foogledricks
I think it is time to abolish the crutch that the poor communicators on this site use. If you're "just kidding" then stop wasting my time? Or if what you said is worth my time because it is so damn funny, then have faith that I know it is funny, so don't wink at me or I'll poke out your open eye with my fountain pen. The same goes for the "thumbs up people" who are just trying to be agreeable to have people like them. Stick that thumb somewhere else, because people won't like you with or without it. All this means to me is that you're gay. Or performing a rapid gay act. Or performing a slower gay act. A picture may mean a thousand words, but frankly, some people on this forum could benefit from using less words.
Starhawk
I always thought smilies were necessary for internet speak as you cant read a persons tone of voice. Sadly, if the issue is abolishing poor communication, banning smilies will do more harm than good.

Ryan FB
Hmmm, I've composed all sorts of sarcastic replies to this, but I think any of them would get me banned without an obligatory "please-don't-kill-me-it's-a-joke" wink smiley. Shit, I was even heavily tempted to use one at the end of that sentence.

foogledricks
Shit, I was even heavily tempted to use one at the end of that sentence. That's right! It is an addiction isn't it. Try to post for one week without smilies. You'll either be very misunderstood or flat out banned. On the flip side, smilies let you get away with murder. For example: Ryan, you're a prick fanboy communist redneck girl-man Go to hell everyone in this thread Moderators can eat my ass You see, I'm exempt. I can't be touched! I could threaten the president in an email, and just put an old winky in there, and I'm fine.

Though I do agree that the winky smiley is overused, I think it needs to be said from a non-mod stand point that it is not Kryiptonyte nothing is, excpet for kryiptonyte itself. If you are joking with some one its one thing but if you are blatenly herassing someone no about of winkey is going to save you. These are just some of the same issues that we had with the old board just being rehashed, stiring the flames.........
dogbert
You see, I'm exempt. [mod hat on]Actually, no you're not. A smilie doesn't make insults okay at all. It wouldn't excuse racism for example.

foogledricks
Hey, where the hell is the smiley at the end! Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean its not there. You just have to figure it out for yourself. And that is half the fun. People here are so used to seeing them, that when they don't see them, they're like, "Does he really want to shove an Xbox up JTello's ass?" I trust most people here to tell the difference. And yes, Joel's ass is big enough.

For example: [/quote'] On a serious note, smilies are surrogates for tone-of-voice (aka "prosody"). Tone-of-voice in spoken conversation carries a lot of information, mostly about emotional context. Just like you can abuse tone-of-voice to subtly slam someone even though you literally say something nice, the same goes for smilies. You might think, "well, if they are so necessary, how come after 8000 years of written word we've done fine without them?" The difference is that parts of the internet, like forums, most email, and especially chat, are conversational - which is a role written language has rarely had, and certainly never on the massive scale that the internet demands. Conversational writing is nothing like a novel, or a research paper.

Romier S
Ed's post is on the money about the smilies. So, to answer the obviously silly question, no we are not banning smilies on LCVG. Also, keep in mind gents that this thread is firmly tongue in cheek. I don't think it was Kieth's intention to outright insult anyone (except for J-Tello of course but what's changed. ) and I would hate for anyone to take it as such. Nothing wrong with having a little fun. Nine hundred and eighty one words were spared in the making of this post through the avoidance of smileys. I don't know why but I laughed my ass off at that. EDIT: Also guys, I recently recieved some reports on this thread from some of the members. I'm personally enjoying this somewhat "offbeat" discussion and would like to see it continue. Please try to keep the vulgarity and racial comments to a minimum.
foogledricks
Since in the spirit of this thread I cannot use smilies to convey truth and the irony within, I thank Futurevoid for stepping up and casting light for those languishing in the dark. For my next thread, I'd like to callout people's ridiculous LCVG usernames, and why anyone without some portion of George Bush's image in their avatar are unpatriotic. Wait a second, what happened to my Bushladen avatar? Did the mods secretly take the switchover as an opportunity to oppress my Bushladen!? Well you asked for it! I will think long and hard about what my NEW avatar will be! Get ready for Joel's ass composited with Mario & Luigi.
