dogbert
So I'm off to Cancun for five days in a little under four weeks. This will be the first time my wife or I have visited Mexico, though we're going with a couple of friends who have. The vacation's all booked, we're staying at an all inclusive resort that's got a good reputation. Any tips/advice? So far, the only definite trip thing we want to do is the Mayan ruins as that's a sight I've always wanted to see.
Josh
My first recommendation is already out the door since you're staying in an all-inclusive. You'll be missing out on some great local food. Do try to get out and sample some. I never buy into AI's for that reason alone. I've never been to Cancun, but have been to Cabo and the Caribbean. My main advice: - Bring a shit-ton of sunblock. Do not think that clouds or a white t-shirt will protect you. - Go on a catamaran / snorkeling cruise. Always a blast. - Relax. Don't schedule something for every day. Give yourself a couple "whatever" days.
PoisonJam
I would say to try to prepare yourself for the heat but you live in Texas now so that won't be a big deal. My wife and I honeymooned in the Bahamas in July (many years ago) and coming from CT where we only get a few super-hot days of 90+ degrees per year, the heat was something we had a tough time adjusting to. That won't apply to you, though. I was also going to suggest renting "The Real Cancun" as a vacation primer, but I like you too much for that, Brian. Have fun, drink plenty of liquids (non-alcoholic if you have to in a pinch) and take lots of pics!
Whooter
Make sure those liquids are bottled. No tap water. No ice in your drinks...

dogbert
Well warned on the water & sun. I'm a pasty Scotsman so there'll be plenty of sunblock taken with us.
Carlucci
I read somewhere that even though tips are included in the All Inclusives, you can get EXTRA exceptional service by tipping them anyway. (doesn't have to be a whole lot). My wife and I are going to Puerto Vallarta at the end of July with the free tix I won. Her sister has a timeshare package, so we're getting the hotel for a steal. Make sure those liquids are bottled. No tap water. No ice in your drinks... Joel, what about frozen drinks? They have ice in them, so are they just as dangerous? This could be a very serious matter as my wife loves frozen alcoholic beverages. Carlos.

Solitice
Bring a few bucks with you on the plane so you have something to tip the porters when you exit the airport. They are VERY aggressive about carrying your bags for you so it much easier to just pony up the few bucks then try to avoid them. None of them will have change for a 20 either "Best day" is really good to use for the day trips if you want to go somewhere. Its a smaller group so you learn a lot more and things move along faster. I highly recommend seeing Chichen Itza, its absolutely amazing. You see a lot of the real Mexico on the way there and back too, its quite interesting to see. Check out the info here The Xcaret one is cool too Have fun! I can't wait to go back
Bruce B
Been to Cancun twice in the past two years. Can I ask which all inclusive youre staying at? The most interesting culture shock is the ability to walk through a shopping mall with a beer in your hand. Also its quite funny when we walked into a store and the security guard had shots of tequila he was offering. There are alot of really fun night clubs to go to. Also, there is usually an extremely long line going through customs. Be prepared to spend at least an hour to get through depending on when you arrive. We brought with us as a carry on a bucket of frozen margaritas and made alot of friends handing out free margaritas to others in the customs lines. We have stayed at the same all inclusive both times(Blue Bay Getaway) and have really enjoyed it. Plus the ladies can go topless all around the resort. :rock
Ryan FB
Be prepared to have everybody and their brother pitching you timeshare meetings/incentives/whatnot. When I went there, it seemed almost inescapable.
dogbert
Can I ask which all inclusive youre staying at? Melia Turquesa. It's gotten good reviews, though supposedly it's hard to get chairs by the pool.
Bruce B
Melia Turquesa. It's gotten good reviews, though supposedly it's hard to get chairs by the pool. When you wake up the first thing you should do is go down to the pool and lay your towels and sunscreen on the chairs, even if you wont be at poolside for a few hours. dogbert
Yep, that's the plan. With these hotels, what's the supply of towels for the beach etc like?
Bruce B
Yep' date=' that's the plan. With these hotels, what's the supply of towels for the beach etc like?[/quote'] The place we stayed there was a place on the premises where you checked out the towels and could exchange them everyday. You could hold on to them the whole time if you wanted but make sure and return them or you'll be charged. So I would hold on to the towels overnight, put them down first thing in the morning, then once youre in place exchange for fresh ones. dogbert
Gotcha. Keep the advice coming Our friends want us to go on some sort of 'club cruise' where you pay up front & get taken around a bunch of clubs. Worth doing?
Mark E
Joel, what about frozen drinks? They have ice in them, so are they just as dangerous? Yep, they are. If you don't know where the ice is from, assume it's tap. And if it's tap, stay the hell away, unless you have some yen for dysentry

I guess it depends on which clubs are included. We tried to get into Senor Frogs and gave up because the wait was too long. If these cruises are to decent clubs and let you bypass the long lines, its definitely worth it.

Man, I'm gonna have to teach my wife to do shots of tequila before the trip, then! Carlos.
Bruce B
Heres a link to my last trip to Cancun. Had to make it a link because the mods might not be happy. Thats me in the middle of course with my wife on one side and her friend on the other. http://us.f3.yahoofs.com/users/41a7555fz425e87e5/1b56/__sr_/46c7.jpg?phoWHoCBPJU8sG8V

Senor Frogs is one name I've heard mentioned by our friends. No idea on exactly what clubs are involved & if that's in the list though. MLivaudais
I stayed at the Blue Bay Getaway last December. It's so hard to describe, in that I had a good time, but I don't think I'd recommend staying there. It's cool if your intentions are to have a true vacation, where you sit around and do nothing but relax around a pool or at the beach. You can have a drink in yer hand 24 hours a day, and there's a place to eat just about the entire time. Also not bad if yer down with lookin at tits all day :tu But if you're going to Mexico to check out the culture, and see different things, I would recommend against an AI (All Inclusive), and definitely stay away from the BBG. You're wasting money anytime you leave the hotel since everything is already paid for at your AI hotel. Plus, you won't see much Mexican culture at the hotel, just vacationing Americans and other foreigners. Just depends on what you wanna do. MLivaudais
Oh yeah, we made it to Senor Frogs. A bit overrated, as it seems like everyone has heard of it and they say it's all good. As long as you get there around 8-9pm, you shouldn't have problems getting in. Good luck after that though

dogbert
Indeed. If it was authentic Mexican culture I was after, it wouldn't be Cancun we're going to. We'll do some Mayan ruins though as that's something I've always wanted to visit.
