Josh
I overheard, at my local mall during lunch today, a conversation snippet from two high school jocks - the prime comment was "the xbox360 is fucking gay". Definitive answer on why the 360 is going to flop Kind of is, though, despite how utterly foolish that statement is. Thing is, right now, PlayStation owns the midnshare, and all non-gay people will be wanting it.

foogledricks
Does that make people who want PS3s patently masculine and brimming with testosterone? Yes. And apparently those 360 folk will be drooling over the PS3 folk. And they'll have a revolutionary baby.

PoisonJam
Kind of is, though, despite how utterly foolish that statement is. Thing is, right now, PlayStation owns the midnshare, and all non-gay people will be wanting it. Absolutely correct. This is what's so amazing about what Sony has done. Most of you know me here and you know my biases and preferences: I don't own a PS2 and I am a big fan of my Xbox. And for the life of me I cannot fathom how you can take two game machines that play virtually the same games other than some exclusives (and some of those exclusives are big, I grant you), and have the Xbox games almost universally look and sound superior with a much more robust online component, sell them at the same price, and still have Sony absolutely cream Microsoft in sales. I mean, what are the numbers now, 40 million to 10 million? Something like that? You can argue about exclusives, Halo versus GTA, Jade Empire versus God of War, whatever, and I can see where you can make a case for Sony slightly outselling Microsoft on those despite the technical differences between the two. Depending on how much people love their GTAs and such I can even see how Sony can outsell MS by a significant amount. But four times the amount of sales? It is mind-boggling to me, and I give all the credit in the world to Sony. They have made their machine synonymous with video games, to the point where people not in the know refer to all consoles as "Playstations", just as people still call copy machines "Xerox machines". And that, to me, is why no matter what MS comes out with, no matter how much of a lead they get on Sony time-wise, no matter what features they put into the 360, no matter how great Xbox Live and Gears of War and Halo 3 and all that stuff is, they can scarcely hope to even pull even with Sony after both next-gen consoles have been out for a while, much less beat them. To the average gamer, playing videogames means playing Playstation, and nothing is going to shake that as long as Sony keeps putting out good product. I don't have a personal stake in either company so it's not about who "wins" to me, but I really do enjoy the Xbox exclusive games and I am very happy with Xbox Live, so I just hope that MS doesn't get sick of getting their brains beat in every generation and pull out of the business altogether once the 360 sunsets. Maybe this is why Microsoft is putting so much stock in releasing first this time, even if it means they have to concede a bit on the technical front to Sony. Sony released a lot earlier than Microsoft last time (something like a whole year?), and they maintained a gigantic market share despite having worse graphics and sound (a biproduct of hitting the market earlier). Maybe us Sony followers will be saying the same complaints as yours above in 4-5 years time. Sony will likely have the better looking games, with better sound and video quality in the long run as 1080p becomes a more household standard in high definition-land, but Microsoft may take the market share by getting the product out there with quality games earlier. One thing is for sure. At PS3 launch, there are likely to be more 360 titles to buy than PS3 in sheer quantity alone. Consumers will look to items like that when determining which to buy. That and the kid demographic mentioned earlier with, "all my friends already have a 360". Those two things alone are very powerful in changing the market share. Remember, despite Sony's dominance now, they were not always number one by this much of a margin. And it only takes one slip up (Nintendo 64 anyone?) to change things dramatically. That lead grew exponentially AFTER the Xbox came out. I think the first-to-market is a big deal, but let's not overstate it. That alone won't get you a lead you can keep forever (see: Dreamcast). Not referring to the Dreamcast of course, but to the whole SegaCD/32X/Saturn mess beforehand.
Tom
That lead grew exponentially AFTER the Xbox came out. I think the first-to-market is a big deal, but let's not overstate it. That alone won't get you a lead you can keep forever (see: Dreamcast). I guess that is where the games come into play. When XBox launched, the games for the PS2 were so much more abundant and IMO of a better quality. Microsoft's big problem for me last time, and throughout it's lifespan of the first generation console, was the games that were coming out for it. With their technological inferiority, Sony shouldn't have grown that lead exponentially, but they did. It had to be something besides that week I spent at Sony HQ under hypnosis. To be fair to the big old evil MS, they were trying to break into a new market for them. That they came out a clear #2 as a previously unknown entity is a strong testiment to how hard they've worked. And with seemingly more developers of good games on board this time, an earlier release date, and their online capabilities they will likely take a bigger piece of the pie. Whether that is the biggest piece or not, remains to be seen. I've still got my money on Infinium Labs, despite their recent problems.
Romier S
I split this new bit of conversation off from the old thread gentleman since it was getting to be an unruly 600+ post thread. We can start fresh here and pick up right where we left off. I've also edited in a link to the original thread at the beginning of this new thread for those that wish to reference it. The old thread is now locked. EDIT: Readded some of the other posts the led up to this discussion for better understanding.
