Calvin
The title says it all. I've seen many people praise Xbox Live. Others for SonyOnline. And there has been online PC gaming for years now. But not everyone does it, & not everyone likes it. I've seen a few people here & there stating that they won't renew their XBL subscription. So which is it? I've been online since day one with both SOCOM, the first PS2 online game - & as a beta tester for Xbox Live. I can honestly say that I'm buying titles that otherwise I wouldn't have gotten - & that games that would have been back on the shelf months ago are still seeing use. (Heck, I just played my last game of NFL 2K3 yesterday!) My answer is a resounding yes. :green:
Robot Monkey
I've been gaming online with consoles since my Dreamcast and I've found it to be a must-have for a single-system owner. I don't need it, or want it, for all games, but I've found that 1) it's a whole new experience (one that I enjoy) for many games like FPS's and racers and 2) It improves the shelf life of other games (like Splinter Cell). And why does Nightwing look fat in your Avatar? -j
Graeme
I've been gaming online since I got a computer and had to use Kali to play Warcraft 2, C&C (DOS) and Duke3D with unbearable lag. Quake was out then too but it was tough to play before Quakenet. I didn't get my Dreamcast online because of Sega's shortsightedness, but I hooked up the XBox as soon as I could. Mark E
I've always been fairly critical of online gaming, but I do love it. I've played solely PC games online, starting with Duke Nukem 3D and original Command & Conquer, up through Warcraft 2, StarCraft, Red Alert, Red Alert 2, and finally getting hardcore into Half-Life and Counter-Strike. Very dependent on the people though, and with the large majority of people online being assholes I find that a good single-player experience does me just fine too. To be honest, I prefer face-to-face multiplayer, whether on linked consoles or split screen where viable. My favorite multi-player game of the moment, actually, is probably Super Smash Bros. Melee for that very reason.
Chris
YES! I've only had the Xbox online for a few days, but am enjoying it immensely. I hope to have the PS2 hooked up later this week. Although, my experience so far has led me to the conclusion that you should change the first poll option to "Yes - complete waste of time"
Fugms
How many people are friends now that probably would have never met if it werent for online gaming? Yeah! its for me!
kelley
To tell the truth, who knows if this site would be here if it wasn't for online gaming and some of us getting to know each other through it.
JFo
I will admit that I am in the super minority on this, but I voted no. It's not that I don't like playing games online. I had a blast playing Mechassault and Return to Castle Wolfenstein on Xbox Live, but I'm far more interested in single player experiences or multi-player games when everyone is in the same room. Also, I have a thing about getting my ass continuously kicked by other players, which is usually what happens to me when I play against others online. I don't like it. I can stand it if the computer is beating me senseless in a single-player game, but if it's against another person (especially one I don't know), I revert to the emotional maturity of a 4 year-old. Being angry and frustrated at some punks I don't even know isn't my idea of a good time. On the other hand, if I ever find the chance to play something with you guys... Fugms
I'm far more interested in single player experiences or multi-player games when everyone is in the same room. I wonder what the odds are of getting a few of us together for link play? we can do east coast vs. west vs. central. There is quite a few of us within a couple hours drive. Hell theres four others within ten minutes fo me! just a thought... P.S. I dont want to leave out our northern neighbors.... How bout U.S vs World! MrJames
My first real online gaming experience was with Socom. I've been at it ever since. It has really drawn me in and I don't see that changing any time soon.
Angry the Clown
When I get broadband running (soon), I'd say it's for me yes. I've enjoyed Medal Of Honour multiplayer a great deal and that's really been my only online gaming experience.... I'm not huge on playing people I don't really know, even in online circumstances. To band together with a bunch of friends from the world over to play a game is the greatest appeal, so when I get onto Live and can join in some of the LCVG member games, I'll be quite at ease. EnemaEms
You betcha. I've been addicted to online gaming since Counter-Strike Beta 4. I can't even imagine what CS is going to be like on Live. Asshats Wild indeed. I've been online since day one with both SOCOM, the first PS2 online game Sorry sir, but I believe that honor belongs to Tony Hawk 3. -Dean-
xPieter
OK, so I've been Live for 6 days now, but so far the experience has been awesome. I'd put off going online for a long time because I didn't see much attraction. What's the difference being beat by the computer or by a person, I thought. Silly me. Getting beaten by a person is so much more intense and satisfying. And the thrill of victory? It's terrific. Granted, the only person I've ever defeated in a one on one game is my friend in the next town over. But it's still a very cool experience and almost as much fun as sitting in the same room. I haven't played a non-online capable game since getting Live. Pieter
cane corso
My first online game was NFL2k on the Dreamcast. I thought it was great. Which had me playing games (Age of Empires, Rainbow Six, etc) on my PC. However, the dail-up didn't hold out for very long and my online fun came to a quick halt. Until recently, I could not play Live b/c we did not have broadband in my area. The last month or so I have bought more games than I have all year. All this b/c of online play. I have only been playing for a few weeks, but it's been great so far. Forums like this make it even better.
Hank Scorpio
I've been playing games online since the days of the SNES, using that all-powerful piece of equipment called XBAND. I think the only game I played on that was MKII, which was horribly laggy - but a good time anyway. Then I was offline until the Dreamcast. It was the first chance I had to game with a lot of the people who frequent this forum. NBA 2K1 was fun, so was NFL 2K1. But the most fun for me was running around with Romier, Joel, and others in PSO. I think I logged about 40 hours in a month. And now with Xbox, I've been on Live since day one. I was using GameSpy before that and still do for Halo - even with all its flaws because of the tunneling system. The PS2 has only seen extended online time with Socom. I'm sure the same will be said when number 2 comes out, and maybe Resident Evil Online as well. The only problem I have is finding the time to join everyone. I work second shift, and it's rare that I can join in on a game before 10 pm central. And even with all the fun I've had online, I still enjoy a good single player game and love playing through adventure games or RPGs.
Ryan FB
Yes, but only on games that work for dialup (there's no broadband available in my area). So pretty much just PC games that have well-written multiplayer code that lets them still be playable on my connection. My favorite of late has been Ghost Recon and it's expansions, if you have a good team of people you know this game is immensely fun. I've been playing online since the direct-connect days of multiplayer Doom though, and was thoroughly addicted to Quake and Quake II multiplayer (especially CTF on Q2)...fun stuff. fishepa
I love playing online games, but I hate breaking out the 20ft patch cable to play. Once my wife and I finally get our new house together, I'll be doin it wireless.
Kitlope
I'm online too, using the pc. Once I started playing Battlefield 1942 online my whole gaming future just flashed before my eyes. I sold my PS2 for more expensive RD (rambus) ram and wait for more good pc online games. I swore to myself I would never shoot another bot again. Reading all this x-box stuff and all of you being on line using it makes me want an x box to come join the fun! But alas, I won't be getting one soon
Kain rising
Yup, started with Unreal (pre-UT days) and got Live the day it was released. I think online gaming is getting better all the time (especially with the aforementioned Live )
