Whiskers
With all the crap that is floating around the internet, I've decided to take a more active role in securing my home network. Let me detail what I have, and perhaps someone out there with a greater knowledge can help me out... Main PC in my den: D-Link ADSL modem from Telus Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless 4 port router ZoneAlarm Firewall Freedom Antivirus through Telus Son's PC upstairs: Linksys WUSB11 Wireless USB network adapter No firewall No Antivirus Xbox: Linksys WET11 Wireless ethernet bridge I guess what I'm looking for is something that can be purhcased which will provide an overall solution to the network above. Is the router able to do the firewall work, or is a seperate software solution the trick? What about AV? Is there a product that can be used on both PC's without having to purchase 2 licenses? Sorry for the ramble...but help is needed! Regards, Stacey
AndyVX
Well, most (if not all) routers have a built-in firewall that functions very well. Combine that with ZoneAlarm, and you're good to go. As for the wireless side of things, not really much you can do besides making sure WEP/WPA is turned on. fishepa
Make sure you change the default SSID that your wireless router uses. That way no one else close to you, ie. neighbors, can use your wireless network.
Robot Monkey
I'm not sure that changing the SSID will prevent people from using your bandwidth -- you'll still pop up on the "available networks" dialog. In addition to enabling encryption, you might also be able to specify that only particular MAC addresses get access, so you would go into the router CP and "okay" your wireless cards/adapters for access. -j
Camp
I just saw a commercial for AOL Broadband. I think that's all you need to be secure. Apparently, it'll keep the dog from peeing in the house and your exterior walls from falling down too. All that and spam control -what more do we really need? That would probably be the best way to do it so other computer can't get to the wireless network.
Robot Monkey
I know of one Netgear router that allows you to grant access by MAC address, but I don't know about other brands. I like the defense in depth approach and like the notion of a firewall, personal firewall, WEP, new SSID, and specifified MAC adress access list. -j
fishepa
Does using WEP add any significant overhead to the network?
