LCVG

Your online personality and the person that is you.

Something funny happened a little earlier today. I got an AIM from one of our members here, and a friend (Merlot) that basically said the following :

"Man you have two sides - 1 is the politically correct, love everyone side, and the other is the foul mouth f*&$er on Live :)"

No doubt commenting on some of the things I noted in the Live Arcade thread. I got a good chuckle out of that because for the most part, it's hard for me to really dislike anyone. People have thier eccentricities of course, but hate is generally a strong word I reserve for very few. However, the reality is that I'm not a fan of political correctness in general, and I can be downright foul mouthed on Live because I'm in a social setting with folks I consider friends. Those of you that have met me in person know I'm the consumate goofball afterall. (and restraunt staff fear me;))

Being one of the folks that runs this forum though requires me to consider things from a different angle than my own. I always want LCVG to be a comfortable place for people to talk games, and to carry on with a good atmosphere. That does require different viewpoints to be taken into account when moderating, or dealing with situations that may arise. Though, in the middle of a debate I'm going to give you 100% Romier whether you like it or not.;)

With that said, Mike's comments really got me to wondering, does your online personality differ greatly from your personality on the forum? Or even in every day life? Does the anonymity of online gaming, or even just general online interaction change the way you would normally react to certain things/situations? It's an interesting question to me because in general I try to remain as open minded as possible when I'm dealing with folks on the forum, yet I realize that sometimes I can more closed minded than I should be in my every day dealings with people if thier opinions are in direct contravention to my own. What are your thoughts? How does your online personality match up to your everyday life?

I'm more polite unless I'm drinking or I'm only gaming with my close friends. If it's myself and friends gaming against the masses in Halo 2 and they start calling me a nigga and generally talking inappropriate smack, I fire the same back. Sometimes, though, if I'm drunk I'll smack talk a bit, but within reason. If it's LCVGers I don't know real well, I'm much more subdued.

I'm the same mealy-mouthed, milquetoast, peace-making wanker online as I am in person. Seriously--I don't go in for trash-talking and open conflict over the mike makes me very uncomfortable. A little good-natured ribbing I can live with and even join in to a small extent but I would have to feel very comfortable with the crowd to engage in it personally (sadly for you fuckers, I feel comfortable with you). But no, I don't really change a whit whether on an internet board, chatting online, or boring people in person.

In another online forum my forum "tag" is "Office Jester." If I can find something funny to write I'll do it. On Live I'm relatively tame, but that's mostly because I typically have my wife somewhere nearby and my 2 1/2 year old daughter asleep upstairs. Therefore, about the worst you'll get out of me verbally was my "sack" epithet last night.

I'm pretty different. I'm a freaking chameleon. Since I write for a living, I have a distinct written voice from that of my spoken voice. With good friends, I can be pretty caustic and sarcastic.

I so rarely get on Live that I'm usually just trying to keep you guys from hating me.
