iainl
If Midtown 3 becomes popular after it comes out next month for online play (and perhaps for Moto GP 2 as well) I'm thinking of laying down the big bucks for broadband and signing up. A large part of it is to play with our fellow LCVG people in the US, however. My only experience of online gaming is over modem, where the idea of transatlantic games is just silly; is it practical to play transatlantic games on Live? Or would I just end up playing strangers based here in the UK, which doesn't excite me?
Angry the Clown
I think it's great, especially given the voice chat feature Live offers. Definately a major incentive to my going Live is being able to play with the folks here. In fact I dare say that given the voice feature of Live, I would only really want to play with those I already know from various corners of the globe. The only element making it somewhat impractical is time zones...
reeldeal
i was playing a guy who was in europe (sorry can't be more descriptive) and he had his xbox over there while he was on vacation because he was in an nfl2k3 league. Our game was laggy, very very laggy. he said that it was always like that when he was over there. And i know that nfl2k3 is one of the least bandwith intensive games. Granted it could have just been a crappy connection in his area but i'm not sure if all connections are good enough to get decent speeds with N.A. dogbert
It depends on the title etc, but yes, it's perfectly feasable. I've played a lot of Ghost Recon coop & teamplay, as well as MotoGP, with friends back in the UK. Unfortunately, we can't play PSO... Damn you Microsoft! Camp
Somewhat OT: What are internet fees like in the UK? I've never been across the pond (I will though) so I have no experience with how your systems work over there. Back in the 28.8kbps modem days someone told me online services were slow to spread through the UK because you were charged for each local phone call (while in the US we pay a small monthly service charge + fees for any long distance calls). Obviously, being charged for internet connection + phone connection would suck. Has that changed? What are broadband prices like in the UK? Here in middle America I pay $40 per month (~25 pounds) for about 400kbps cable broadband. I assume you have the same DSL and cable modem options? Sorry to hijack the thread, I'm just curious. I'm still facinated by the Internet's ability to make the world so small.

Over the past few years ISPs here have been quick to ditch the per minute local call dial up charge rate and move onto flatrate yes, which is just the monthly charge with no dial up fee. They took far too long to get the ball rolling on that in my opinion. Flatrate over a dial up will usualy time out after 2hrs with the majority of ISPs allegedly to keep things clear their end. You can dial back in immediately, but it's annoying if you're in the middle of a game, a download or whatever... Quote What are broadband prices like in the UK? A DSL service is charged at around 24.99 a month, which is about the average broadband monthly fee here amongst most ISPs for a 500 something kbps connection speed.
