JoeyN
In todays NY daily news they had the top 10 things you need to buy in 2006. They mention that in January Tivo will be releasing a HD Tivo with dual tuners, and cable card support. We can only hope :tu
exile
Joey, The prototype was shown just last CES. CES is the first weekend in January so if the rumor is true you will see it then. They should show the Mpeg4 Directv version at CES for sure. My only issues with the Tivo version are: 1. Cost. I will assume it will be expensive($1k). Regardless it will be hard to sell these when you can rent one for $4 a month from most cable companies. If it's cheap then that's another story. I doubt it though as most HD DVR's are expensive. 2. cable card support. Cable cards are so frickin flaky that I'd be worried about these. Plus you gotta pay a little extra per month per cable card. 2 of these + the Tivo fee which is probably $6-$10 a month is rough. We shall see though. I'm intrigued but the Tivo software isn't worth THAT much to me.
JoeyN
I knew about the prototype i just havent heard about it coming out so soon. If they were coming out at $1000 no one would buy one. It would be business suicide.
exile
The other HD DVR's being sold right now are being sold at 1k. This is why I speculated at that price.

The Daisy
DirecTV is expected to announce their new HD MPEG-4 DVR for a Feb. launch at a cost of $299 It sure as heck better be free for those of us that just got them. exile
The big difference of course will be that you lose Tivo.
kelley
It sure as heck better be free for those of us that just got them. Glen It will be. I'm thinking of getting a HR10-250 for my new HDTV, just not sure if I want to spend the $400 on it right now.
The Daisy
I just bought our HR10-250 about 4 months ago and I could never go back. Being able to watch almost all of the HDTV programming on DirecTV whenever I want is absolutely terrific. Glen
kelley
Can you tell a difference between your OTA HD and the HD that you get from DirecTV? If you go onto any of the satellite forums you hear people complaining of DirecTV's HD being HD-Lite because they broadcast at 1280x1080. The Daisy
I've never really noticed any differences between the two, but of course I'm not scanning the screen looking for artifacts, etc. I've been very happy with the DirecTV HDTV as well as my OTA HDTV. exile
Unless you have a 1080I resolution set, you won't notice the difference. My friend has a plasma and we can't tell the difference but again his plasma only can do 1366x768. Since my set can do 1080I, I'd like to try this in the future if I move back to Directv. I don't have my OTA up and running(nor a converter box) so I can't compare on my set
JoeyN
Well Folks HD Tivo is here. In a letter sent out to Tivo subscribers they gave us the option of buying one. However for $799 Ill be holding out for a along while.
dogbert
$800 is a heck of a lot of cash.
JoeyN
$800 is a heck of a lot of cash. Im a huge Tivo fan however they must be insane. Expecially when you can get a HD DVR from the cable company and pay less a month then the tivo service. Which i think I may be switching to in the very near future
dogbert
Im a huge Tivo fan however they must be insane. Oh same here. It's a great looking box feature wise, but the price is just too high at that initial sticker price for most people to justify it. Now the HD-DVRs from the likes of Comcast are of course heavily subsidised, but that's irrelevant to consumers - $800 just doesn't make sense. Bah. JoeyN
Also its hard enough to get a cable card here. They have to come to your house or they wont give you one. Try asking for two, or for phil and I four. LOL
kelley
Its hard enough to get a cable card that works. they are POS. Hopefully 2.0 will fix their problems. I really want a TiVo HD, but no way in hell am I going to shell out $800 for a Gen1 product. Cox is supposed to have TiVo HD-DVRs for subs sometime in 2007. Brandon H
I'm still tempted, if only because I have the option of transferring my lifetime subscription from my 40-hour TiVo Series 1 box to the Series 3. Our local Time Warner Cable franchise uses the crappy SARA software for their Scientific Atlanta HD-DVRs, which really makes me covet the TiVo. General Zot
Anyone have an update on the D*TV mpeg-4 HD-DVR boxes? Are they shipping, any good, prices?
exile
They are offering them @ $299 each. At Cedia Directv said that they don't plan to offer anymore HD channels except locals until late 07. The 2 room DVR that Dish already has won't be available until 08. Parrish
I love Tivo, but they are just crazy. If I want to buy a series 3 and transfer my lifetime subscription to it, it is $1000! What exactly about this hardware is so expensive to produce, or is Tivo just trying to stay afloat solely on the love of early adopters? Chris The Rock
Anyone have an update on the D*TV mpeg-4 HD-DVR boxes? Are they shipping, any good, prices? I've ordered two of them. I ordered one from BestBuy.com on 9/4 when they were $399, and used a 10% off coupon. Item was backordered. Later, called D* and wanted to order a second one, learned that the price had fallen to $299. I talked to The Worst CSR In The History Of The World** and placed my order. Immediately I called Customer Retention and grumbled about the bad CSR, and tried to get a better deal. I tentatively agreed to buying two of them, one @ 299, and the other for free, with a swap of my HR10-250. The nice gal with customer retention couldn't place the order, and agreed to call me back. (actually, it would cost $99, but they would give me a $99 credit on my bill). Just after hanging up, I got an email saying my order from Best Buy.com had shipped. Only they had dropped the price to $299, but still applied a $40 discount (the original 10%), so my cost was only $259. I called my wife, and we agreed we didn't want to give up our HR10-250, so I called Retention back and told them that I didn't want to do the swap. Got a really cool dude who helped me order a second one. He gave me a decent deal: The box was still $299, but he credited me $99, and gave me some program credits - $10 off my base package for 12 months, free HD package for 4 months, free Showtime for 6 months, and $10 off HBO for six months (making it $2 per month). I read oodles of threads at DBStalk.com and it sounds like long-time customers got even better deals, but I'm satisfied with what I got. I get my HR-20 from BestBuy tomorrow (9/20) and the one from DirecTV comes 10/3. It sucks that they have to send a truck out just to deliver the box (I already have the 5-LNB dish and the wiring I need), but everyone at D* told me that's the only way they can do it. General Zot
Hey, thanks Chris. We have an HD10-250 now, so please let us (me) know how the new box performs. I'm always wary of getting the "first" new box produced by any company, but if it fixes the 10-250 problems I'd probably switch (like the crazy slow menu, tivo "please wait" screen for 5 mins, sound dropouts, etc.) But if it gets ch.4 HD over the satellite (Broncos baby!), that's a hell of a nice incentive. Your input would be exceptionally valuable, as you are just up the road from us.

The $299 deal from D* comes with installation and hookup of the 5LNB dish if you don't have it. If you dare, head over to http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=112 to read about the HR20. An on a different note, the HR10-250 has been updated by D*. http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=647871 -- I'll need to get my phone line connected to download it.
