Now supporting the evil empire...I got an Xbox

I finally have joined the Xbox crowd. Microsoft is now getting some of my money.

You know how frickin' hard it is to get an Xbox these days?? Target, Meijer, Media Play, Best Buy, Gamestop - no Xboxes. Everyone was like "I haven't seen one since before Christmas"

At Circuit City today the guy said that 2 were coming in on the truck and as soon as they were released he would sell one to me. In the few minutes between release and him trying to ring me up, they sold online for instore pickup. Dammit.

So I bought a used Xbox from a local game shop. It has a new Thompson II DVD-ROM in it...for $118. It came with a 3rd-party controller (yucky) but I'm sure I will end up going for a wireless controller anyway.

After spending $40 on an Xbox live starter kit, $20 on the Advanced A/V pack (a must for the projector...even if it is only 480p), and $38 for Halo 2 @ CC...this is quite an investment. Hopefully I enjoy it. Hopefully I can adjust to FPS on dual analog as I am a mouse/keyboard FPS gamer by training.

Questions:

Any cheap but quality Xbox games? There were a few Xbox games I wanted to play - Knights of the Old Republic is on my list to buy, as is Panzer Dragoon Orta. My wife wants to play Fable really bad, so I have to get that if I can find a deal on it. Maybe cheap online games?

Oh yeah, and I need an online fighting game of some sort. That's half the reason for me buying the Xbox. Arcades are extinct around here. Damn Namco, Tekken 5 has no online play.

Is there a wireless controller/wireless headset combo that isn't ungodly expensive? I saw the Logitech wireless headset but GEEZ, $70??

I gave up my lift-top coffee table for the xbox, dammit, so I had better enjoy it. :D

It joins my PS2, GC, SNES, NES, DC, Saturn, Genesis. More games I don't have time to play.

Any cheap but quality Xbox games?

Yager seems to be getting some good word of mouth, and it's only $9.99. There's also a slew of good games that should be able to be found for $19.99 or less:

  • Syberia
  • Syberia 2
  • Metal Arms (actually I just stumbled across this deal, Soul Calibur 2 and Metal Arms for only $19.99)
  • Silent Hill 2
  • Morrowind: GOTY
  • Project Gotham Racing 2
  • SSX 3
  • Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy
  • Beyond Good & Evil
  • ESPN NFL 2k5
  • Crimson Skies
  • Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
  • Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
  • Shenmue II
  • Freedom Fighters
  • Otogi: Myth of Demons
  • Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Deathrow
  • Outrun 2
  • Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
  • Hunter: The Reckoning
  • Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer
  • Armed and Dangerous

Oh yeah, and I need an online fighting game of some sort. That's half the reason for me buying the Xbox. Arcades are extinct around here. Damn Namco, Tekken 5 has no online play.

Mortal Kombat: Deception and DOA: Ultimate seem to be the biggies in the 3D online arena. I think there's a few online 2D fighters as well, but I'm not sure which ones to recommend.

There's the Wideye wireless controller which will let you use your existing corded headset.

Gamefly has free shipping on their pre-played games right now. I believe Fable wasaround $27. Great price for a great game.

For good cheap games:

Links (if you like golf)

ESPN 2K5 (if you like football)

Crimson Skies

KOTOR is a must have

Ninja Gaiden can be had for cheap now as well

Rallysport Challenge 2 if you like racing games. This one is a fav of mine.

I'd go with an all Sega lineup.

Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, JSRF, NBA2K5, NFL2K5

Other than that, I like the games on Ryan's list with the exception of the Hunter and Syberia games, which I used to own but sold on account of their suckiness. Morrowind is a good way to spend a few hundred hours, and Deathrow is a riot.

Don't buy Halo though. Or Halo 2. JFO is trying to trick you with sarcasm. ;)

Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, JSRF, NBA2K5, NFL2K5

I would also add Gunvalkyrie to the list. I know it's not the most loved Sega game in the world but it can be had for cheap and once you get the control scheme down, it's extremely fun. It's not something I would recommend at 50 bucks since you may play it and despise it outright, however at the 7-10 bucks it's going for these days it's worth a shot. I personally loved the hell out of it.

Ryans list is one to pick from. Alot of really good games. Along with the original Otogi, I woudl also recommend it's sequel. You'll be floored by the destruction you can cause in both those games. I see you already have Panzer Dragoo Orta on the list.....good man. :tu A few cheapies you can get also include:

Breakdown - multi-npc combat can be difficult to master but the story is worth it

Carve - very fun little Jet-Ski game. Was very popular around here for a long time.

Rallisport Challenge 2 - One of the prettiest games you will ever see. It also happens to be an extremely kick ass arcade rally racer.

Oh yeah, and I need an online fighting game of some sort.

Yessir. I myself enjoy a good fighting game.

Mortal Kombat Deception is the current champion of online fighting games IMHO. It is absolutely lag free and feels as though the person in the room right next to you. It also includes various modes of gameplay (chess kombat and puzzle kombat) that are each quite fun and add online longevity besides just pounding away at the competition. The gameplay is distinctly Mortal Kombat (ie dial-a-combos) so for many it's a love it or leave it affair.

If the gameplay of MK doesn't do it for you though, you can also take a look at Dead or Alive Ultimate. You get the original Dead or Alive and a remade version of Dead or Alive 2. Both are playable online but the games performance can be spotty with heavy bouts of lag if alot of people are in a room (the game allows 8 players in a room to simulate an arcade experience. So other folks can switch off fighting etc.).

As Joey mentioned Guilty Gear X2 is also available for a bargain price. I've not played many games of this online (in fact only about 2 to be quite honest.) Both games were not entirely smooth but did not affect gameplay. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is deep and enjoyable. Would love to have someone else to play this with online.

Keep on the look out for Street Fighter Anniversary which is due for release on the Xbox Feb. 22. You get a slew of classic Street Fighter games along with Street Fighter III Third Strike playable online.

Now if only Sega would do an online version of Virtua Fighter......I swear my wife would leave me from neglect. :D

Couple I haven't seen mentioned yet that you should be able to get cheap:

Otogi:Myth of Demons

&

Kill.Switch (guilty pleasure of mine :) )

I had a copy of KOTOR sitting around, only played twice and with guide book, got tired of looking at it though and just last week swapped it to a friend of mine for some Tenchu game I'll probably never play.

Thanks for all the replies.

Buffy Chaos Bleeds would be a good purchase, as we are watching the show (just finished season 3)

The show is no Babylon 5 but is very good (the humor is better and the problem-of-the-week eps are actually generally good) once we got past season 1. So both of us might get some amusement from the game.

I'm not really a sports guy (although an occasional 4player bout of hockey is cool).

I already checked the release date of SF anniversary, which I see is next month. Guilty Gear X2 #reload was on my list although I forgot about it, although it just makes me want to play Samurai Showdown.

If MK runs nice and smooth online I will pick that up.

The sega recommendations are good - I think Stacey would enjoy JSRF and possibly Shenmue.

Played the first level of Halo 2. Still trying to adjust to the analog sticks. I find myself rarely using the right one - and my analog abilities with my right are definitely weaker than my left.

I had some trouble getting the Xbox set up as my X1 takes 480i from one input and 480p from another one. Luckily I found a tip (bless google!) that says to plug the green component cable into the composite video in...so I got it set to 480p that way. Until I can get the Xbox on the network (another FAR belkin router with WDS bridging is enroute to do this) I can't download the dashboard update. At least games are working OK :D

I'll have to keep an eye out for some cheapass deals. After the PC upgrade and the Xbox, I really need to be quasi respsonsible with the rest of my spare cash. Even though I just got a $2 raise (making up for the $1.50 they cut our pay 2 years back).

Beware! That game takes place during season five, following one of that year's most important events. In case you don't want to be spoiled (and believe me, it's a major one), don't play it until after you've watched that season.

For online fighting games, its all about the 3rd Strike (available in Street Fighter Anniversary; I had no idea you guys hadn't got it yet!) Wipes the floor with everything else.

I'd like to plug OutRun 2 again, because it's still my game of last year, and it's still criminally under-purchased.

Oh, and do keep up. This month's Evil Empire is EA, not Microsoft. ;)

One more thing, related to your last post - there is a button combination (sorry, I don't know what, but a forum search should find it) that makes the current version of the dashboard (you'll have it if you've gone online already) run at 480p the whole time, so you don't have to switch inputs for that.

BEWARE! The game sucks. For the love of god buy the first Buffy game (Just called Buffy the Vampire Slayer) which is better than it's sequel in just about every way.

Listen to Romier on this one. Chaos Bleeds was very poorly done. The original Buffy is a damn good game.

I also recommend Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and the GTA Double Pack. PoP is cheap right off the bat and just watch for deals on the GTA package. I got mine for like $26 a few months after it came out.

No it wouldn't. Get the first Buffy game, it's miles better. My officemate & I have been spending a lot of time with both games this week & Chaos Bleeds make the first game look like the best game ever, it's so poor. Much weaker combat mechanics, weak AI, terrible camera, poorer camera. Go for the first one - it's got a very well done melee combat system that makes the game very fun.

Thanks for the comments about the Buffy game. Must be the first one I remember getting decent reviews.

Oh, the dashboard doesn't run in 480p unless you have downloaded an update from Xbox live. Which I haven't, and I don't think the last person to have my Xbox had it online.

A couple of the recommends we already have (either for GC or PS2). I have Soul Calibur II for GC, although I have yet to play it since I no longer have anyone to play fighting games with (although my fighting game playing friend will be home from california this weekend, so maybe). And Stacey got Prince of Persia for PS2 on the Best Buy Black Friday sale.\

I rented Fable for her, but I had to go to bed to get to class, so she was up playing when I was sleeping - not sure what she thought of it yet.

Router showed up. I was still working on setting it up for bridging when I had to leave for work - hopefully I will get it finished tonight.

You guys will have to let me know some LCVG gamertags so I can find ya for a game of Halo 2 (boy do I suck with the analog sticks, still) or Guilty Gear or something.
