Calvin
Read about it here at The Digital Bits. Dune is one of my all time favorite films,& I can't wait to see what Lynch does with the film.Especially after repeatedly saying that he was all done with it. :tu
Angry the Clown
Good God, Universal Home Video put money into doing something right for a change? This and the planned re-issue of Jaws with its mono track are most welcome. Goodness knows how long Dune will take though. Daniel
iainl
the planned re-issue of Jaws with its mono track What the Fuck??!? When did that get announced? I'm there, already. I'm sick of having to watch my PAL laserdisc because I can't cope with the shitty surround track on my DVD version.
Angry the Clown
What the Fuck??!? When did that get announced? 30th anniversary 2 disc edition, boyo... Full extent of the extras is currently unknown, but the mono track will be there. Fingers crossed they finally port over all of that wonderful laserdisc documentary this time too. We now return to Dune. Wasn't the film amongst Universal's planned HD-DVD launch titles? I'd imagine that will have been struck off the list leaving them to bring Lynch's cut to HD eventually too. That'd be lovely. Coincidentally enough a free copy of Wild at Heart that I was due was delivered today. Daniel
secretvampire
I'm not trying to thread crap at ALL, but I'm surprised to see so many fans of the Lynch version of the Dune story. Despite being a huge fan of David Lynch's work and having read the Dune novel literally about 10-15 times, I absolutely hated this film. I knew going in it couldn't match the book, but I was still surprised at how badly Lynch muffed the atmosphere and "feel" of Dune. So I'm curious, what did you guys like about the film and did you honestly feel it was a faithful representation of Herbert's work?
General Zot
Screw Dune, I can't wait to get a look at the Flash Gordon SE announced in the same column! Now with 20% more 5.1 Queen guitar solos :rock
Romier S
So I'm curious, what did you guys like about the film and did you honestly feel it was a faithful representation of Herbert's work? No, it's not a terribly faithful representation of his work but the reason I enjoy the film so much is because Lynch has such a unique vision of the world. It may not have the "feel" of Dune but the I just love the atmosphere it does have. The extended edition Lynch wanted nothing to do with helped in terms of representing the story better but with this new edition getting a full on director's cut, I'm so there. Just as a side note, the television series Dune was quite a bit more faithful to the source material but I absolutely despised the production in terms of look and feel. JoeyN
Just as a side note, the television series Dune was quite a bit more faithful to the source material but I absolutely despised the production in terms of look and feel. On the other hand i loved it as well as Children of Dune. The first Dune Miniseries was filmed pretty much all on sound stages and thats all i thought the first time i watched it. It wasnt until I got the DVD set and watched it again that I enjoyed it more. Children of Dune was fantastic and i wish they would keep going, but no such luck yet Im looking forward to the David Lynch Extended Edition. Cant wait to see what he does with the film capt
Angry the Clown
So I'm curious, what did you guys like about the film and did you honestly feel it was a faithful representation of Herbert's work? Well, I?d go as far as saying the attraction of the film to me lies predominantly in the creative talent behind making it, namely Lynch, and the choices that were made, unmade and ideas that never really made it to screen in the way he would have liked. It is a deeply, deeply flawed piece of work, but to me at least, it remains a fascinating one so the possibility of seeing a cut closer to Lynch?s overall vision intrigues me so. Someone did tell me this evening that last night in a chat at his website Lynch did in fact deny all knowledge of such a release, so either he was unable to comment at this time, or The Digital Bits is being strung along. I?ll admit it?s been God knows how many years since that website delivered any kind of satisfying scoop. I can't wait to get a look at the Flash Gordon SE announced in the same column! That?s great isn?t it? I?d presume this will be a near carbon copy of the release that?s been out in France for a long time now. It contained a commentary, stills galleries, interviews and so on. Angry the Clown
Sure enough The Digital Bits is ever so slowly retracting its initial statement having jumped the gun somewhat. Honestly I don?t know why the site exists anymore (it?s been bettered by a number of other websites for news and announcements for years now) . Anyway, here?s what Bill Hunt had to say: ?we've followed up with our Universal sources and have now been told that director David Lynch's participation in the Dune: Extended Edition isn't a done deal yet. It IS the reason the title was delayed, but the details about Lynch's involvement are apparently still in discussion Daniel
Peter O
There is more some more confirmation that the rumor was false at LynchNet. There is an excerpt from a chat session with Lynch where he out denies doing a new cut.
Jordan_E
Aw man, that sucks! I have a love/hate relationship with DUNE. The movie itself intrigues me greatly, but it just seems truncated. A Lynch involved recut would have been great, but Lynch is about as quirky as his movies and I doubt it's easy to nail him down!
General Zot
Probably for the best. I don't know how I would have handled a new Dune EE with midgets that talk backwards and Mowa-deeb (sp?!?) sucking on a tank of gaseous spice throughout the film. Lynch is a crazy dude after all, I doubt we could grok his 'orignal' uncut vision.
