Angry the Clown
I just contributed to the poll on how many games one feels it takes to justify a console purchase and it's got me thinking, and I am frankly none too sure if my PS2 is worth keeping. There's certainly something I like about owning all three consoles as there's such variety open to you if you're fortunate enough to be able to afford all three of the current majors. That said, my PS2 is seeing little action these days, with Silent Hill 3 being the only game I've bought for it all year. My PS2 game collection is rather Humble. Rayman Revolution, GTA Vice City, Wipeout Fusion (yes, I liked it), Metal Gear Solid 2, The Two Towers, Gran Turismo 3, Devil May Cry and Silent Hill 3. It fursrates me seeing expensive purchases like a games console sitting idle on my shelf for so long. Maybe it's just me, maybe I need to exploit some of the titles in the Platinum Range some more and take a look at some of the other PS2 must haves. This is sounding like a repeat of my experience with the original Playstation though which ultimately failed to keep my attention. :? JoeyN
I have 1 game for Ps2. Socom and to me its worth it as i play it a few times a week capt
iainl
Mine's not been touched in weeks, months if you discount the games of Wipeout 3 that could have just as easily been played on the PS1 in the loft, either. But then (1) they don't seem to be worth much second-hand right now, and (2) you just know that the moment you get rid of it something great will come out. Personally, I plan to get Psyvariar when it finally reaches the UK (though its just been put back AGAIN!) and it seems the most likely console to find a decent enough arcade stick to justify Soul Calibur II as well. EnemaEms
Dan, Do you like platformers? If you do, the PS2 has many good ones. Ratchet and Clank can now be had for $20. Jak and Daxter as well. Now the sequels for those will also be out soon and they both look fantastic. Then you have SOCOM, but I am not sure if you have or can take your PS2 on-line. If you can, I reccomend it. SOny has dedicated servers for the game and SOCOM 2 will be out in a couple of months. Gran Turismo 4 will be out soon if you are a fan of that series. GTA 4 will hopefully be better than Vice City. The new WWE: Smackdown game will be released in a month if you like wrestling games. I say you keep it, but that's just me. -Dean-
iainl
Actually, thats a point - I keep meaning to re-buy Jak 'n' Daxter at some point (borrowed it for a while and really liked it). Its definitely worth the ?15 or so it'll cost. I have to say I'm really not liking the look of the sequels, though.
Angry the Clown
I do like Platformers yes. The Platinum titles may just be what I need. I see Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter in the Platinum Range. Kindgom Hearts is in the range too, that's always been one I'd wanted to get (granted, not a platformer). I see Final Fantasy X is there too. Ok, so yes there are a number of Platinum titles, I still want Virtua Fighther 4 Evolution too (though they have the audacity to charge ?30 for it here). I think part of my problem is that right now, none of my consoles can be connected to my TV/Home Theatre at the same time so a console can often sit gathering dust. This will change when I re-construct my room this autumn, so maybe things will be better when I am able to just flick the power button on each console and play immediately, instead of having to take a console off the shelf, plug it into the mains, then the tv, then the HT Processor. I can't say I can buy any of these titles soon, but just knowing there are actually pleanty of titles I should own is enough to have me keep it. There, that must be the shortest time spent pondering over keeping a console ever. Feel free to keep game recommendations coming, as I'll make a list. EnemaEms
Dan, Glad I could help. Oh, if you like the Tony Hawk games, 3 and 4 can both be had for $20 and sometimes $10. Both are the best in the series. -Dean-
Angry the Clown
Tony Hawks 4 I have on the X-box. Never took to number 3 much. 2 remains my favourite and that I have on the Dreamcast. Dan
EnemaEms
Well then, I might as well as count that last post as a waste of bandwidth. -Dean-
iainl
Aaah, glad to see I'm not the only one who regards the Dreamcast incarnation of 2 as the pinnacle of the series. After that it disappeared up the complexity path too far, and became about trying to add even more difficult things for those that walked the previous game to do. Angry the Clown
I'm awful at Pro Skater 4. Needs good patient sessions from me. I like how I can fill the soundtrack with Led Zeppelin instead of the game's soundtrack on the X-box. That helps me play a little bit better. Josh
Personally, I think you're high if you have a PS2, you're considering getting rid of it, and you haven't played ICO. High.
Angry the Clown
Mmm, that is on the list. Daniel - high as a kite
adamsappel
If you needed money for an operation or something, sell. If you're just bored with it at the moment, keep. There's always a good game you've missed (you haven't played ICO yet and you're considering selling?). I've lately started getting into PS1 titles I'd never tried. I think if you polled the membership about gaming regrets, selling a console ranks number one.
Angry the Clown
I dunno. I don't miss my Atari Jaguar much. :green: Daniel
Ricky G
I sold the PS2 once, then rebought it. Never making that mistake again.
Angry the Clown
Ok, so colour me convinced. This is my list so far of games I really aught own on the PS2 and no excuses. Rez I played on the Dreamcast, and loved (an overlooked gem to be sure). Never actually owned it though! Final Fantasy X (Platinum) Ico Jak & Daxter (Platinum) Kingdom Hearts (Platinum) Ratchet & Clank (Platinum) Rez Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution Virtua Tennis 2 Most of the above are thankfully pretty cheap (Platinum obviously) and Rez is about ?20 itself. I'll be sure to breathe some new life into the PS2 soon enough in which case. SOCOM I am curious about, and may ultimately get that (or more likely its sequel) when I am on broadband and there are more PS2 games to make use of the network adapter. iainl
As I briefly mentioned on the TV upgrade thread, if its sitting around bored for a long while, you may wish to sell it after all, and pick up one of the shiny silver prog scan DVD compatible, DVD-R compatible, quiet fan running ones out soon. However, you can definitely add Frequency to that list as well; its another title that can be found really cheap on a lucky day and is decidedly addictive at times. Scar
I went through your same dilemna and went ahead and traded in my PS2 for a second Xbox. I haven't regretted my decision one bit. I can now enjoy the goodness of mini Halo parties. The PS2 was the least played of all my consoles. I played my Dreamcast more than I played the PS2. So, instead of having an expensive piece of hardware gathering dust, I now have an equally expensive piece of hardware actually being used! :green:
Woo Jae Park
Well, Dan, I don't have the Xbox, but I can safely say that you shouldn't sell a console only to regret it. If you are certain PS2 is not for you (hey! I rhymed ) then by all means go ahead. Personally, I would keep the console and box it away along with the games to a safeplace. Angry the Clown
As I briefly mentioned on the TV upgrade thread, if its sitting around bored for a long while, you may wish to sell it after all, and pick up one of the shiny silver prog scan DVD compatible, DVD-R compatible, quiet fan running ones out soon. I'm far too lazy to do that. In addition, my PS2 is only used for gaming, and never it's DVD capabilities. It's nice that the new model will be a bit quieter mind you. As for Frequency, top recommendation. I forgot all about that! Well, Dan, I don't have the Xbox, but I can safely say that you shouldn't sell a console only to regret it. If you are certain PS2 is not for you (hey! I rhymed ) then by all means go ahead. Personally, I would keep the console and box it away along with the games to a safeplace. It's kind of boxed away right now as I said, which I think is a big reason why it's seen so much play. Until I re design my room I've got no space to sit every console on the shelf. Cube is tiny so can sit almost anywhere (sits on top of my DVD player); x-box demands its own shelf. Poor PS2 had to be put in a box to one side and taken out whenever I go to play it. It's an arduous task, which I am sure contributed to my brief dilemma in regard to keeping it. Again I greatly appreciate everyone's advice. There will be a number to call should anyone wish to now donate money to the cause of my being able to actually buy some of these aforementioned games. Darius
I would recommend keeping it. I'm now on my third PS2. I got my first one right at release and then sold it the following march becaues there weren't any games that I wanted for it really(very similar to xbox the first year). I was fine with the decision until Gran turismo 3 came out then I had to buy another one. About a year later I traded int he PS2 for the xbox so I could take advantage of my 46" WS mits. Then I bought my third PS2 about 6 months later. I've decided now that I'm not getting rid of it until PS3 comes out. So save yourself the hastle of rebuying it and just keep it. I only have two games I play on it regurly (GT3 and F355 Challenge) But I'm looking forward to GT4.
Angry the Clown
Mmm, advice well taken, Darius. I'm wondering though if there are many who have purchased, sold, and re-purchased PS2s like yourself......and just how much such a practice has contributed to the console's global sales numbers. :green: Daniel
Calvin
Since I found out that you'll be able to play SOCOM II with all of us - I would say keep the darn thing. My PS2 play runs hot & cold - but I love having the option.
Angry the Clown
My PS2 lives! I finally bought a game for it yesterday, Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. I can finally scratch that off of the list. The VF series remains my favourite fighting series, so this is naturally a joy to own. Got it on sale, and to my utter delight it has a 60hz mode so I am playing it at full speed. Kudos to the Sega folks for that one!
