Did any of you watch Sataro Iwata's keynote address at GDC? They showed off Nintendogs during the speech, and I must say that I'm very surprised at how intersted I am in it. One of the things that interested me most was how it used the built-in microphone on the DS to train dogs and teach them how to do various tricks. Very cool, especially since you can come up with whatever phrase you like.

With a system like the DS, I'm not going to necessarily buy it because it can play the types of games I've seen before. I want something new and interesting that makes good use of the touch screen, wireless capability, and microphone; this looks like it could be it.

Gamespot has a new preview up of Nintendogs. They are playing the Japanese import version of the game. The game sounds like a blast and it's sure to be a purchase for me when it hits the US (and when I rebuy a DS). You can read the whole preview here .

There is also a few new gameplay videos worth watching. I don't think it's humanly possible to not go "awwww' the minute you see one of those puppies running around. ;)

I've been seeing reports around the Net on various gaming boards that Nintendogs has earned itself a perfect score of 40 from Famitsu magazine. Can anyone confirm this? If it's true, it would make it only the fifth game ever to achieve that.

The best evidence I can find to support this is this. It's not much, but it does include Nintendogs as one of the games that has received a perfect score.

Here's a pic of the actual review.

Dammit, I want a better scan than the only one floating around out there right now. I'd really like to read it, but the Japanese is so blurry it's illegible.

Anyway though, this is really cool news - my interest in this title has definitely increased.

Edit: One of the few bits large enough to read made me chuckle: "Best picks of the week: Konshuu wa kore wo KAE!" (Buy these this week!)

Nintendogs is apparently a great success for Nintendo selling 182,000 units between all three versions of the game in the games first week of sales. This led to a spike in Nintendo DS sales in Japan bringing the total system sales for the week to 96,000 units sold in the last week, compared to 33,000 units moved for the Sony PSP. In fact, the DS outsold every system on the market that week (the week ending the 24th). Here are some numbers for you:

Software

1. PS2 Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song - Square Enix - 217,000 (new)

2. NGC Fire Emblem: Souen no Kiseki - Nintendo - 102,000 (new)

3. NDS Naruto 3 for DS - Tomy - 84,000 (new)

4. NDS nintendogs: Shiba and friends - Nintendo - 83,000 (new)

5. NDS nintendogs: Dachs and friends - Nintendo - 53,000 (new)

6. NDS nintendogs: Chihuahua and friends - Nintendo - 46,000 (new)

7. PS2 Baseball L!ve 2005 - Namco - 44,000 (new)

8. GBA Rockman Zero 4 - Capcom - 38,000 (new)

9. PS2 Gundam: One Year War - Bandai - 30,000 (234,000)

10. PSP Shutokou Battle - Genki - 29,000 (new)

Hardware:

Breed update from Gamestop for the US versions.

Nintendo today announced that the North American versions of the virtual-pet game, set for release on August 22, will include three new breeds of puppies not found in the Japanese versions.

As in Japan, the US Nintendogs will be released in three editions, each with six different breeds of canines for a total of 18. The Chihuahua and Friends edition will feature German shepherds, King Charles spaniels, Yorkshire terriers, Shetland sheepdogs, and the all-new boxer. The Miniature Dachshund and Friends edition will include beagles, pugs, Shih Tzus, and the new golden retriever and Siberian husky breeds. The Labrador Retriever and Friends pack will contain miniature Schnauzers, toy poodles, Pembroke Welsh corgis, Shiba Inus, and miniature Doberman pinschers

Pugs, doxies, and goldens in one pack. Sold!! :tu
