adamsappel
I've been trying to find a cheaper copy of Burnout 2 for a while, but today I saw the original Burnout for $14.99 at KB Toys and I broke down and bought it (though it's still unopened). Is #2 that much of an improvement that I should get it instead? Or will the original satisfy my arcade racer needs? Keep in mind I'm more interested in racing than crashing. Sam P
I really enjoy the Burnout series. The 2nd one, like most sequels, is simply an improved version of the first. It's an evolution, rather than a revolution. You aren't missing much, especially not at this price point. And anyway, you're into the racing. Not the crashing (Burnout 2 comes with a full-on crash mode). The best part about Burnout, as far as I'm concerned, is the boost meter. You fill it by doing dangerous things (driving on the wrong side of the road, powersliding, weaving through traffic) and when it's full you get a spike in acceleration. If you manage to do nutty things while you're on "burnout" you can score another one. Too sweet. It's this precarious balance between being reckless but driving clean that makes it so addictive. It's not unlike the Kudos point scoring system in PGR. Open it up. You'll love it.
Camp
Burnout 2 is a damn good time. Fantastic graphics and great crash 'em up fun. I'm not sure if a 3rd is in the works but I think a few things need to be added/altered to make this a true AAA title. First of all, it needs a multiplayer version. Imagine a "free drive" mode like Midtown Madness with Burnout's crash system. How much fun would that be? The over the top physics are fun but disappointing at times. Windows completely break out even on the smallest hit. Crash effects are inconsistent from crash to crash. I get the impression there isn't really a physics engine running the crashes but a dramaticly skewed randomizer (if that's not an oxymoron I don't know what is ). Finally, everything in the game should be destructable. I should be able to ram buildings, pedistrians, side rails, etc.
Angel P
I played the 1st one but not thoroughly so all I can say is that it's a fun game. But I would imagine that the 2nd one not only improves on graphics but there are more/longer tracks. If you must have a "new" game then open it. Otherwise I'd try and find a used copy of Burnout 2. Sam P
I also wanted to add the physics are real slack. PGR's physics are slack, but still not as slack as Burnout's. But if arcade racing floats your boat... 8)

I love arcade racers, but I need something to keep it feeling like I'm driving. If they added an option for PGR-like physics, or just something more realistic, I'd be all over it. AnthonyVolpe
Crash mode is the whole reason I bought Burnout 2. It's just so outrageous and ridiculous that it was worth the price of the game at full price. But hey, to each his own.

Truth be told, I will probably buy B2 when the price drops to ~$15-20 purely because of the crashes. They are really well done, and fun when you're in one of those "hehe, destruction" states of mind...but it wasn't enough to get my $50. adamsappel
Thanks for the replies, guys. Which version has the best multi-player mode? I want to bring a racing game when I go on vacation next month and finally have some people to play against. This is a tough game to find used (or new, for that matter). There's a few copies at Blockbuster, but they're only $5 off at $34.99 (they have the new price as $49.99).
Angel P
This game never cost $50. It was released at the basement bargain price of $40.

Whooter
The Xbox version has been forever $49.99 in my area...

iainl
For what its worth, the PS2 version came out here in the UK on Platinum (our Greatest Hits equivalent), so hopefully we'll see some movement on the price of the other versions as well. JTello
-I love the game, but I'd also really like them to improve the areas that iCamp mentioned. In addition I'd like to see a slider implimented so we can adjust the speed of the crashes to our liking. I'd perfer the crashes to be sped up a bit as the slow-mo can drag a bit. Also the camera work needs tweaking, a little too often I'm stuck watching at a car sliding away from the accident scene and away from harm as I hear all sorts of crashing in the background. (I have Burnout2 for Xbox, and I'm not going to be bullied from posting in the Gamecube thread )
iainl
Have they changed the crash reply setup, then? I love sweeping the camera round with the analogue stick on the first game so that you follow in the car at first, whip over the top of it as the impact happens, and then around to look back at the mess you've made. fishepa
I bought burnout 2 for the xbox for $50, I wish I hadn't payed $50. It's a good game but not worth $50, or $40 IMO.
adamsappel
I bought Burnout 2 at EB Games today (I took back the original). Having a lot of fun with it, though it's been a little easy thus far. Still, I bought it for multiplayer mayhem, and it seems it will fit that bill quite nicely.
