Help me Decide - Should I Keep my XBOX?

First off, I'm not one for keeping / collecting old consoles with the exception of my N64 which is currently hooked up to the tv in my den and gets a lot of use from my daughter and her friends. That said, I'm trying to decide whether or not I really want to keep my original Xbox since I honestly don't see myself using the older hardware when I'm having so much fun with my 360 and the new releases.

Sounds like I've answered my own question but my hesitation is due to some games that I haven't either finished or played yet (i.e.: Steel Battalion, Beyond G & E, Riddick, Greg Hastings Paintball, etc.) and are either lacking backwards compatibility or there are issues with titles that have been emulated for BC (i.e.: Ninja Gaiden Black).

A friend of mine wants to buy an original Xbox for his son this week, so I'm tempted to give him a great deal on everything and not look back.

Do you guys really visit old consoles/games that often to justify keeping them around?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I have had a lot of consoles, going all the way back to RadioShack's version of Pong.

I have gotten rid of all of them as I acquire newer gens to take their place, mostly via the same manner as your opportunity--the chance to do something nice for someone who didn't even have the older gen.

But, good deeds aside, I have regretted the move every single time. Every. Single. Time. Most recently we gave our friends the N64, but now I regret not having DK:64 (a game we loved) anymore.

Choose carefully. It's a tough call, especially with the incomplete and imperfect B/C of the Xbox 360.

Carlos.

Put me in the "No" category as I am one to collect, and keep my consoles and games. Carlucci hit the nail on the head when he said that any time I've gotten rid of a console I've regretted it. Unless it was a portable that I planned to buy again at a later date like the DS (or the PSP for that matter).

The real question you want to ask yourself here is "Are there still games I want to play on the Xbox?" If so, the answer to your question is easy. Backwards compatability on the 360 is something else to consider, but at the moment I don't think it's at the level where you can dependably play some of those games you mentioned (if at all).

It's doubtful you'll get much for it (unless you give it to someone who really wants one and can't afford it), so you might want to consider that.

Personally, I don't care to hang on to old systems once their usefulness is spent. I've had (and gotten rid of): Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Sega Nomad, PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast, and most recently, the PS2. Never regretted moving on. Except for the PS2, I've given them to friends and family. (I traded my PS2 in for store credit at Rhino Video Games along with some other things.)

Once in a while, a feeling of nostalgia crops up, but there are only so many hours in a day, and I'm not going to take time away from other things to play old games. I don't have nearly as much time as others on this board seem to have.

I still have my Xbox, because I want to finish HalfLife 2 without starting over, and some of my friends only have an Xbox and some of the Live compatible games that aren't Backwards Compatible. But I predict that by summer of 06, I'll have no reason to keep it.

I'd keep it if I were you. In a few years later when you're upset about selling it, reacquiring your old library will probably cost more than any pittance you can get for it right now. Rebuying certain Saturn games was very expensive when I decided I wanted to play them again, and I've always regretted trading in my mint/complete SNES rpgs.

You need to ask youreslf what the realistic likelihood you'll want to play the Xbox again in the future is. You're the only one that can answer that question and once you do, let that be your guide.

Some people play their old games alot (or keep them as collectibles). Me, I don't ever touch my consoles/games from previous generations. In a few cases, I've sold them to upgrade (sold my 3DO to fund my PS1) and in most cases, they are just in a closet somewhere collecting dust (e.g. PS1, N64, Dreamcast, SNES, GBA, GBA SP, etc.).

I've always been a bit of hoarder when it comes to games, but I regularly go back & play the "old games" I have, particularly on the PSX & DC. But saying that, I've been clearing out my machines/games - I've sold a NES, Saturn & N64 in the past week or two, and I'm likely to go trade in my second Xbox tonight. Of them, it's really only the Saturn I'll miss, and I sold it knowing I'll likely replace it down the line. That'll leave me with a PSX, a DC, a GC & a modded Xbox. There's still plenty to play on the Xbox for me.

I'd like to be rid of mine in all honesty. I hate the bloody design of the thing, always have........however the Xbox simply has one too many gems exclusive to its games catalogue be it Panzer Dragoon Orta, Outrun 2, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and so on, and frankly I am a little cynical of the 360s ability to perform well in emulating its predecessor's back catalogue at the moment.

The fact mine is modified of course aides in my wanting to hold onto it, and I say that as someone who's never bothered using it as a media centre and simply enjoying the fact I can store and run games off of a larger hard disc.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I told my friend that I decided to keep my Xbox and that he should go purchase an xbox for his son but that I'll give him a bunch of stuff for free. I'm going to give him 2 of my 4 controllers, the dvd playback kit, as well as the games I no longer play.

Oh, and I do promise to play B G&E and finish Riddick before I finally get rid of my xbox.

I fixed your post for you, Wetwork ;)

Not to get off topic, but I guess it's ok since I started the thread...

Ok, I'll admit ignorance, as I've never kept informed regarding the mod scene. What exactly can I do with a modded xbox? Approximately how much does it cost to mod? ? and are all mods detectable by MS - can you still get your xbox live account closed due to MS's ability to identify modded xboxs?

A modded xbox lets you do two main things - run unsigned code & change the harddrive. Running unsigned code lets you run emulators for all the major systems upto PSX/N64, as well as the daddy - XBox Media Centre, the media player out there. Changing thea harddrive lets you copy your games & run them from the HD instead of the disc - much faster, much more flexible. You cannot play these copies on XBL, note.

Personally, I love my modded machine for the media centre.

..and I for the emulators. It was the main reason for me getting a modded system. The ability to have the entire Genesis, SNES, NES, Atari library, and a slew of arcade titles at my fingertips without having to have those systems hooked up saves me a bunch of shelf space. It's also convenient, and lets me play a ton of my old school favorites with little hassle. Add in the fact that alot of the emulators let you play classics at 1080i/720p and it's the best money I've spent on a console.

If you take a modded Xbox online with the chip active, that Xbox will be banned from Live, not you or your gamertag.

I've modded a few of the Xbox's for users on the forum before and the chip+the install is around $50. At that point the box is modded and if you've ever changed the HDD in a PC, you can change the HDD in an Xbox :)
