"According to a technical support associate contacted by GameSpot, PSP owners who encounter a persistent and aggravating dead-pixel issue should contact SCEA's customer service line (1-800-345-7669) for instructions on how to exchange their unit after a week or two of using the unit. "We will work with you," he assured. The associate said the process would work much like exchanging PlayStation 2s that suffer from the dread "Disc Read Error" problem: Gamers will mail their PSPs in to SCEA and receive units with new screens. The associate was unsure if the customer would receive an all-new unit or their old unit with a new LCD screen."

Is anyone else somewhat freaked out about the PSP discs having an opening with no 'door'? Already I've found bits of lint and other particles inside the cartridge. I'm concerned that something hard, like a grain of sand for example, could get inside and wreak havoc on the media.

I guess the best policy is to keep the games in a very clean place. It's a whole different deal than GBA games where you could toss them almost anywhere without a care.

On the subject of dead pixels:

I guess I will return my PSP to the Playstation Store and try for a better one. I'll have to see when they expect to get more in, maybe the 2nd shipment will have fewer display issues. In truth, I could live with the dead pixels, I don't see them unless the screen is black. But on principle, I should try to get a perfect screen.

Today my brothers PSP's screen beagan to flicker and go out, when it goes the buttons seem to lock with it. My brother is notorious for being hard on electronics, I can't count how many times we were controller-less back in the 16 bit days because he smashed them all in fits of rage, so it could very well be that he's the cause. Still, this has me worried and I'm kind of taking a step back and re-considering getting one. Anyone heard of total screen failure before in their travels on the net?

I'm sure he broke it himself. He called Sony and they are replacing it for him, whole ordeal didn't seem to bad. You call, explain the problem and get a service #, then they email you a form that you print out and send in with the unit, battery, and charger. You pay shipping to them and they pay to send it back. Turn around time once they receive it is supposed to be only something like 4-6 business days.

My package was missing the free Spider-Man 2 movie disc. I called Sony on Friday (the day I bought the PSP, 1 day after launch) and they told me to fax my info along with a reference number and they would ship a disc out to me. I sent the fax that night and by Thursday, Fed Ex was already trying to deliver the disc to me (unfortunately, I kept missing them and after 3 failed attempts, I had to go pick it up from their sub-station). I was very satisfied with their customer support. I was impressed by the Spider-Man 2 movie disc. Other than some occasional ghosting in fast-moving scenes, the video/audio quality was excellent. I don't think I'll be buying any UMD movie discs (I'd rather buy the DVD so I can enjoy it at home and in the mini-van) but it is an impressive demonstration of what the PSP can do. It makes me want to get a larger Memory Stick so I can try converting some DVDs to watch on the PSP.

As far as dead pixels go, my screen has two. Luckily, they are only really visible on a white background (like the loading screen of Wipeout). They're not really dead as in black, they are more shiny. I have never noticed them while playing a game or watching a movie. As it is right now, I wouldn't return the PSP because of them.
