Baiter
Anyone have any experience with having a broadband connection over satellite? I'm just looking for a basic feal of what options, service, and price I should expect.
Chris F
I was led to believe that satellite broadband sucks for gaming due to lots of connection issues, and genaerally piss poor performance.
Whooter
I know that once upon a time that satellite sucked because you had broadband-like downlink, but you were restricted to dial-up speed uplink. I don't know how true that is today. I would say that satellite should probably be a last resort...
MrJames
Since you are connecting to a satellite in orbit your latency will be at least 400ms to well over 1000+.
kelley
My wife's parents had Dish Network's version of satellite internet, man did it suck. I've heard that DirecWay's is much better. As others have said though, forget playing games over it, the ping latency is just too great.
MrJames
You can read through a FAQ on it here.
Baiter
I would say that satellite should probably be a last resort...I'm dealing with a site that can't get dsl or cable. :bh
Romier S
I've heard that DirecWay's is much better. Speaking as someone that supported DirecWay Satellite for 2+ years, it isn't.
kelley
Speaking as someone that supported DirecWay Satellite for 2+ years, it isn't. Well it can't be worse then the Dish's non-standards using POS.
Baiter
Would you guys mind expanding on some of your pains. What exactly makes it crap? :wtf Before you do, I'm dealing with a small office of 2 pc's, the main interest is email and light web browsing. Going back to dial-up, after being spoiled by the world of dsl broadband access has them doing this. :bh So I'd like to go to them and say, satellite is somewhere in the middle, and you should expect it to be painful in these ways...... Or just tell them to suck it up and get dial up.
GreenMonkey
As I understand it, it works good for downloads and stuff, but due to the light-speed delay to and from the satellite, it gives you a very ping connection but decent downloads. Just not good for gaming because there is too much lag.
