Camp
Any chance a field can be added to our profiles for our real names? I'd like to say I can remember everyone's name but the simple fact of the matter is I have difficulty remembering my phone number (yet there's room up there for the old up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start code). Anyway, I'd like to be able to address many of you with your name...I somehow feel rude using your screen name.
Mark E
I think this is a damn good idea, actually. I'd have used my real name but frankly if you ever find me playing a game online it'll be using my devilishly punnish moniker above. Mainly because those rat bastard bioterrorists made my OLD nick slightly un-PC . Use this as your quick reference Camp, I'm Mark Evans . Actually, hell, I'll add it into my sig. I don't like hiding behind a username anyway.
Camp
Thanks for the support, Mark. BTW, before someone asks "Camp" is my name (kind of). I got all kinds of shit form the HTF people because of their stupid "must use your real name" rule. They denied my membership twice before caving in...I still think they 'watch' me
Mark E
Did they really? That's rather amusing actually, since it's not me . Seriously though, I've always assumed your name was Camp. Maybe I'm just more open-minded .
JoeyN
well i can see why they want real names at HTF for the simple fact there are industry people on there and so forth. Everyone knows my name anyway :-) capt
kelley
the problem with forcing people to use realnames is 1) you must manually approve every new membership 2) how do you know that the name is really their real one and 3) most gamers go by there handles anyways, even in real life. plus i don't feel like reprogramming phpBB
Whooter
plus i don't feel like reprogramming phpBB Puss.
Mark E
3) most gamers go by there handles anyways, even in real life. Is that really true? Should I call Romier Futurevoid when I meet him? I can't see Brian asking anybody to call him Dogbert either .
JoeyN
Actually except for HTF and here i never use my real name in online stuff. When i used to be into CCG's, when i went to tournaments people still called me capt or DS as we were so used to calling each other by our online names. capt
Mark E
Really? That... boggles my mind. I suppose I don't game in person enough outside of my boardgame crew . I can't imagine anybody ever calling me Pharmboy. Well, I could, but I'd be pissed since it's a throwaway name anyway .
kelley
ok i misunderstood what you where wanting. I'll look into doing it after the rest of the site is up. Currently I just don't have the time.
Robot Monkey
Should I call Romier Futurevoid when I meet him? Don't be silly. I have it on good authority that he prefers "Your Grace" or "El Guapo". More on point, isn't the name thing easier addressed by signing off your posts with your name? For example: -j
Mark E
Yes, yes it is. That's why my sig now reflects that
Robot Monkey
And how typical is it that the first solution we thought of was modifying the phpBB code/editing fields instead of just adding our real names to our posts or sigs? -j
Angry the Clown
Do I have to put a name like HinkleFinkleDinkleDo1045 in my sig?

Mark E
One of my all-time favorite books, dammit. I've used that nick before too .
potempkin
I'll chime in just to say Snow Crash is one of my all time favs as well. Maybe the Wachowski bros. should take a look at that property after their Matrix trilogy concludes this year. We can dream, can't we?
Mark E
I firmly believe that Snow Crash should remain in the realm of the paperback. Lord of the Rings is the only truly exceptional book-to-movie translation I can think of. Snow Crash is too good to leave anything out of, and it would lack Stephenson's flair for description. Can you imagine trying to explain some of those concepts in a movie? Snow Crash has some pretty intelligent conversation going on there and I think it'd be so dumbed down in a movie to be depressing .
Orpheus
I think much of Snowcrash would be lost in translation to the big screen. Better to just leave it as is, in my mind. Speaking of which, has anyone heard anything about Stephenson's new book, Quicksilver? Seems to be keep getting pushed back (sounds like alot of games I'm waiting for). Mark E
Not to further hi-jack this thread, but how are Stephenson's other books anyway? I haven't read any except Snow Crash, but am certainly interested. Just haven't made the effort.
Camp
...and how does Snowcrash compare to Gibson's Neuromancer? I've always intended to read Snowcrash as people tell me I'd love it but I have a backlog of about 8 books right now.
Robot Monkey
I like both novels very much, but there are certain aspects that give Snow Crash the edge, IMHO. Stephenson writes with more humor and more action. He isn't above a gag (there's even a pun apparently disguised as a typo early in the book) and clearly loves an action scene. Also, the characters in Snow Crash seem to have more depth and the world he creates seems to have more soul. Hiro and Y.T. (both characters in Snow Crash) seem like people with lives and motivation; too often Gibson's characters seem like they're gritty and driven -- and that's it. Keep in mind that I'm not slamming Gibson (heck, I just finished re-reading my autographed copy of All Tomorrow's Parties). It's just that, for me, Snow Crash is a much wilder -- and more fun -- ride. -j
