Area 51--New FPS

I've been checking out the games due out this spring because I want something fresh to play on X-Box live with my friends. I played the demo for this game on my friends PS2 and it looks pretty sweet...you're in the Area 51 building with all these creepy looking aliens. It's going to have up to 16-person multi-player which will probably rock.

Anyone heard anything else about this game?

I haven't been following it too closely. I did play the Xbox demo from a few months ago, and it was pretty fun. I believe the same demo was also on the PS2 demo disc around the same time.

I also just received the newest Official Playstation Magazine yesterday, and noticed that there's a new playable demo for the game with a different level. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but probably will in the next couple of days. Is this the one you've played, or is it the earlier one?

I didn't much care for the Xbox demo myself - it wasn't bad, but it just didn't grab my attention as being anything special. :(

I don't think the game is going to be revolutionary in terms of advancing the FPS genre, but it appeals to me because it seems like it has a really good storyline. I found the demo pretty enjoyable...which I guess is all you can ask from a demo. Seems like it will be good single player as well as a great multi-player game.

Team X-box has a preview up that gives more info on it if people haven't seen it yet:

Maybe that's why it didn't jump out as something I'd consider buying - I've got so many games to finish that a game has to be revolutionary - or at least fun in a way that doesn't match any games I already own - in order for me to buy it. :)

So has anyone else tried out the new demo in the Playstation mag? I came away REALLY impressed. It's longer than the first one, and blows away the previous demo, IMO. It's much more refined in just about every area: Lighting, AI, weapons, graphics. I love the little touch where your vision blurs when you are hit.

The demo seems to be the beginning of the game. It starts out with a cutscene that's very well done. David Duchovny narrates through most of this (You play as his character).

spoilers:

The new alien gun (BBG) that you find is great! You can bounce your shots off walls a few times as well, to get aliens hiding around corners. You also other weapons that seem to be standard in shooters, such as pistols, sniper rifle and grenades. You can also duel-wield some weapons.

Also, try pressing up on the D-Pad, and you'll find yourself transformed into an alien. In this state, you can throw fireballs, and drain health from others to refill your own!

Search every nook and cranny. There are many syringes (green restore health, orange restore alien meter), and ammo hidden throughout.

I was interested in the game before, but I have to say that I'm really looking forward to it much more, now. Based on this new demo, it looks like it's going to turn out great!

Heavy Liquid, I agree with you on the demo. After playing the demo that came in OPM a few times now, I am very impressed with the weapons, the design of the boards, and the overall gameplay.

The BBG gun should make for some really intresting multi-player. Can you imagine creeping up to a corner or entry way and then all of a sudden seeing a laser sight whizzing right past you?

Game's finally coming this week, I've got it reserved, anyone else?

I was reading up on the multi-player and there's some cool stuff there, the maps all auto-adjust according to the amount of players in the game. When you're on the lower end of players some doors and passages stay blocked until more players join, then they open to give you some room. For game modes there's the standard deathmatch, capture the flag, etc, but the infected mode sounds really cool, one player is randomly selected to start as a mutant and attacks with melee attacks and homing spores to infect the other players, once your infected you switch sides and help hunt the other players.

The reviews for this have been pretty positive so far, so I'm tempted to try it out. If I hear that multiplayer is a blast, then that will really tempt me to get it more. My one concern is that there won't be a large user base for this game, which means I'm stuck playing on Live with a bunch of asshats.

Put an hour or so into this today, my advice would be to rent it first. It's not bad by any means, just really average. Granted I haven't tried the Live features yet but what I've played thus far is just par for the course as far as FPS games go these days.
