It does seem an odd choice, but this quote is revealing:

Arad said that director Matthew Vaughn and the filmmakers were seeking to avoid a British actor to play Beast when Grammer read for the part. "We've been looking around for actors that are American," he said. "We didn't want to resort to ... if someone is intelligent, [he] has to sound like a Brit. ... [Grammer] has this delivery and the voice. You close your eyes, and you hear Hank McCoy.
(from the linked article above)

I am not a comic geek but I do know the Beast is supposed to be an educated and articulate character. In that context, Grammar does make sense in a way, especially if the filmmakers are trying to get away from the "brit-sounding = smart" stereotype that Hollywood is so fond of.

Still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't scratch my head when I first heard the announcement.

Also Maggie Grace (ABC's Lost) is rumored to be Kitty Pride/shadowcat

capt

I hope not. Now, if you're gonna take someone from Lost, I really picture someone more like Evangeline Lilly in that role. Has a more wholesome, girl next door aura to her than Maggie Grace's snotty blonde that seems more inline with Kat from the comics....

You would dare to suggest this is not actually true, Dave?

Heh, as my personal interaction with Brits is rather limited (and consists chiefly of LCVG members) I am willing to concede that all British-sounding people are, in fact, smart. But even my lowly American education taught me that that doesn't mean that all smart people are British-sounding, and that's the stereotype I was railing against. :D

(And they say the art of diplomacy is dead in the States...)

Looks like Vaughn is now OFF of Xmen 3 due to personal reasons. Chud.com has the report on thier main page:

http://www.chud.com/

When I interviewed Matthew Vaughn for his directorial debut, Layer Cake, he was visibly jazzed about his next project, X-Men 3. So I can only imagine that his decision to leave that film - a decision that Aint It Cool News has confirmed - must have been tough.

”This is not a case of creative differences,” Avi Arad said to Moriarty. “This is a personal decision by Matthew, and I can tell you that he is heartbroken. He loved this material, and he wanted to make this film.”

I hope that whatever personal issues Matthew had to deal with get positively resolved, but in the meantime there's a major league movie just sitting there. And it's got a release date and everything all attached - what next?

Well, Marvel tells AICN that not only is pre-production steaming along - they plan to announce casting for Angel very soon - but that they have a new director lined up, apparently someone previously connected to the film.

My first reaction is the same as Moriarty's - Joss Whedon? It's interesting, to say the least. But Whedon seemed unwilling to do the film because he couldn't write the script - now it seems like whoever directs it will be doing little more than sheparding Vaughn's vision into reality, as they are keeping the casting and the script that is in place now.

It will be interesting to see if Fox flinches and moves X3 away from its impending release. And I certainly hope that all of this is included on the DVD - it'll certainly beat another presentation of wire frame CG models and endless ass kissing that you get on most DVDs these days.

Says it's because Vaughn decided he didn't want to relocate his family to LA/Vancouver for a year. Understandable...

Yeah it is. Still suprising considering how excited Vaughn seemed to be working on the movie. There are rumors that Fox is once again courting Joss Whedon to take over but given he is still deep "in the trenches" so to speak on Serenity, I don't see that happening.

According to AICN, the new director may just end up being...Brett Ratner. While that name may irk some, I guess I don't feel he is that bad of an option. I think it is more important that they have a strong story, which from what is also in the latest report sounds a bit risky.

Based on Moriarty's hints, they are killing three characters, having one lose his/her powers, and there's a sex scene. He does call the story ideas controversial, but he didn't sound to me like he was bashing it.

I'm glad Vaughn has gone as I don't see him as a filmmaker with any unique individual vision whatsoever... which sadly is what I can say for Ratner too so I wouldn't be pleased if it was him. Why Fox can't stop being so damn childish, wait for Singer to finish Superman and let him finish what he began is beyond me.

Dean speaks truth, albeit somewhat cynically :).

I think the other factor is that they have the cast lined up and ready to go. If they push production back a year there's no guarantee that they would be able to bring everyone back. I'm a little surprised to be finding the online sentiment is that that would be a good thing, though I think for the most part the actors have done fine.

Ah but do they have the cast though? I hadn't heard of all the previous cast members yet signing on for number three (those who were not already contracted for a third at least). I’m a sucker for consistency with this sort of thing. Fox may well rush into sorting this mess out, but in doing so they may end up with a backlash from both original cast and fans alike.

Ratner is confirmed and it looks like cast is re-signed:

Brett Ratner to Direct X-Men 3

Source: Variety June 6, 2005

20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment set Brett Ratner on Friday night to replace Matthew Vaughn as the director of X-Men 3, reports Variety. Shooting will start in August for a Memorial Day weekend 2006 opening date.

A comic book enthusiast, Ratner was among the helmers considered to direct the first X-Men. The job went to Bryan Singer instead. Ratner then spent a full year developing Superman Returns, the film that ultimately prompted Singer to drop out of directing "X3."

The trade adds that the "X3" budget is locked, and Fox and Marvel brass consider the script by Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg to be at least as strong as that of the first two installments. The original returning stars have been signed, and the cast is bolstered by Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut and Lost star Maggie Grace as Kitty Pryde (aka Shadowcat).

Fox's hiring of Ratner also means that Rush Hour 3 will most certainly miss New Line's projected fall start and summer 2006 release dates. Ratner directed the first two films in that series and seemed certain to make the third, but Chris Tucker's unwillingness to sign his $20 million deal in timely fashion scotched those plans.

That's too bad. He was listed on IMDB when I checked a few weeks back, so I just assumed he was optioned. I know these movies end up being all about Wolverine somehow, but he was one of the few supporting characters that interested me.

I was fine with Halle Berry and James Marsden disappearing. Their characters always bored me, almost as much as their acting in the roles did.

Now I just need them to give Collusus more than 30 seconds of screentime and I might be onboard.

Nope, Colossus is not one of the new characters being focused on. A completely idiotic move IMHO considering the setup is right there in X2. Of course, Gambit is in.

The train wreck analogy is spot on too. The more I read about it, the less I care about seeing it.
