This generation is coming to a close. Game releases are about to get more shallow leading into this next year. So although there may be some gems on the way (Jade Empire), most of the best will likely be extensions to existant franchises anyway.

I had a list of 38 games (All of IGN's 9+ rated games), but polls are limited to 10 options. I decided to cut out sports, racing, and platformers. Of the remaining titles, I eliminated the most obscure titles. So no Madden, Otogi, or Jak games. I'm sure some of you will abstain from voting because you love Panzer Dragoon, Beyond Good and Evil, or KOTOR. I had to cut somewhere. I think this is a pretty damn good list, all things considered.

Note that most all of these are franchises, so vote based on your favorite game in the franchise if that makes it easier for you.

I voted GTA. I have played the living hell out of III and VC. i have only put a few hours iunto SA, but that will go up a lot once I get the X-box version. SA is a perfect "summer" game. :)

The only other series I would of voted for is Splinter Cell. Every game has been an improvement in the Single Player and then there is the Multiplayer.....which is fan-friggin-tastic.

I assume you are just including console games in this poll? The absense of Half-Life 2 pains me. :) Without question it is my favorite overall game in the last few years.

If I had to pick a franchise from this console generation it would be a tossup between Halo, Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six games. I've put alot of hours into all the games in those series.

I voted Devil May Cry. I would like to say Final Fantasy, but X-2 didn't interest me much... and FFX, although the story, characters, etc was really good, the difficulty was pathetically easy (and this is from a guy that doesn't level up, ever, unless absolutely necessary).

Devil May Cry was the first action/adventure type game I had an interest in since the SNES days. It helps that it was actually difficult. It got me playing some games again that aren't RPGs or strategy games.

DMC2 I didn't even play because of the reviews and feedback - I decided my time would be better spent playing DMC1 again. I have DMC3 and although I haven't had time to play much of it, I liked what I saw so far.

The only other action/adventure genre game I liked this generation was Maximo (the first one).

I chose GTA. Like Dean, I played a ton of III/VC and plan to play SA when it comes to the PC. With VC, I felt they really absolutely nailed having a truely immersive game environment. From the places, music, cars, and people, it really was like being in an 80's mafia movie.

I selected Metroid Prime. The first game was an amazing achievement and still stands as my favorite game of this generation. The sequel offered up a very similar play experience, but added some cool new ideas to the series, such as the use of Light and Dark World for puzzle solving.

In fact, I wouldn't even limit this option to the GameCube games. Nintendo has been very good to Metroid fans this generation with the two Cube games and two excellent titles on the GBA, Metroid Fussion and Metroid Zero Mission. I really hope that the trend continues into the next generation.

Had it been available, my second choice would have been Ratchet and Clank. Great platformer series with excellent action. Keith, why did you have to descriminate against platformers anyway?

Devil May Cry wouldn't get my vote because of the awful 2nd game. Though I loved the 1st one,& will get the 3rd someday.

I have played every selection there with the exception of the Final Fantasy games.Do you have to even ask what I voted for?

Between the single player story, online play, and many hours wasted doing LAN play, there is no other choice but Halo :D

I voted for GTA, as it's both the best of the available options, and a close front-runner (just being pipped by WipEout) to best of last-gen, too.

On a 'pick your own' list, I'd probably go for Super Monkey Ball, though. The original is certainly one of my most played games this-gen, and I have to say I enjoyed my time there more than the slow, slow pace of GTA as well.

I voted for Zelda since I was a big fan of Wind Waker.... and the new one looks incredible.

Surprisingly though, I would say MotoGP for XBox is tops this generation for me. I probably haven't played any game more than either of the first two games, and it was a much much longer love afair than most games like ESPN NHL, Pandora Tomorrow, or Metroid Prime. For me, it's simply one of the best racing games out there, and I likes my racing games.

I can't wait till MGP3 is out.

For me it went purely to which games I enjoyed the most and those were the Metroid Prime games.

Glen

Reading this gave me the urge to finally open and play Metroid Prime. Thank you. :tu

The controls were an adjustment having to hold R to look around. Especially since the c button isn't used which is how SMS worked if I remember correctly. That said, I'm really enjoying the game so far. It's been one of those "I'll play a little longer" and next thing you know it's been an hour or two.

Halo got my vote, because between the time of Doom I & II until Halo, I had kind of burned out on the genre and wasn't really looking at Halo as a system-seller (the promise of Morrowind, Unreal Championship and KOTOR is what did it for me pre-launch.)

Now, thanks to Halo, FPS is a very strong part of my current gaming library.
