So, a lot of nerd-woodies have been sprung over the specs announced for the forthcoming consoles, but hardware is only useful if it's in service of worthwhile software.

Based on the track records of the big three competitors, which one is likely to give us the most fun games?

I voted PS3, but that's based on my tastes only. This is really a tough poll since people have different definitions of what makes a game 'fun.'

For instance, I'm not a big FPS or racing guy, and I love RPGs and platformers. That takes 360 from the top of my list right there.

I'm exactlly the opposite. I love FPS games and racing games to death. Cant get enough of em. I cant stand japaneese style RPG's and platforming games with tons of jumping puzzles and the like. This makes the 360 the clear choice for me.

NES, SNES and N64 games = Revolution wins.

SNES games rule.

I'll take Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy IV/VI, Dragon Warrior IV, etc over most modern games. For consoles Super Mario World is waay better than any of the 3d platformers IMO (I never really dug any 3D platformers except Maximo). Toss in Star Fox 64 (which I was almost considering buying an N64 again for) and that's a lineup. :D

Here's to hoping for Square-Enix support for the Revolution downloads.

If there is very little 3rd party support of downloads (I sure hope this doesn't happen), then I would vote PS3. Gotta have my RPGs and Devil May Cry. :D

I wish Microsoft or Nintendo would acquire some mega Square-Enix & Namco support for RPGs. Then I wouldn't have to buy an uber-expensive PS3.

Grand Theft Auto series. Sure it comes to the 360, but I want to play them asap, which means not waiting for the 360 port.

My favorite games are the platformers, like Sly Cooper and such. PS2 won me with those this generation, so I'm going to side with history and vote PS3 doing the same in the next generation.

That may be all well & good - but what about the New games for said systems? If I feel like playing NES,SNES & N64 games - I can play them on the systems they are originally for.

IMHO,backwards compability = convenience. That is all.

(and that isn't a bad thing...)

Right now, with what we know...from my preferences, I'd say the 360. FPS are my favorite genre at the moment. But,I'll own all three & I'm 100% positive that each will have enough unique games to make it worthwhile. :tu

I am with you on the convenience issue. Too many consoles already hooked up.

Here's some examples...

I hope for actual good emulation of FFVI, for example. The PSX version emulation sucks with long load times, but the SNES version has iffily translated dialogue and gameplay changes (Ditto with FFIV). I'd love to see the new translation emulated properly. Neither version is without flaw.

Maybe an official Enix release of Dragon Warrior V & VI would be possible...fan translations exist for emulators but I've never gotten around to playing them on my PC. I'd snap up a console version and play it in a hearbeat. Would Square release a version that required no physical $ investment? No print runs of discs, etc? Seems like a good business model for releasing old stuff.

To me, Dragon Quest/Warrior V & VI would be new games - we've never seen a legit console release here, ever.

The best NEW game lineup? IMO Nobody yet. I have only seen a few games of interest at this point. That Enchant Arms game for 360 and Devil May Cry 4 for PS3. But DMC4 could suck like DMC2, ditto for Enchant Arms.

The only side with a lot of games shown at all is the Xbox360..but I don't care about the bazillion FPS and racing games that they've shown the least bit. I've got a computer to play FPS if I want -with an MX1000 laser mouse.

So far it's more of the same, except I may actually buy a launch Revolution - because the emulated oldschool games will actually give me some games to actually play. My wife (then gf) wanted the PS2 on launch and I split it 50/50 with her. I had ONE game - Tekken Tag - for over a year. The rest of the time I bought/played PS1 games
