JohnEBGood
I've been checking out the games due out this spring because I want something fresh to play on X-Box live with my friends. I played the demo for this game on my friends PS2 and it looks pretty sweet...you're in the Area 51 building with all these creepy looking aliens. It's going to have up to 16-person multi-player which will probably rock. Anyone heard anything else about this game?
heavy liquid
I haven't been following it too closely. I did play the Xbox demo from a few months ago, and it was pretty fun. I believe the same demo was also on the PS2 demo disc around the same time. I also just received the newest Official Playstation Magazine yesterday, and noticed that there's a new playable demo for the game with a different level. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but probably will in the next couple of days. Is this the one you've played, or is it the earlier one? Jordan_E
I'm looking forward to this game. I was getting into the PS2 demo and then it ended and I wanted MORE! Sign of a game I wanna play.
Big Daddy Bling Bling
I played the PS2 demo a few months ago and it seemed reasonably good. It didn't really seem to stack up well when compared to Xbox and PC FPS's, but it's definately one of the better ones I've played on the PS2. Angry the Clown
Is this a remake of sorts? I recall an Area 51 game, I think it was in Arcades and then consoles, about six or seven years ago. Daniel
CaptainRon
heavy liquid, i'm looking to get that ps2 demo, is it in the feb or march OPM?
dogbert
Dan, this is "inspired by" the original arcade game rather than a direct remake, like the NARC game that's coming out. Essentially Midway are just using their IP as a jumping off point for new games.
Angry the Clown
I see. Perhaps for the best since I don't recall the arcade game actually being any good. Daniel
Kain rising
I didn't much care for the Xbox demo myself - it wasn't bad, but it just didn't grab my attention as being anything special.
heavy liquid
heavy liquid, i'm looking to get that ps2 demo, is it in the feb or march OPM? It's the March issue (the issue after the one with the bright yellow cover with the PSPs). I haven't really looked at the magazine, but I did play a bit of Ys, and watched the God of War video. JohnEBGood
I didn't much care for the Xbox demo myself - it wasn't bad, but it just didn't grab my attention as being anything special. I don't think the game is going to be revolutionary in terms of advancing the FPS genre, but it appeals to me because it seems like it has a really good storyline. I found the demo pretty enjoyable...which I guess is all you can ask from a demo. Seems like it will be good single player as well as a great multi-player game. Team X-box has a preview up that gives more info on it if people haven't seen it yet: http://previews.teamxbox.com/xbox/916/Area-51/p1/

Maybe that's why it didn't jump out as something I'd consider buying - I've got so many games to finish that a game has to be revolutionary - or at least fun in a way that doesn't match any games I already own - in order for me to buy it. heavy liquid
So has anyone else tried out the new demo in the Playstation mag? I came away REALLY impressed. It's longer than the first one, and blows away the previous demo, IMO. It's much more refined in just about every area: Lighting, AI, weapons, graphics. I love the little touch where your vision blurs when you are hit. The demo seems to be the beginning of the game. It starts out with a cutscene that's very well done. David Duchovny narrates through most of this (You play as his character). spoilers: The new alien gun (BBG) that you find is great! You can bounce your shots off walls a few times as well, to get aliens hiding around corners. You also other weapons that seem to be standard in shooters, such as pistols, sniper rifle and grenades. You can also duel-wield some weapons. Also, try pressing up on the D-Pad, and you'll find yourself transformed into an alien. In this state, you can throw fireballs, and drain health from others to refill your own! Search every nook and cranny. There are many syringes (green restore health, orange restore alien meter), and ammo hidden throughout. I was interested in the game before, but I have to say that I'm really looking forward to it much more, now. Based on this new demo, it looks like it's going to turn out great! CaptainRon
I finally got the magazine over the weekend so i could check out the demo disc. Heavy liquid, that gun you are talking about is awesome btw. Do you think we'll be able to see other peoples lasers in multiplayer?

Do you think we'll be able to see other peoples lasers in multiplayer? I don't know... it's an interesting question. I could see them doing it either way. I'm guessing that everyone will be able to see the lasers. Online should be a lot of fun..
CaptainRon
for those that don't have the demo, here's a video clip with the BBG gun in it. Kind of reminds me of that one alien gun from timesplitters 2 where it bounced all over the place, cept i dont' think you could see where that one was goign to bounce to. http://media.xbox.ign.com/media/570/570064/vids_1.html
JohnEBGood
Heavy Liquid, I agree with you on the demo. After playing the demo that came in OPM a few times now, I am very impressed with the weapons, the design of the boards, and the overall gameplay. The BBG gun should make for some really intresting multi-player. Can you imagine creeping up to a corner or entry way and then all of a sudden seeing a laser sight whizzing right past you? JohnEBGood
**Bump** Just an update for anyone interested, they have a new interview up with the Area 51 developer http://www.totalvideogames.com/pages/articles/index.php?article_id=7371
Jeff W
Game's finally coming this week, I've got it reserved, anyone else? I was reading up on the multi-player and there's some cool stuff there, the maps all auto-adjust according to the amount of players in the game. When you're on the lower end of players some doors and passages stay blocked until more players join, then they open to give you some room. For game modes there's the standard deathmatch, capture the flag, etc, but the infected mode sounds really cool, one player is randomly selected to start as a mutant and attacks with melee attacks and homing spores to infect the other players, once your infected you switch sides and help hunt the other players. Derrik Draven
The new review of it over ag IGN is pretty complimentary on this game but, it was from a PS2 point of view. I played the demo and was completely underwhelmed. Of course, it was just a demo. Perhaps the real deal is better?
CaptainRon
The infected multiplayer will probably be one of the first things i check out. Collapsing levels could be interesting too. Looks like one of the better fps games on the ps2. This footage has me pretty excited as well. http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=area-pwng
Chris F
The reviews for this have been pretty positive so far, so I'm tempted to try it out. If I hear that multiplayer is a blast, then that will really tempt me to get it more. My one concern is that there won't be a large user base for this game, which means I'm stuck playing on Live with a bunch of asshats. Jeff W
I'll defintely be picking up the xbox version as well as Pariah the week after, I can't resist a good FPS.
CaptainRon
LOL, ruff neck. I was worried about the asshat thing as well, but hopefully the reviews will bode well for the games popularity.
Jeff W
Put an hour or so into this today, my advice would be to rent it first. It's not bad by any means, just really average. Granted I haven't tried the Live features yet but what I've played thus far is just par for the course as far as FPS games go these days.
