ChoiceStriker
I'm planning on reselling my old laptop now that I have a newer model. I'll most likely put it on eBay. But before I do that, I wanted to seek out advice on what precautions I should take before selling it. What steps can I take to ensure that the buyer has no possibility of exploiting any sensitive information? I had looked at disk-wiping utilities like KillDisk, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any opinions or experience with such a utility. Also, I was curious about whether I can legally resell some software with the computer. I have a Windows XP Home CD that I no longer have a use for, but is it legal to resell such a thing to another user? The other software would just be things like driver CDs and Dell system CDs - I don't foresee as much of an issue there, but I want to be on the safe side. Thanks! Ryan FB
Something like KillDisk, or any other similar utility that overwrites the drive multiple times, should be fine (as long as you're not selling your laptop to the DOD/NSA ). As long as you don't retain the Windows license by leaving it installed on another computer, there should be no issues with transferring it to another user.
