Keen Sandals: The Thread

I just got a pair this weekend and love them. I kept hassling/inviting friends every couple of minutes to marvel at them. So I put them in my avatar.

I think it's working, I'm marveling right now. I like the red ones. Mine are gray-green.

Probably the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned.

I must've spent 30 minutes debating between the green ones and the red ones. Very happy with the red ones.

Man, these are comfy!

But please excuse me, I'm sure I'm taking marvelling time away from you. Feel free to marvel away. In fact, you can leave your browser open to this page so you can marvel at the sandals even when I'm not on the forum.

Wow, a thread all about Keens! How nice.

I've noticed over the past year that they seem to be getting more popular, I see them at more stores, Nordstrom carries them, as do a few small shoe stores around here.

For good reason, they rock. I've worn sandals almost exclusively for the last 7 years because my feet overheat in most shoes (leather? forget it). I have a pair of Rockport boots that I wear in inclement weather, they are fabric, so they breathe pretty well, but even so my feet bake indoors when I wear them.

When I saw Keens I knew they were for me, a perfect combination of shoe and sandal. The toes are covered like shoes, but the sides and back are open for comfort and breathability.

They seem to be well made too, I don't see any signs of wear (other than normal wear on the sole) or defect after a year of almost daily usage. I want another pair just to have a different color.

Keen says you can just chuck them in the washing machine with a little detergent to clean them. The guy at REI said he had his for about a year and wears them almost everyday for biking/hiking/kayaking/walking around and they look brand new.

Out of curiosity, why are you looking to get a new pair? Has the foam in the insole crushed down too much? Or is madder brown just too sexy to pass up?

The madder brown is nice. I had been planning on black...but that brown is madder than hell.

Sorry. I glanced downward and became momentarily mesmerized by my sandals, missing your comment.

I originally wanted leather ones like yours, but the REI guy said that the leather insoles can feel a little slippery or slimy when you sweat or spend time in water. He said it was pretty minor, but then he mentioned that he was replacing them with the synthetic versions this year. Plus, the leather ones don't come in sexy Madder Brown. That Angry Green synthetic looked good, though.

So I opened this thread, and I was thinking, "Man these guys are nuts, a whole thread about someone's sandals, I can't believe I'm reading it".

Then I got thinking, "You know, I'm going to need a new pair of sandals this year".

Then I found myself checking the MEC website to see if they carried them. They do.

You guys should get a commission from the Keen people.

They'd have to be a helluva shoe to outdo my Docs. I love them. Most comfortable shoe I can think of. I beat the crap out of mine for 5 years and never had an issue. I bought yet another pair a year ago. Then again I can't do anything heavy like mountain biking and such in them so this is where the Keens would do well.

Docs are nice and durable, but these sandals or a whole new world of comfort. For me at least.

Oh, BTW, "madder brown" in this context probably refers a southwest Asian perennial plant. The dye obtained from its roots can give a medium to strong red or reddish orange color. Dunno where the "brown" part comes into play. Shouldn't it be Madder Red?

Perhaps it refers to your poo the day after consuming immense quantities of beer and 5-alarm wings.

  • 3 weeks later...
I just got the flyer for that sale and am embittered. Although ... maybe I should pick up another pair. Or stock up on Nalgene bottles. Or by a doggie sleeping bag. It never ends.

I walked in got a pair of Keens and walked back out.. I knew better than to walk around the rest of the store. It's much too easy to spend money in an REI. :)
