XSN Sports is now up...

Ive been checking it out this morning. Very easy to create tournaments or seasons. You can do these with 4,8,16 or 32 players. Public or private with different options for how long the league is, how long between playoff games and so on. Kind of stinks you cant do custom number of people but oh well. I like the interface. Just have to give everything a test once our league for fever begins.

I browsed the site just now (http://www.xsnsports.com) and it seems pretty neat. The player profile features details by game (like number of fourth down conversion percentage, passing yards, rushing yards, etc.) and even has a trophy case.

I'm looking forward to seeing xsn implementation on other titles, especially non-MS and non-sports titles (like CounterStrike or Raven Shield).

I hope so, but I think what will happen is MS will allow other publishers to create their own similar services.

I agree with that view. Similar features will be used (even encouraged by Microsoft) but I doubt you'll ever see the XSN logo on a Sega product.

Does Sega and EA have something comparable to XSN on the PS2? I was given this impression at some point. Also, ever since I heard about XSN, the first question that came to mind was:

Why is a PC necessary to add these features? Why can't this be done using just the XBOX? Don't get me wrong, I like being able to manage this type of information in 1024x768 with a mouse in hand, but I figured PC access would be a bonus, not the backbone of the feature. Anyone else wonder this?

MS may just 'brand' the service or license out some of the back-end code.

Who knows, it's way too early to tell. And this is very speculative.

One thing for sure - if MS intentionally monopolizes functionality like this (refusing to even allow brackets and such for Sega and others), they could lose third party support...which would be a BIG mistake.

One MS rep said it was exclusive to them 'at least for now'.

As long as they have their own premier sports franchises, they're between a rock and a hard place with it. They need it as a selling point for their own games to differentiate it amongst the likes of EA & ESPN, but as you say, monopolising it may help drive off third party support in the long run.

MS has stated that XSN is particular to their products, and that other developers could develop their own comparable service in the future. What I think has happened is that MS didn't create a development platform for third party developers, they created hooks in XBlive catered specifically to the functional requirements of XSN... it is probably a huge initiative to take the next step for creating an SDK for web integration with XBlive.

I agree though, that it should become a priority to open this up to developers. I just think it is easier said than done. MS probably wants to make it as easy as integrating the standard XBlive menus, which requires time to do.

Sega was able to create their own online league for the PS2 football game, so I gotta believe that the only thing stopping them from doing the same on XBox is Microsoft.

Or time. Or money. Or both.

Why do it if it can be avoided this year? I would guess that the PS2 version got this features in order to help distinguish it from Madden -- the Xbox version is already distinguished by online play. So why not save time and money by skipping those features on the Xbox version this year?

Because they already have the technology, so I wouldn't think it would take much more effort, time or money to port it over. VC also stated in an interview that they were looking into similar features for XBox but would have to work it out with MS.

And Madden has/will have similar features.

VC created an entirely propietary system for the PS2 version of NFL2K4. Such a system does not work with XBlive, it has to be built to interface with XBlive. This was probably something neither party had the time to negotiate during what was probably a six month window. I would bet the story went a little like that, and that VC plans for those features for next years game.
