EGM Reviews P.N.03 (56k warning, large gif)

Once I saw the first trailer for P.N. 03, Capcom's stylish new game starring the sexy Vanessa (see avatar to the left ;) ), I immediately fell in love with it. Even though I had read a few mediocre reviews of the import version, I still had hope that the game would be "good enough". I just wanted to play the damn game because it just looked so cool and exciting!

I think Im going to be a little disappointed. EGM says the game is an extremely repetitive shooter with basically no plot or storyline. They describe the control as "stiff" with "simple shot and dodge gameplay." Final score 4.0, 5.0, 4.0. I think I might spend my cash on something else and just rent this.

Vanessa is a great character design doomed to live life trapped in a boring game. :( Sounds like it might be time for a new avatar, huh?

Doesn't Play give everything of Japanese origin a good review? ;)

I love the concept, but the footage I saw on XPlay recently really turned me off - it strikes me as Space Channel 5 as an arcade shooter, but not in a good way. It's got potential which is what makes it all the more annoying.

Roll on Viewtiful Joe.

I was hoping you'd get it anyway and give us a more personal review.

I'm going to rent it for sure and give it a good spin. I've been a little short on cash anyway, and there's way more out there that I'm interested in. Always think positive! :D

Hell yes.

Everything I've seen of it says that its a score-orientated shoot-em-up that happens to be using a 3D viewpoint. Yes, its repetitive, in that its just going from one room (screen) to another, shooting everything along the way, using varying amounts of style to increase your score while remaining alive.

I think the problem a lot of western mags are having is that it looks like Lara, but plays like a 2D shooter. I might be wrong, and its actually crap, though.

Has anyone played this yet? I saw an extended commercial tonight and was seized with the urge to play. It just looks so damn cool. I went to three Blockbusters and a Hollywood Video and nobody had it (not as in they were all checked out, they didn't even bother to order copies). So, any vicarious experiences for me? Is it a real rhythm game, in that what you do affects the music and/or you're following musical commands, or does it just have a techno soundtrack and the main character shakes her ass?

LOL, I haven't even tried to find this to rent yet. I guess the reviews just really turned me off and i really havent had the time to play anything besides Joe and the other games I have right now.

Buuuut, speaking of Joe, I was playing it the other day and they have that preview for the game and I really got the urge to play PN 03 again. And yes I do agree with you, I think it's the techno music, the eye candy, and just the way she shakes her ass. ;)

I do know there is someone here on the forum that has played and beat the game, but I can't remember who it was.

I played this for about 15 minutes tonight. My local Game Crazy finally had a used copy for sale and they let me try it out. It was frustrating at first in that you can't move and shoot, you must come to a stop before Vanessa will let loose with her dance-generated blasts. Once I got a little bit better with the controls, I thought it was interesting, but I wasn't going to spend $29.99 on it. I can't imagine it sold very well, but I haven't seen it marked down anywhere. Anyone else had a chance with it?

I really have to get this when I've got time. Personally, I'm convinced I'll love it, because I'm just expecting a big dumb shooting game with loads of style. But I'm on a regime of:

1) Only the value of one full-price game a month, and with this month going on 1080, next on Psyvariar 2, and the following on R-Type Final (that hits towards the end of March here) and the Midway set, it'll be ages before I can get it, and also

2) One new game only for each game I 'complete' (where complete will be bent to fit whatever I define it as). Fortunately, I'm only three rounds off the end of PGR2, and 1080 is falling fast.

Cameron you're fortunate I didn't clear my cache out last night or else you'd be shit out of luck ;) . Thankfully though I was able to find the.gif in my temp files and its now uploaded to the safe confines of the LCVG server.

Recommendation for the casting of a Vanessa in a movie:

POTENTIALLY NOT WORK SAFE!! (but damned nice)

Give her short hair and put those 2 pictures side by side. :green:

For those that still have doubts Scott (AKA Buck) has given his approval:

DEFINITELY NOT WORK SAFE!

Actually, I'm rather fond of P.N.03 as a game. It's definitely worth finding it at Best Buy for $10. You'll have a better time playing if you understand from the start that Vanessa cannot move and shoot at the same time. I found the shooting system to be innovative and visually, um, stimulating. For those willing to play through to the end, the last "suit" Vanessa wears is almost her birthday one (I think it's a G-string bikini).
