JoeyN
A trend has come up in DVD's which i think makes a good topic. The last few years CD's from certain stores had a extra track or two. Well now it seems Fox and Bestbuy have a deal in place to let the retail chain exclusively carry certain lower level TV sets for a set amount of time before others can carry it. The first will be Tru Calling S2 sometime this summer. Its a show ive come to enjoy after buying the S1 set. Then followed by the release a lot of people have been waiting for Space Above and Beyond The Series in the summer as well. I know there is one more that will be involved also, but i cant find the name. Now it does not bother me as I go to bestbuy all the time and i do shop online as well. However for people that dont have a BB in there area and dont shop online they wont be able to get it right away, expecially if the exclusive is 6-12 months long. I hope this is not a trend that continues to grow capt
Tom
Personally, I don't like it. It goes against creating a competitive marketplace by allowing one retailer to have a product before its competitors. I've seen this happening at Starbucks (recent case of it is Alanis Morrisette's new unplugged Jagged Little Pill being offered there first before hitting music store's shelves. The biggest case I can recall of it happening is two Christmases ago Future Shop/Best Buy had exclusive rights to the Rolling Stones' Forty Licks four DVD box set. Now I'm not a Stones fan by any means, but they have a farily significant following and that DVD was flying off the shelves. Well off FS/BBs shelves. I understand that the competitive market creates these situations. The publisher of these DVDs/CDs is looking for a way to get more money for their product, a retailer is looking to get a leg up on their competition. They offer more money to get early access, and voila, we the consumers lose the freedom of choice. Now big box stores probably don't feel a lot of pain because of this, but what about the small independent retailers. They're already getting squished by companies like Walmart that have such massive distribution chains they can set low prices that would push the little guy's margins into the negative. Now they can't even sell their products on the same day to catch some of the initial rush traffic.
splunk
...They offer more money to get early access, and voila, we the consumers lose the freedom of choice... You still have the choice to buy now or later.
Tom
Yeah, but what if later becomes 6 months later, or even longer. Lots of things I can wait that long for, but not everything. My point is, if a product is available to the market, I should not be forced to go to one particular store if I want that product right now. And like Joey said, what if you live in an area without the store with exclusive rights. Sure, you can buy it online, wait for somebody to put it on ebay, or have a friend buy it for you and ship it. But that's not the point. We're talking about the freedom of choice here. What if somebody told you that Microsoft had XBox360 exclusivity only with EB. You now you have only one option to get your the 360. How fast do you think those EBs are going to sell out? At least with all stores getting a product you have a chance to find a copy of it somewhere. With these exclusive deals, once its sold out, it is gone. dogbert
I have less of a problem with a chain getting a boxset (or game even) exclusively to distribute than I do with actual content being limited to different chains.
