Great Games, YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED

Recommended Posts

These are a list of titles, ranked 9+ by IGN, that I was interested in greatly when they came out, but was occupied with other games. Now my time is freeing up. So what should I get. What's on your list?!

  1. Mercenaries (Anyone play this. Perhaps it is a more interesting take on GTA - I grew bored with GTA after a while)
  2. Beyond Good & Evil (Have no idea what this game is about, but lots of people here loved it)
  3. Jade Empire (Got some glowing reviews. I'm thinking I can't go wrong with this one)
  4. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (May be able to borrow this for the Gamecube from my brother)
  5. Burnout 3: Takedown (Waiting for 360 version of revenge to hop on this wagon)
  6. Full Spectrum Warrior (There is a sequel coming out. Should I wait?)
  7. Fable (This or Jade Empire, which one? I already played KOTOR, maybe this would be a greater change of pace from another Bioware title)

I'm waiting for a good deal on Jade Empire, but it's definitely on my list. Out of that list, I have had a BLAST (pun somewhat intended) with Mercenaries. I, too, am bored with the whole GTA concept (I haven't bothered with San Andreas yet), but have had so much fun with this game. The pseudo-freeform structure works really well in a battlezone setting, and it's a hell of a lot more fun using huge military gear and weapons versus gunning down a few people in the street with an uzi.

Mainly because I'm a PC gamer, I missed out on a lot of great console games, and from the reviews, these are what I feel bad about missing:

1) God of War

2) Devil May Cry 3

3) Ninja Gaiden

4) Halo 2

5) Tekken 5

6) Resident Evil 4

7) Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

There are quite a few PC games I missed because I only got into gaming early last year, but I have some of them but haven't played them yet, and others I might get for the cultural knowledge:

1) Starcraft

2) Warcraft II

3) Diablo II

4) Warlords Battlecry

5) Rise of Nations

6) Max Payne

7) Serious Sam: The Second Encounter

I recently went on an old-game buying binge and got a few of the old(er) games. I got and played Half-life and the Opposing Force expansion, and I got Max Payne 2, Halo PC, Age of Mythology (not really old but I had missed out on it all this time), Diablo II, Warcraft II + expansion, Starcraft + expansion, MoHAA, Tiberian Sun + expansion.

Well, the three best games on that list (Beyond Good and Evil, Prince of Persia, and Burnout 3) can be had for peanuts now, so I don't think you can go wrong with them.

I found Full Spectrum Warrior to be enjoyable enough, but not on the level of those others, and with no replay value. Neither Fable nor Jade Empire lived up to my expectations. Jade Empire is the better of the two if you have to pick one.

Games that I feel I'm missing include:

Most mario-related titles on GC (except Paper Mario, what a great game)

F-zero

KOTOR II

Hitman: Contracts

GTA:SA (only until the end of today, hopefully)

Ace Combat 5

Since the number of great games I haven't played is vast, I'll narrow my scope to titles that I haven't played, but would like to.

Paper Mario (N64) -- I adored last year's follow-up on the GameCube, but I never got around to playin the original. I have toyed with the idea of finding a used copy and bringing out the ol' N64, but with Revolution supporting game downloads from all of Nintendo's past systems, I think I may wait and see if this is one of the games offered.

Sonic CD (Sega CD) -- I never owned a Genesis and I certainly never owned the Sega CD add-on. And since this title wasn't included in the Sonic Mega Collection, I have yet to play it. However, that will soon be rectified with the new Sonic collection due in stores soon. I can't wait to see what all the fuss is about.

Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake -- I developed a new-found appreication for this series after playing through the remarkable Snake Eater earlier this year, and have since played all the MGS games. However, I haven't played the original 8-bit games. Thankfully, the release of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance will give me the chance to try out these classic games.

Unreal (PC) -- I actually did buy this game, but compatibility issues with my new-at-the-time PC prevented me from even loading the main menus. I eventually gave up and moved on.

Pyschonauts (Xbox) -- I'm a platformer whore, but I haven't been able to pick this up yet due to a lack of funds. I recently purchased a house and most of my money has been getting dumped into that. I hope that I'll be able to find some extra cash sometime soon and pick this up, because it looks absolutely terrific.

Out of those: Beyond G&E and PoP are big time winners at $10-20 a game. Jade Empire and Burnout 3 are excellent games, but $50 is more than the other just as good $10-20 titles. Full SPectrum Warrior and Fable are good, but I'd continue to shelve them in favor of the above. Fable looks to have a 2nd edition published soon anyway with Dragons and all sorts of nifty shit added that was yanked out originally.

Two games on my shelf right now that need some lovin': MGS3 and Katamari Damancy. Just haven't had time, need to make some time soon.

I'll cast a vote for Burnout 3 and Mercenaries, and I'd pick Jade Empire over Fable, though they're both very good.

I'm not a PoP3 fan. Too frustrating to play, if you have limited time (irony abounds here). I found myself wishing I could save anywhere, ala Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Of course, if you're not Chris The Retarded Uber-Wuss, then you'd probably have no problems. The gameplay I did experience was enjoyable.

Another one that many probably passed by was Oddworld Stranger's Wrath - I picked that one up and never played another game until I finished it.

On my list are mainly games that I already own, just haven't played/finished, like:

  • Forza Motorsport
  • KOTOR II
  • HALO 2 on Heroic difficulty
  • Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow
  • DOOM 3
  • The last couple levels of Chaos Theory
  • The last 1/3 of Jade Empire
  • Mercenaries (with another character)

I just bought a new house, and it will be finished at the end of July. I'm kind of on a "break" from games right now, but once I move into my new place and hook up my new kick-ass home theater, I have a feeling I'm gonna have some long gaming sessions.

Too many games, too little time to play them - too old, too broke, too many other responsibilities

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is tops on my list - I've heard too many good things about the multiplayer and despite the fact that I got killed 9 times playing through the first level of the single-player game, I had to keep playing it and get to the end. It was that good.

Runners up on this list are Jade Empire, KOTOR II, Resident Evil 4, and Forza. I may add God of War to this list if I try it and like it.

I'm also getting some weird inkling to get Lego Star Wars if I find it cheap.

As far as a list of games that I own and don't have time to play, it's too huge and I'm just gonna get depressed if I think about it.

PS2: *I've never had a desire to own one

ICO

Gamecube: *My cube broke over a year ago

Resident Evil 4

Metroid Echos (at least I think thats the name)

Xbox:

Jade Empire

PC:

Dunno I think I've played all the ones that I consider great. Maybe World Of Warcraft but they take up too much time and get repetitive. Perhaps thats a MMORPG that would appeal to me? *shrug*

Psychonauts: Can't wait to play this one

Halo 2: Haven't finished it yet. Probably about 80% of the way in. Got sidetracked with online and pissed at brutes.

KOTOR2: Never finished the first one, so...

Shin Megami Tensi: Nocturne

Resident Evil 4

Jade Empire, but no X-Box so I'm waiting on a PC version.

Psychonauts, only a matter of time :tu

SWAT 4, again this'll be mine soon, I can't resist co-op.

ICO, Sly 2, and God of War are the PS2 titles I'd like to play at some point.

On the PS2:

Ico: I own the game, actually, but I've never owned the system. Just couldn't pass it up at $5 when I saw it at one of those CC sales.

God of War: I'd love to see what the fuss is about.

Disgaea: This is as close to a system seller for me as it gets. I'm hoping against hope that it comes to the PSP (seems like a natural fit), but if not then I will eventually pick up a PS2 to play this, assuming I can still find it.

Katamari Damacy: I loves me some quirky games.

On the Dreamcast:

Jet Grind Radio: Look no further than my screenname to see how much I loved JSRF, but would you believe I have purchased three separate copies of JGR at used game stores, only to have each of them fail to boot up? It's like a curse.

Rez: Haven't been able to get this game out of my head since Romier demo'ed it for me, but I'm not holding out much hope of ever owning a copy. Still, since this is a wish list...

On the Xbox:

Burnout 3: I'll probably pick up the PSP version, but one way or another I will play this sucker.

Steel Battalion: Just to see what that controller is all about.

I have Beyond Good & Evil, but only played it 5 minutes, and SC:CT I haven't touched the single player yet. I also recently bought Metroid Prime 2, but only took the plastic off it and have yet to fire it up. Forza & Halo2 occupy 98% of my game time, with RE4 taking up the 2%.

My List is

Disgaea (recently acquired about a month ago)

Final Fantasy Tactics for PS1 (still sealed on my shelf, never gotten a chance to play it somehow, my tactical RPG needs are being met by Shining Force on GBA)

Panzer Dragoon Orta (played about 15 minutes of it since I got my Xbox in January)

Metroid Prime (sold it to help pay for honeymoon/wedding as I was having tendonitis or something anyway, I'd played like 20 minutes of it...got it again with Wavebird bundle clearance at Kmart 4 months back, still sealed on shelf)

I've played most of these, and found most of them to be vastly overrated.

  1. Mercenaries Got bored with it pretty quick. Although, I plan on playing it more in the future, as it may get better.
  2. Beyond Good & EvilI didn't find anything to make me want to continue playing. Plus, the letterboxed presentation pisses me off. It looks like crap on my tv.
  3. Jade Empire Like it a lot & I'm still playing it.
  4. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Beat up ppl, goto next room, maneuver to exit. Rinse, lather, repeat.
  5. Burnout 3: Takedown Good game, but not as good as Burnout 2. Waaaay too many crashes in this game results in making crashes less important. In #2, taking someone down meant a significant advantage. In Burnout #3, it pretty much means nothing.
  6. Full Spectrum Warrior Didn't play it.
  7. Fable This is what Sudeki should have been, and was not what Fable should've been.

Wow, that's like two of my top five games of all time right there. :)

Yeah, well somehow I've never gotten around to playing FFT...I guess cause I had Dynasty Tactics I was working through, and Shining Force on GBA lately. Tactical RPGs suck up a lot of time!

It's funny, because Panzer Dragoon Orta is one of the only Xbox games I wanted for years - but Halo2, Phantom Dust, and SF Anniversary have sucked up most of my Xbox time to date.
