Well I just sent off the PO for my new work laptop:

Dell Inspiron 9300

17" WUXGA "True Life" Screen

2Ghz Pentium M 760

1GB DDR-2 533Mhz RAM

nVidia GeForce Go 6800 256MB RAM

60GB 7200RPM Ultra ATA

8x Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive

10/100 NIC

56K modem

802.11 b/g Wireless

9-Cell 80WHr Batter

2x Power Cables

Dell Inspiron Backpack case

Bad thing is it won't ship until April 6th, but my salesman is working on getting that rushed.

Which Geforce is it? There are currently 2 different 6800s that differ greatly in performance, and the 6800 ultra will be out by the time you get your laptop.

The 6800 Ultra is out now, but you can only get it in the XPS2 right now and I couldn't get the price into my budget, this sytem was only $1 below my spending allowance.

What work do you need it for? Personally, I don't do anything that I could explain the requirement of a 6800 for, and as shiny as 17" screens are, I'd much rather have a 15" that is less cumbersome to carry about. You've gone down the 'desktop replacement' route, which might be necessary, but I'd personally avoid.

I have a question about that Pentium "M".

I have a 2 year old Dell Inspiron 8200, with a 1.8ghz Pentium M. The new XPS2, that's supposed to be Dell's new monster laptop, can only be upgraded to a 2.2ghz Pentium M.

After 2 years, that's all the more horsepower I can get from a Mobile Pentium? I gotta be missing something here...help me out.

I've heard that the mobile Pentium is more efficient than a regular Pentium. On the Dell forums, guys say to add about 1ghz onto the specs of a mobile, to get comparative specs of a regular Pentium 4.

Really? :wtf How do they come up with that?

I understand that Giga's laptop is going to have a vastly superior graphics card than my lowly Radeon 9000, and there will be much better bus speeds in his laptop, not to mention his memory refresh rate is faster than mine but, it just seems silly that the main cpu isn't much more powerful at all.

In fact, I've read in those Dell forums that the Inspiron could be upgraded to a max of 2.6ghz Pentium M.

What's up here? Surely the latest/greatest Dell laptop would have at least the cpu horsepower of a 2 year old laptop??

What am I missing?

Gig - check out this system. I'm thinking about getting it. Sager

Discountlaptops is great, I got my Sager 9860 from them with no problems and they offer just about the best prices available on Sagers. In fact, the price on mine dropped $80 after it went into production but before it shipped, and they were pretty proactive in sending out a refund check.

Kelley,

Nice system. I got a new Dell Latitude D800 last fall from work (I do the IT budget ;) ) and I love mine. Got the bigass widescreen display and a GeForge FX Go5650. I run Half Life 2 with almost everything maxed out and a high resolution with no problems at all. I meant, I can run work applications with no problem at all. :)

Yeah I spent budget spreadsheets fly on it, atleast that is what I told my boss. Also that the power of the 256MB GeForce 6800 will help my eyes out because of the monitor resolution.

Naah, tremble at the might of my PIII-500 workstation with its 2Mb ATi Rage. Sure, I have to put up with banding on my pie-charts, because I can't get higher than 16-bit colour on my desktop, but it's got it where it counts; I get over a frame a second out of my screensaver.

Lets give an update to the drama.

So I still don't have a laptop. Dell has promised me that I would have it last Friday.....har har har har! I still don't have it, but they were able to locate the unit in Memphis and I'm supposed to get it tomorrow. So far Dell has removed all shipping cost and today they gave me a free Dell 1600n Network Laser Printer/Fax/Scanner.
