Resident Evil 4

Well, it certainly isn't the best news for Nintendo, but the fact remains that the GameCube version will be out long before the PS2 version arrives. According to that link, it's set to debut on PS2 around the world at the end of 2005, whereas it will be in stores (here in the States anyway) on January 11.

Either way, I'm sure it will sell really well on both systems.

I'm not too shocked by the news either. It's been said there is no definitive stance on Nintendo even maintaining the series to itself on the next generation of consoles, and Resident Evil 4 on the PS2 would seem to at the very least pave the way for it to be multi-format in future, or indeed entirely back to Sony when the PS3 hits.

I'm not too sure it is that damaging to Nintendo however, not with an eleven month lead on the title. By Winter of next year a lot of consumer and press attention will be on the next wave of consoles prior to their launch in 2006 so sure, in the long term it may be a blow to them, but I don't think there are many who don't expect RE games to grace more than one of the next generation consoles.

Word from IGN is that Capcom has not buried the possibility of an Xbox port in the future. You can read the report here:

http://cube.ign.com/articles/562/562367p1.html

Capcom is not slamming the door on other, future ports, either. "The possibility of Resident Evil 4 coming to the Xbox has yet to be determined," a company rep replied when quizzed on the subject.

Yeah, that befuddles me. If you're going to port PS2, why not port to the X-Box as well? I know Capcom's hardly prolific on the 'Box, but the interest in RE4 is high enough that I figure they'd push more than a few copies.

I'm in favor of anything that sees more RE games in my future :tu:

According to an article at SciFi Wire,Resident Evil 4 will be released late 2005 on the PS2,& will no longer be a Nintendo GameCube exclusive.

My thoughts - while I can see Capcom wanting to make some more money from the game,it still will be only available for the GC for some time after it comes on in January. I wouldn't expect anymore GC exclusives from them,though...

I merged Calvin general discussion thread with this one and have moved the entire discussion into general discussion given the open ended Xbox question. Please continue to discuss as normal fellas.

Oh and by the way.....

 A little humor for you guys. I know I'll be buying my version of RE4 on the Gamecube this January. I know it sucks to lose an exclusive for the GC but Mark makes a great point. The more people that get the game, the better.

Haven't played anything on it since, literally, last December!!!

Not too take the conversation too off-track Jordan but I wanted to ask what kind of games do you enjoy in general? Just wanting to get an idea of what genres you enjoy. The main reason I ask is that there have been a number of recently released games on the Gamecube that deserve taking a look at. Games like Paper Mario 2, Donkey Konga, Viewtiful Joe, Pikmin 2, Tales of Symphonia etc. There is plenty of really great stuff on the Cube to make it worth keeping along with up and comers like Baten Kaitos and Metroid Prime 2.

I initally got the 'Cube strictly for RE. The major problem I have is that my LOUSY-ass Blockbuster here does not seem to want to get the majority of those titles you mentioned! I probably would at least rent Paper Mario 2 and Donkey Konga, but they're just not here, and I blew my game buying budget pre-ordering Halo 2 and probably Half Life 2.

Jordan you may want to try out a Gamefly account my man. Check it out here:

10-day free trial right off the bat if you want to give it a try first. I'd definitely recommend giving it a whirl and checking out some those releases. The Gamecube does lack a steady stream of releases but those that are out there are really damn good and worth checking out.

It's sort of funny to read some of the reactions from Nintendo fans on the Internet about this move. As you'd expect, many of them a wee ticked off by this announcement. Some even had the audacity to suggest that the only reason Capcom decided to bring the game over to the PS2 was so that they could -- and this is the most absurd part -- make more money. I mean, whoever heard of such a crazy thing? According to them, Capcom has so much money already that they don't need to make any more.

It never ceases to amaze me how small a role logic and cognitive thought play on most Internet discussions.

Well, easy way to tell, how did Viewtiful Joe do when it came out on PS2? It had a similar lead-time right?

Well, I did find these numbers here in this thread over at the PlanetGameCube Forums (the afore mentioned website with whiney Nintendo fanboys):

Viewtiful Joe (GC): 260,986

Viewtiful Joe (PS2): 32,690

If those numbers are accurate, I think it's safe to say that Viewtiful Joe is not setting the PS2 world on fire. It will be very interesting to see how Viewtiful Joe 2 fares, since both games are set to come about at the same time on both PS2 and the Cube.

I'm not sure that those numbers are a good way of telling how Resident Evil 4 will sell on both systems. Viewtiful Joe strikes me as something a bit more niche, whereas Resident Evil is more mainstream and has a much stronger brand history with gamers. As I said earlier, the game will sell really well on both systems no matter what.

I won't get any direct benefit since I plan on getting it on the Gamecube, but the upheaval on the Gamecube board at Gamefaqs is providing quite a bit of personal entertainment.

Penny Arcade as usual has some relevant thoughts on the issue above:
