Carlucci
Here is yet another FPS featuring a Vampire protaganist in the Old West! Oh wait, that is different, isn't it? I played through the OXM demo a few times last night, and this game is quickly moving up my "must play" list. The weapons from the demo are awesome. There's a "six shooter" style handgun that you can use to squeeze off single shots, or hold down the trigger to "fan" the hammer for rapid fire. There's also a crossbow with a time delay grenade projectile. You also have the choice between doing good and evil. In the demo, you come across a woman who was bitten by a vampire. You have the choice of finishing her off, or saving her. Depending on your choice, you are rewarded with a different level-up that you can use later. Your choice also alters the level boss you will face. I'm not sure if the game narrative branches off based on your choices, but even if it doesn't, the levels will have instant replay value because of this feature. The demo looked and played great. If this game makes the May 3rd ship date I've seen on a few sites, and goes up against Pariah, it's going to be a tough call. Check out the trailer here, and some video of the multiplayer here. dogbert
Has this been picked up by a publisher yet? Sega/Sammy dropped it.
Romier S
Nothing announced as of yet since High Moon Studios broke off from Sega/Sammy. That May 2005 release date isn't happening either, at least according to this report: http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/darkwatch/news_6119857.html I'd expect a fall release at this point given that we haven't even heard a publisher announcement yet. (anyone want to bet that Majesco picks it up? )
Carlucci
I'm actually relieved that it's going to wait until fall or later for release, so it won't compete as much with Pariah/Halo2 revamped for my attention. There is apparently a bug in the code that makes the game more difficult to load. This is above and beyond the regular problems with getting the OXM disc to load. To get the demo to load, you have to remove your Xbox live cable, boot the console without a game, and then set your clock to any date before March 15, 2005. Yesterday, I couldn't get it to load on my downstairs Xbox, but I just tried today after setting the date and it worked great. It will sit on the "Renderware" screen for a few minutes, so be patient. The surround and bass effects are off the charts! There is an almost 3D quality to the graphics that is terrific. Also, be sure to take note that there are 2 playable levels on the disc, AND an extra cool trailer that is different from the online versions I have seen. In my excitement yesterday, I totally overlooked the train level. It starts off like a rail-shooter, until you realize you can control where the horse goes. Then it's through the train on foot, and you finish it off with a double-barreled Gatlin gun against an onslaught of undead. This demo is money! I know i'm pimping it hard, but please try it and let me know what you think. Carlos.
dogbert
set your clock to any date before March 15, 2005. Yay for developer date locked demos sneaking onto cover disks. That's sloppy.
Carlucci
from the developer Q&A (may need to register) we expect to announce Darkwatch?s publisher at or just prior to E3 also, on whether your choices affect the game path: Things change in the world as you make your choices, and this culminates as a big decision which dramatically changes the story. Once you make that choice things will never be the same. Carlos.
dogbert
Capcom's been announced as the publisher.
Camp
How did that come about? Wasn't this a Sammy property?
dogbert
Sammy/Sega dropped the game & the studio a while back, that's why it's been in limbo.
Carlucci
The trailer on IGN.com has been updated to show an August, 2005 release date. Carlos.
Derrik Draven
I haven't seen any Xbox video yet. All I've seen has been PS2 stuff. I'm really looking forward to this game but, I sure would like to see how it runs on the Xbox since, I wasn't all that impressed with the PS2 videos. They were cool but, I kept thinking that they'd be alot better with a bit more horsepower behind them. Any Xbox vids anywhere?
Carlucci
Well, there's the Xbox playable demo on last month's OXM disk. It was fantastic. I have never played a short demo more than a few times, but I played the 2 levels of this one over and over. Very smooth. I guess there is either assisted aiming or a very large hitbox for headshots, because you can pull them off quite easily and they are very satisfying. there's 10 pages of video here, in the xbox section of IGN. (I'm guessing they are specific to the xbox) http://media.xbox.ign.com/media/627/627257/vids_1.html These include some shots of multiplayer action, which looks extremely good. Doing the double jump and then raining bullets down on enemies as you float down to the ground will be the shit! Carlos.
Derrik Draven
I've been a subscriber to OXM since the 1st issue. Have every demo disc... EXCEPT THAT ONE!!!! I never got that issue. Just didn't show up. Wrote them 3 times. Answered me once. Said they didn't consider it late, yet. Nice how they don't have a phone number, that I can find, to actually talk/complain to a living human being. Hopfully I can get the issue resolved since that Darkwatch demo was something I was really looking forward to.
Carlucci
Bummer about the OXM demo disk, Derrick. Hope it finally shows up for you. Darkwatch.org has a link to a new magazine called "Hardcore gamer", which features a cover story on Darkwatch. Here's a link to a vid showing Xbox Live play: Right Click, Save As I got this from the http://www.darkwatch.org site. I don't think I've seen this same footage on IGN. Carlos. Carlucci
Yet another trailer here. This one shows more of the female lead character. Looks really good. Also, a vid of the PS2 co-op play here. Choose "official Movie 3". Man, my expectations are high for this game. Please don't let it suck. Carlos. Derrik Draven
Yeah, me too. Did you play the latest demo on the newest OXM disc? I got this one! Kinda tough! Frame rate sure is smooth and, from what I could see, I really like the weapons, their animations, and the sounds: nice and meaty. The little Eastwood-ish "ching" that you hear with each footstep, is definitely cool. Always wanted a pair of boots with spurs.
Carlucci
Oh no! I let my OXM subscription lapse. I don't think I'm getting this issue, unless I buy it on the newsstand. I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm getting it one way or another, because I've got to try out the multiplayer. If it's good, it will definitely clinch a purchase from me. Carlos. AnthonyVolpe
I was never able to get the OXM demo to work. However I've seen enough of this game that it's on my "to get" list. Unfortunately it's a lot lower on the list than "food" and "a full-time job."
Carlucci
I got it! The SP level is short and sweet. The enemy seem much more intelligent, ducking and rolling for cover. They are harder to kill too. Sniper rifle kills are very satisfying. I had to set the sensitivity down to 3 to keep from being a total spaz. Shotgun is very powerful from much larger distances than Halo's shotty. Graphics and lighting effects are very pretty. Only got to play multiplayer for a few rounds before my wife started rolling her eyes, but I liked it. The only mode available on the demo is Deathmatch, with two maps available. 1 map is a good CQB map in a western town. Lots of stairs to climb in the buildings, and some balconies and windows to snipe from. Other map is an open canyon, with bridges and tunnels to run around in. There are warp portals in several places to help you get around. It's good deathmatch fun. Nothing too groundbreaking. The double jump and floating is very cool, especially when you float down while firing on an enemy who doesn't see you coming. I'm not sure the opposing character animations are in-synch, because a few times it looked like the guy who killed me was facing away from me. I got in a 6-player game and there was no discernable lag, unless the animations thing is actually lag. I definitely want to put in more time online with this, so I'll probably get online this weekend for a good bit. Hint: if you're used to playing Halo 2, set the controller to the "Chieftain" setting, as it is most like Halo's (is that a nod to the Master Chief?) Carlos. Carlucci
I liked the demo gameplay and multiplayer enough to make this a must-buy, which may end up being my last for the xbox, unless RS3:Lockdown is totally awesome. When I pre-ordered at Gamestop just now, I got a slick-looking Darkwatch comic book for free. Anyone else definitely buying this? Carlos. Romier S
Anyone else definitely buying this? Not a definite Carlos, but I'm definitely considering it. I was left somewhat "blah" with the single player game, but the mutliplayer hit the spot. I really enjoyed the maps and the fast paced gun play. If I do give it a buy, I'll throw up a post. Though with September shaping up to a very busy month of game buying, I may wait on a price drop.
General Zot
What else is on your list in Sept bud? Other than Shadow of the Colossus, I have no idea what is streeting next month.
Romier S
Oh boy, where to start... NHL2k6 Scooby Doo Unmasked (for the wife) Tecmo Classic Arcade Burnout Revenge Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks Ninja Gaiden Black Indigo Prophecy Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes X-men Legends II: Rise of the Apocalypse Midway Arcade Treasures 3 Ultimate Spiderman The Suffering Ties That Bind Capcom Classics Collection FarCry Instincts Shadow of the Colossus We Love Katamari Sly 3 Not everyone one of those is an immediate purchase, but I'll be picking up more than half of them as of right now. (Shadow of the Colossus, Indigo Prophecy, X-men II for online coop, and Burnout Revenge are 100% definites). I don't see Darkwatch getting much play time. Carlucci
I was left somewhat "blah" with the single player game, but the mutliplayer hit the spot. I really enjoyed the maps and the fast paced gun play. I'm not really buying Darkwatch for the multiplayer, because it doesn't seem like many from here will be gettting it, and all of my regular gaming chums have declined to purchase. With Darkwatch single-player, I'm really, REALLY hoping for a FPS with a good narrative combined with intense action--something that I haven't seen since Halo 1. I had high hopes for Pariah, but the reviews said the story was lacking, so I never played it. Carlos.
