up at http://www.avalonhill.com now that addresses basically all questions and clears up some things. We weren't having a problem, but just a quick fyi :tu:

My other Halloween game pick is Fury of Dracula, but it costs about $75US on eBay so it's not quite so easy to obtain ;).

San Francisco takes Halloween seriously. This year there are 2 street parties in my neighborhood. Last night was the first one, kind of a warm up, and tonight will be the main event, with hundreds of thousands of people showing up (last year it was 300,000!).

I will go out and see all of the freaks, and take pictures. After a while it gets exceedingly crowded, which is my cue to head back home. But during the early part of the night (before midnight) it's a heck of a lot of fun.

How is that different from the other 364 days a year in SFO? ;) [/b]

Now that you mention it, I guess it's not. :)
